Our law clerk program has two distinct components:

The Constitution Project Seeks Criminal Justice Staff Attorney, Due 1/10

The Constitution Project (TCP), a nonprofit public policy organization based in Washington, D.C., seeks a Staff Attorney to work on a criminal justice research and writing project. The position is for one year.

The Staff Attorney will work with TCP staff, outside experts and practitioners, and former policymakers to conduct extensive research and analysis of specific death penalty-related laws and processes, as well as critical components of the broader criminal justice system. Fellows also explore the root causes of hunger and poverty in a peer learning community. Peggy Browning Fund Seeks 2016 Summer Fellows, Due 1/15

Peggy Browning FundThe mission of the Peggy Browning Fund (PBF) is to educate law students about the rights and needs of workers.  Since our first Summer Fellowship Program in 1998, the prestige of a Peggy Browning Fellowship has become widely recognized.

Students have been consistently enthusiastic about the invaluable experience they gained.  Many law firms, labor unions, and nonprofit organizations serving workers  have reported that, because of our reputation and their experience with our Fellows, they consider a Peggy Browning Fellowship as an especially important credential.

During 2016, we expect to offer approximately 70 funded ten-week Summer Fellowships.    In addition, we will once again offer a funded part-time School-Year Fellowship (at the Chicago Newspaper Guild).

Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund Seeking 2016 Summer Legal Intern, Due 1/19

The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF), founded in 1974, protects and promotes the civil rights of Asian Americans through litigation, legal advocacy, and community education.

The summer program is ten weeks, from June 6 through August 12, 2016.  Interns work full-time and are supervised by attorneys in specific program areas.  Depending on the program area, interns will work on litigation, legal and policy advocacy, community outreach and education, or client intakes; each program area differs in emphasis.  Summer interns attend weekly brown bag lectures on a range of public interest legal topics along with interns from other legal defense funds and civil rights groups.

The WSBA will nominate one member to be appointed by the Supreme Court to serve a three-year term on the board commencing Oct. 1, 2015.

The CPG Board is the regulatory authority for the practice of Certified Professional Guardians – individuals and agencies – in Washington state. The board is charged with establishing the standards and criteria for the certification of professional guardians, as defined by RCW 11.88.008. The board meets regularly to review applications for certification, adopt and implement regulations relating to standards and practice, ethics and training for professional guardians, and to review grievances. PLS provides civil legal services to indigent prisoners in New York State prisons, in cases where appointed counsel is not available.

American Civil Liberties Union Seeking Voter-Engagement Advocate, Full Time Position, Limited Term

The American Civil Liberties Union of Washington (ACLU-WA) is seeking a Yakima-based Voter Engagement Advocate.

Voting among Latinos in Yakima has been low because the system of voting for the City Council did not provide Latinos an opportunity to elect individuals of their choosing.  As a result of a recent lawsuit brought by the ACLU-WA, the election of Yakima City Council members has been restructured into seven single member districts, two of which are largely Latino.  The ACLU-WA wishes to help the community educate Latino voters about the importance of voting, voter eligibility, and how to register to vote.  The Voter Engagement Advocate is part of the Field Department, and is supervised by the Field Director based in Seattle.  The Voter Engagement Advocate will be responsible for implementing our non-partisan voter education campaign to engage new voters in the upcoming 2015 City of Yakima elections.

Currently, we are looking for help in a potential suit against a housing provider for fraudulently embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars owned by low-income residents. Possible assignments include interviewing clients and witnesses, investigation and analysis of records and legal documents, drafting memoranda, drafting pleadings and motions, obtaining declarations, and propounding and responding to discovery. We value interns who are passionate about access to civil justice, self-motivated, and have strong client service and project management skills.

Washington AGO (Olympia) Seeks Assistant Attorney General – Revenue Division, Due 7/31

The Revenue Unit has an opening for a lawyer who enjoys working in a collegial and supportive environment.  Revenue AAGs primarily handle all aspects of excise and property tax refund claims and provide advice to the Department of Revenue.  Revenue AAGs generally practice before the Board of Tax Appeals (BTA) and the Thurston County Superior Court, and in the federal courts in tax disputes involving Indian law and other federal issues.  Practice in the Revenue Unit includes engaging in written discovery and taking depositions, a considerable amount of legal research and writing, arguing motions and handling hearings before the BTA, and motions practice in the Thurston County Superior Court.  Revenue AAGs also regularly handle appeals in the Washington Court of Appeals and the Washington Supreme Court, and occasionally work on tax cases that reach the United States Supreme Court.  Revenue cases often involve challenging and complex statutory and constitutional issues, and multi-million dollar refund claims.  And since virtually all business activity in Washington is taxed, Revenue AAGs get to learn about all sorts of different businesses.

NWIRP’s Seattle Office services low-income immigrants and refugees in Western Washington. The office provides direct legal representation, referrals to pro bono attorneys, pro se assistance, and workshops on immigration matters ranging from asylum, citizenship, family petitions, and protections for immigrant children and victims of crimes.

The internship is open to first, second, and third year law students. Applicants should have excellent written and oral communication skills, an interest in immigration law, an ability to work in a diverse and fast-paced work environment, and a commitment to advancing and defending the legal rights of low-income immigrants and refugees. The Center for Reproductive Rights (the Center) is the premier global legal organization dedicated to advancing women’s reproductive health, self-determination, and dignity. The Center’s U.S. Policy and Advocacy (USPA) department is looking for an enthusiastic, resourceful and highly organized law student intern with a commitment to reproductive rights issues to engage in a variety of projects related to federal policy analysis and nonprofit advocacy. This internship will provide the successful candidate with experience in the day-to day operations of a dynamic in-house federal policy team, including legislative analysis and drafting, coalition advocacy, and translating legal and legislative language into persuasive policy documents.

The internship is part-time, and will begin in September 2015 and end in November 2015. Exact schedule is flexible according to the student’s academic schedule, but preference will be given to candidates that are available for a minimum of 15 hours/week spread over multiple days. The Access to Justice Board’s Conference Planning Committee is now accepting proposals for 2015 Access to Justice Conference workshops.  This year’s conference will focus on solutions to address structural impediments to equitable justice and meet the needs of our growing client community.  We encourage and invite you to submit a 90 minute workshop proposal for consideration by the committee.  Proposals should be consistent with the criteria outlined in the attached document.  All workshops will take place on Saturday, June 13, 2015 at the Wenatchee Convention Center.

WSAJ is committed to implementing strategies that will result in significant and measurable progress towards increasing diversity in the plaintiff’s bar. To help achieve this endeavor, WSAJ has pledged scholarship monies to assist diverse individuals in covering the tuition cost of a bar preparation course. Diversity refers to individuals who self-identify with those groups historically discriminated against and or those groups that are historically under-represented in the legal profession based on disability, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. Scholarship recipients will be selected based on several criteria, including (but not limited to) demonstrated interest and intent to practice in the plaintiff’s bar, financial need, academic achievements, extracurricular and community activities, and life experiences. No single criteria is determinative.

Lawyers Fostering Independence Offering Free CLE This Friday

Lawyers Fostering Independence (LFI) provides free civil legal services to young people who have been in foster, group, or kinship care at some point while growing up. With the help of volunteer attorneys, our mission is to improve outcomes for former foster youth by providing them with access to legal services – services that can mitigate the specific adversities experienced by these youth who have been raised in our care.

Our all-day training is on December 5th from 9:00am-3:30pm at Garvey Schubert Barer.

The morning will consist of an introduction to LFI, hearing from former foster youth about their experiences and needs, and our Trauma-Informed Legal Representation CLE (1.5 ethics credits pending). The afternoon will include two training sessions: one on credit and debt issues and the other on sealing juvenile records and vacating adult records. 1.25 CLE credits pending for each of these sessions.

  • Jacqueline McMurtrie is an Associate Professor at the University of Washington School of Law and the founder and Director of the Innocence Project Northwest (IPNW). The only resource of its kind in Washington State, IPNW’s mission is to exonerate the innocent, remedy causes of wrongful conviction and offer law students an outstanding education. Since 1997, IPNW has obtained exonerations of thirteen men and women who collectively served over 90 years in prison for crimes they did not commit.
  • Fernanda Torres is a Staff Attorney and Volunteer Coordinator at the Innocence Project Northwest (IPNW). She helps oversee the screening and review of applications for assistance and leads the litigation of non-DNA cases. She recruits and supervises IPNW volunteers. Prior to joining IPNW, Ms. Torres practiced criminal defense as a public defender and in private practice.

Pro Bono Opportunity with the King County Bar Association’s Housing Justice Project and Family Law Program

Significant change, whether individual or within an organization can be challenging. Even when we want to change, it doesn’t happen easily. I recently heard implicit bias compared to a habit, albeit a bad one. Think about how hard it is to change a habit…

A couple of months ago, my brother in law was coming over to my house to pick up his dog after work. We’d talked earlier and he reminded me to leave the front door open for him. Then he sent me a text about 15 minutes before I was leaving as a second reminder. “Leave the door unlocked, leave the door unlocked,” I chanted in my head as I gathered my things to go. Then I went through my mental list of what I needed to bring with me, made sure I had it all, walked out, locked the door and left. His poor dog was locked inside.

Even though I wanted to change that habit and was focusing a lot of mental energy on doing something different, the moment I got distracted, I forgot and went back to what I do every day.

Now imagine there are a bunch of individuals trying to change an organization. But they’ve all learned and practiced habits of stereotypes, biases, and institutional oppression for years. Some have even gotten rewarded for this behavior by being told they’re a “good fit” at the company and getting promoted. Some are the founders of the organization or have worked there so long they see any mention of needed change as a personal affront. Others have been going along to get along, trying not to make waves by bringing up experiences of marginalization. They may even be telling themselves they imagined it or making excuses for oppressive behavior such as, “I know he didn’t mean it that way.”

The classroom is the place where a child’s vision first becomes essential. In American elementary schools, teachers and administrators rarely have the necessary information related to vision abilities of children that are so critical to reading. Currently, access to assessment and support depends on the size and quality of schools, educational programs, and intervention strategies and availability of support. Medical providers and others screening for vision problems often rely on the same eye chart that the school screenings use, which checks only for distance vision. New approaches to vision assessment and therapy – and the use of technologies to provide better access to data about these issues — are being developed. How do we ensure that ALL children have access to these advances? Methods and strategies to improve outcomes for students with vision problems will be a result of sharing knowledge and developing partnerships among the many stakeholders – which is the focus of this symposium.

Kendall Fellowship in Environmental Justice and Climate Policy, Due 10/31

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), the leading science-based organization at the center of today’s most exciting and important policy debates, seeks outstanding candidates for the Kendall Science Fellows program. This up to two-year fellowship is open to candidates who will have completed their Ph.D. by spring 2015. The fellow will work with staff in both the Center for Science and Democracy and the Climate and Energy Program at UCS, and with external partners from environmental justice (EJ) organizations, to study costs and benefits of emissions reduction strategies to combat climate change.  The fellow will contribute to formulating research questions, investigating, presenting, and making policy and other recommendations to strengthen connections and bridge gaps between the mainstream environmental movement and environmental justice movement. ACLU of Washington Seeking Temporary Legislative Session Aide, Due Before 11/1

The ACLU of Washington is a non-profit public interest organization devoted to protecting civil rights and civil liberties. The Legislative Session Aide is part of the Policy Advocacy Group, which consists of legislative, field and policy staff who advance the ACLU-WA’s priorities at the state and local level and strategically involve ACLU-WA supporters in that effort.

The Legislative Session Aide will support the Legislative Director during the 2015 state legislative session in Olympia.  The Legislative Director is primarily in Olympia during the session and relies on the Session Aide, who works in our Seattle office, for managing scheduling, bill analysis and tracking, and other important support work.  The Session Aide also works within a closely coordinated four-person team consisting of the Legislative Director, Legislative Associate (who primarily lobbies in Olympia along with the Legislative Director) and Policy Advocacy Group Assistant (based in Seattle).  This is a full-time, temporary position which begins as soon as possible in November, and continues through the conclusion of the 2015 legislative session, currently slated for late April.

The Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) seeks experienced second or third-year law students or LLM students with a strong commitment to social justice to provide legal research and analysis as part of a semester-long unpaid internship opportunity. CCR is a national not-for-profit legal, educational, and advocacy organization dedicated to advancing and protecting the rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

King County Superior Court Seeking On-Call Bailiffs, Paid Position

Temporary, at-will employee who is employed at the pleasure of the hiring authority, King County Superior Court. The position is short term in duration, 910 hours or less in a calendar year. Work is sporadic and not guaranteed. Employee will cover in court for absent bailiffs when they are on leave.

Duties: Assist the assigned judge, act as a liaison between the court and other agencies, jurisdictions, jurors observers, court staff visitors and the general public. Handle sensitive, confidential and potentially volatile situations. Maintain database of case management. Ensures confidential and direct support to facilitate the operation of the Court.

Skills required: Ability to work in high pressure environment in a calm, professional manner. Ability to maintain confidential information on matters before the court. Skill in organizational techniques including prioritizing multiple tasks while adapting to frequent and sudden changes in workload demand. Must be able to work both independently and as a member of a team.

Rate of pay is $27.61 per hour, with 40 hours of paid training provided prior to assignments. This on-call position is not benefits eligible.

Children’s Law Center of California (CLC) represents children who have been abused, neglected, or abandoned that come under the protection of either the Los Angeles or Sacramento County Juvenile Dependency Court systems. Children’s Law Center was created by the Superior Court in 1990 to serve as appointed counsel for these Los Angeles youth. In July of 2011 we opened our doors in Sacramento County and now serve as appointed counsel for all abused and neglected children in both Los Angeles and Sacramento counties.
