September 7 & 8:  9th Annual Domestic Violence Symposium: The Bigger Picture

“Spend two days with us and your colleagues as we explore aspects that factor into the bigger picture of gender-based violence and response.  We will hear from The Full Frame Initiative, Futures Without Violence and others on topics including well-being, immigration, sexual coercion and violence, prevention, athletics, procedural justice, bias and culture, trial advocacy and more, highlighting that the whole is indeed greater than the sum of its parts.
In 2017 we will focus on “the Bigger Picture” of gender-based violence featuring:

  • The work of the Full Frame Initiative, an organization that works with systems to break cycles of poverty, violence, trauma and oppression by increasing access to wellbeing, especially for the marginalized;

Washington State Bar Foundation seeking law student to serve on its Board of Trustees

The Washington State Bar Foundation has an opening on its Board of Trustees for a law student, for a term beginning October, 2017.  The Washington State Bar Foundation is the fundraising arm of the Washington State Bar Association. Its mission is to provide financial support for WSBA programs that promote diversity within the legal profession and enhance the public’s access to and understanding of the justice system. Bar Foundation funding helps to power vital programs like the WSBA Moderate Means Project, Call To Duty, and more.

This term will begin October 1st, and will last for the duration of the student’s time in law school. Trustees are stewards of the Bar Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and are actively involved in all aspects of donor development. “Fighting Human Trafficking — A Local Response to a Global Problem” ILO and the U.S. State Department estimate that there are at least 20.9 million adults and children who are victims of forced labor, bonded labor, and commercial sexual servitude at any given time. No state or country is free from human trafficking, including Washington. The commercial sexual exploitation of women, girls and boys throughout WA is extensive.  There are also known cases of labor trafficking in WA. Mr. Talebi will discuss key efforts in Washington State to fight international and domestic human trafficking.

Farshad Talebi leads the newly created Human Trafficking and Child Exploitation Unit in the Washington State Attorney General’s Office, which is a multidisciplinary team dedicated to prosecuting and preventing sex and labor trafficking through law enforcement and policy development. His experience includes drafting human trafficking legislation and legislative reports and developing policy work through the coordination of Washington State anti-trafficking efforts between law enforcement, prosecutors, state and federal agencies, and community based organization. He serves as the Convening Chair of the Commercially Sexually Exploited Children (CSEC) Statewide Coordinating Committee, as Chair of the Coordination Committee, Washington State Task Force Against the Trafficking of Persons, and as AGO Representative to the Washington Advisory Committee on Trafficking (WashACT).

Each spring, UWCHR organizes an event to celebrate human rights in our community. This year, we hope that you can join us to honor Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson. We will present the AG with the inaugural University of Washington Center for Human Rights Justice Award for his contributions to the protection of human rights. In February, a lawsuit by Ferguson’s office successfully blocked the Trump administration’s executive order banning travel to the U.S. by Syrian refugees and citizens from seven majority-Muslim countries. Attorney General Ferguson will deliver a speech on “Challenging Injustice Through the Courts.”

The Migration Portfolio forms part of the Economic Empowerment Section of the Policy Division at UN Women Headquarters in New York. In 2016, the Migration Team’s work-streams have included: Coordinating UN Women’s chairing of the Global Migration Group (GMG) in 2016; Managing the implementation of UN Women’s EU-funded project on “Promoting and Protecting Women Migrant Workers’ Labour and Human Rights: Engaging with International and National Human Rights Mechanisms to enhance Accountability” due to be finalised in early 2017; Supporting the UN system, requesting Member States and other relevant entities to develop gender-responsive approaches to migration that promote gender equality and the empowerment of migrant women and girls. Nov. 30: SEIU Fight for $15 one-year legal fellowship

The Legal Department of the Service Employees International Union will have an opening for a law fellow in Washington, D.C., starting in September 2017. The SEIU Law Fellowship Program was established to introduce recent law graduates to a broad range of legal work within an international union, and offers an excellent opportunity for new lawyers to work with experienced union-side lawyers on a variety of cutting-edge issues related to the advancement of workers’ interests.

The 2017 Fight for $15 Law Fellow will provide legal support for SEIU’s campaign in support of the Fight for $15 movement. The Fellow will also have the opportunity to be involved in many areas of the legal department’s work. While each fellowship experience varies according to the work of the department, the Fellow can expect to be involved in at least some of the following types of work: litigation to enforce the labor and employment rights of union members; handling matters before the National Labor Relations Board; drafting amicus briefs in support of workers’ rights issues before the NLRB and appellate courts; advice and assistance to staff organizers on organizing campaigns; involvement in policy and legislative initiatives; and participation in SEIU’s political program. Job Description Children’s Law Center invites applications for summer 2017 law clerk internships to begin Tuesday, May 30, 2017. Law clerks have a wide variety of responsibilities including conducting client intakes, completing court runs, researching and writing about legal issues, interviewing clients and witnesses, locating resources for clients, attending court hearings, and accompanying attorneys on home and school visits.

The Northwest Justice Project Farmworker Unit seeks summer interns to assist experienced attorneys in serving migrant farm workers through farm labor camp outreach, community education and legal work. Law student outreach is an essential component in helping workers in their efforts to enforce their labor rights and obtain access to needed services.

Law students will work with attorneys on ongoing cases and projects, including farmworker sexual harassment cases and community education, pesticide safety, wage theft, and advocacy related to the H-2A temporary visa program for farmworkers. Washington AGO (Olympia) Seeks Assistant Attorney General – Revenue Division, Due 7/31

The Revenue Unit has an opening for a lawyer who enjoys working in a collegial and supportive environment.  Revenue AAGs primarily handle all aspects of excise and property tax refund claims and provide advice to the Department of Revenue.  Revenue AAGs generally practice before the Board of Tax Appeals (BTA) and the Thurston County Superior Court, and in the federal courts in tax disputes involving Indian law and other federal issues.  Practice in the Revenue Unit includes engaging in written discovery and taking depositions, a considerable amount of legal research and writing, arguing motions and handling hearings before the BTA, and motions practice in the Thurston County Superior Court.  Revenue AAGs also regularly handle appeals in the Washington Court of Appeals and the Washington Supreme Court, and occasionally work on tax cases that reach the United States Supreme Court.  Revenue cases often involve challenging and complex statutory and constitutional issues, and multi-million dollar refund claims.  And since virtually all business activity in Washington is taxed, Revenue AAGs get to learn about all sorts of different businesses.

Center for Community Solutions Seeking Staff Attorney for Domestic Violence Program, Due 8/3

Since 1969, Center for Community Solutions (CCS) has been creating safe and healthy communities with a core emphasis on the prevention and intervention of sexual assault and relationship violence. Our mission is to end relationship and sexual violence by being a catalyst for caring communities and social justice.

The staff attorney will provide legal assistance to victims of domestic violence served by the East Domestic Violence Services (DVS) program.  Supervision for the position is provided by the Litigation Manager.  The position is stationed twenty hours per week at the El Cajon Courthouse to staff CCS’ Domestic Violence Restraining Order (DVRO) Clinic.  The remaining twenty hours per week are devoted to providing additional legal services to clients, providing education for the DVS advocacy staff, and conducting training and outreach in the community.

The Director is responsible for coordinating the College’s work with the state Legislature, Governor’s Office, the Office of Financial Management and the Washington Student Achievement Council.  Monitor and analyze state and federal legislation or proposals having impact on the College, and provide information on such to the College community.  Work with the President and senior staff to develop positions on proposed state and federal legislation.  Represent the College and its positions to the Legislature and others.  Provide information to government officials as necessary.  Work with local government, business and civic organizations to provide information about the College and develop positive relationships and partnerships.

Amnesty International Seeking Fall 2015 Legal Research Intern, Due 8/7

The Research Unit at Amnesty International USA is seeking legal interns with a strong background and interest in human rights to work on several US-based research projects during the fall semester of 2015.  Interns will work on research projects which are being developed as part of AIUSA’s current  campaigns on such issues as police accountability, torture, sexual reproductive rights and gun violence as well as the organization’s ongoing work on other issues such as immigration, national security and crimianl justice.
