The scourge of family and intimate partner violence plagues every community and causes long-term physical and emotional injuries to victims and children. Despite strong legislative safeguards, judges across the state have been unwilling to grant the full protections of the Domestic Violence Prevention Act (DVPA). NJP’s statewide campaign to ensure families and children receive the full protections of law resulted in several court rulings that dramatically improve protections for Washington families. Recent law school graduates (Class of 2016 or 2017) are invited to apply for a two-year juvenile defense fellowship at the National Juvenile Defender Center (NJDC) in Washington, D.C. starting in September 2017.

The Gault Fellowship is in honor of the U.S. Supreme Court case In re Gault. The Gault decision extended to children many of the same due process protections afforded to adults accused of crimes, including the right to counsel. Learn more and apply here.

New online tool helps veterans identify legal issues and take action to resolve them 

The American Bar Association, ARAG® legal insurance and CuroLegal announced the launch of a new online tool, Legal Checkup for Veterans. The free web-based application helps veterans identify legal needs in their lives – and provides them with straightforward suggestions and resources to help resolve their legal issues.

The online tool is part of a signature initiative by ABA President Linda Klein to improve legal services for veterans, and will complement other resources being developed by the ABA Veterans Legal Services Commission .

“Legal Checkup for Veterans is a much-needed tool that offers a necessary first step in solving this important group’s access to justice issues,” Klein said. “It provides veterans with free and fast help in identifying their legal needs and clear paths to resolution.” Further information here.

The second annual North Sound Clinic will be hosted in Seattle on 24 October 2015, at the University of Washington School of Law.  The Clinic’s goal is to ensure that every attending Veteran and spouse meets with a lawyer and leaves the Clinic with an executed and notarized will, power of attorney, and health care directive.

To participate in the Clinic, Veterans apply online and the information requested in the application is used to create unique estate planning documents for each Veteran client. Not all that apply are accepted, and the Clinic reserves the right to determine rules of use and participation.  Once the Veteran and spouse are accepted, Clinic staff assigns them an appointment time.  On the day of the Clinic, Veterans check in, enjoy refreshments, and visit with the clinic partners and other veterans until their appointment time.

At their appointment time, the assigned law clerk greets the Veteran and their spouse, and accompanies them to a room where they meet in confidence with an assigned lawyer.  The lawyer interviews, counsels, and advises the clients while the law clerks draft any changes to the packet of pre-filled estate planning documents.  The lawyer reviews these with the clients and, once final copies are printed, guides them through execution of the documents.  Volunteer notaries public assist with formally executing the documents.  Finally, the law clerk escorts the clients back to the lobby.

A free Continuing Legal Education training class precedes each Clinic event, to teach lawyers and supporting volunteers the estate planning process, and to acquaint them with the basic documents used at the Clinic.

As one second-year law student volunteer observed, “As I saw the Vets leave after their sessions, they left holding hands with their spouses, smiling and thanking volunteers.  It was apparent that the services we provided had both legal and emotional benefits for the clients.”  Those legal and emotional benefits extend to the students, who find it very gratifying to serve the Veterans population, while learning about estate planning from practicing attorneys.

Law students can volunteer in two ways. The first is to volunteer for the day of the clinic, for a morning shift, afternoon shift, or all day (both) shift. The day of shifts will involve a combination of observing attorneys advising veteran clients, as well as general all-around and administrative tasks. The Clinic will work diligently to provide a combination of exposure to legal work as well as general purpose work. The second way to volunteer is for making confirmation calls to the veteran clients of their appointments, which will occur on Sat Oct 17th. This option allows for an hour or two of service, though the confirmations are more administrative than legal work. ABA Announces Mini-Grants for Projects Expanding Pro Bono Attorneys Representation of Unaccompanied Minor Immigrants

ABA Working Group on Unaccompanied Minor Immigrants is pleased to announce the availability of mini-grants to legal assistance providers engaging pro bono attorneys to represent unaccompanied minor immigrants. The mini-grants are intended to provide initial financial support for innovative and sustainable pro bono models of legal representation of unaccompanied minor immigrants.

Equal Justice Works Career Fair & Conference – Last week for interview applications!

The Equal Justice Works annual Conference and Career Fair is the largest national public interest legal career fair in the country.  More than 1,200 students from 165 law schools attend for two days of interviews, workshops, networking and other career opportunities.  More than 140 public interest employers conduct interviews for internship and full-time positions and meet with students in informal “table talk” settings to discuss public interest legal opportunities.  The Conference and Career Fair also features workshops on various public interest careers and job search advice, resume and cover letter review, mock interviews, and more. Students and recent graduates can apply for interviews through September 14 and may register to attend informal table talk networking and workshop sessions through October 9. King County’s First Equity & Social Justice Strategic Plan: We Want to Hear from Local Organizations!

King County is in the early stages of developing an actionable, countywide strategic plan to advance Equity and Social Justice in our region.  We need your input to ensure the plan is informed and grounded in the true needs and opportunities within communities, as well as how the county can act as a responsive and effective partner. 

We are asking organizations in all sectors to please go to our survey to share your ideas on how to increase equity in King County.  Let us know what issues we should collectively tackle, what’s working to increase equity, and what are emerging opportunities. We also want your ideas about how we can collectively partner to advance equity in our region.

Due July 17: U.S. Dept of Health & Human Service, Civil Rights Division seeking recent grads for general attorney positions!

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the General Counsel, Civil Rights Division is seeking applicants with at least one year of legal experience post bar for two general attorney positions in Washington, D.C. at the GS-11 to GS-14 level ($63,722 – 139,523).  The attorneys will provide legal advice and services to the Office for Civil Rights (OCR), in one position, in regard to the enforcement and administration of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy, Security, and Breach Notification Rules; and in the other position, in regard to civil rights issues with a primary focus on the on the enforcement and administration of Section 1557 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which prohibits discrimination in certain health programs or activities on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, sex, and disability.   Applications may be submitted until July 17, 2015.  See attached announcements for additional information.

Due August 15: Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth – LEGAL ADVOCACY INTERN – FALL 2015

The legal internships at the Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth will give law students an opportunity to work on the cutting edge of constitutional and human rights law. The United States is the only country in the world that sentences children to life without the possibility of parole and is one of only three countries that has failed to ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child which expressly forbids this practice. There are more than 2,500 individuals currently serving life without parole sentences that they received as juveniles. The goal of the campaign is to support litigation and legislative strategies to abolish life-without-parole sentences for juveniles in the United States and ensure that all children have a meaningful opportunity to obtain release.

The legal advocacy intern’s work may include researching and writing legal memos analyzing potential priority states for the future legislative sessions, aiding in the drafting of state level legislation, anticipating and researching implementation challenges of proposed legislation, and exploring potential partnerships with state-based community groups.  During the legislative session, this work will be dynamic based on the advocacy team’s needs.

Brennan Center for Justice in NYC Seeks UW Law Students to Apply for Fall Externship

The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law is a nonpartisan public policy and law institute that focuses on improving the systems of democracy and justice in the United States. Among our core priorities, we fight to protect voting rights, to address the challenge of special interest money in our politics, to end mass incarceration, and to advance Constitutional protections in the fight against terrorism. A singular institution – part think tank, part public interest law firm, part advocacy group – the Brennan Center combines scholarship, legislative and legal advocacy, and communications to win meaningful, measurable change in the public sector.

Each semester, the Brennan Center hosts 4-5 law students to work on current and cutting edge legal issues, including national security issues raised by the Patriot Act, expanding voter registration, strengthening campaign finance laws, and reforming our criminal justice system. Our research, policy development, and advocacy focus on systemic reform that combats discrimination and inequality and promotes civic participation. We will accept applications through April 15, 2015 from students, who not only work in the priority areas defined below, but who provide service to low-income communities in other areas of law. The 300 service hours required to earn the education award can be completed anytime from when the application is accepted and the background check has been initiated through August 31, 2015.

PRIORITY AREAS: Priority will be given to applications from students who are serving veterans, military families or victims of disasters, or focusing on removing barriers to employment or housing. However, we also have many spots available for students working with other populations and in other areas of law.

Some more examples of the type of work students can do within these priority areas include:

  • Direct legal services: intake, legal form preparation, performing client and witness interviews, advocating for clients by telephone and in person, attending hearings, assisting attorneys in legal representation, carrying out legal research and writing
  • Outreach and education: developing and distributing fact sheets, developing and delivering training on legal topics or on how to access legal services, ensuring potential clients are aware of their rights and available services
  • Capacity building: activities which build the capacity of your host organization or other organizations to provide services in the previously specified priority areas, such as an organizational assessment, compiling best practices, organizing focus groups, leading planning committees

Attention Recent Grads! You Can Help Preserve Public Service Loan Forgiveness

Please don’t forget to fill out and pass on Equal Justice Works’ quick survey about the effect of Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) on your career. While they hear anecdotally how critical PSLF is to making long term public interest careers possible, there is little hard data on the program’s impact. If Congress does propose capping the amount of forgiveness borrowers can earn, this data will be invaluable in helping Equal Justice Works and a coalition of interested groups advocate for it. The deadline for completing the survey is March 2, but please complete it as soon as possible in case Congress acts sooner. The attorney must:

  • Be available to travel occasionally around the state, and may spend some time in Olympia during the legislative session.
  • Work with teams of attorneys on complex litigation, including class actions.
  • Identify practices and laws that adversely affect the rights and diminish the benefits for low income populations.
  • Coordinate with other advocacy groups and legal service organizations and the private bar to identify opportunities and execute strategies to advance the law for low income populations.

Peggy Browning Fund

The mission of the Peggy Browning Fund is to educate and inspire the next generation of advocates for workplace justice. Through fellowships, workers’ rights conferences, networking and other programs, we provide unique opportunities for law students to work for economic and social justice

Our core program is the Summer Fellowship Program, which is comprised of a 10-week fellowship during the summer months at pre-selected labor-related organizations around the country.  In 2015, we will support between 60 and 70 funded summer fellowships, plus one part-time funded School-Year Fellowship at the Chicago Newspaper Guild for 2015 – 2016.

The Summer Fellowship Program provides stipends to 1st and 2nd year law students who dedicate this time to advancing the cause of workers’ rights.  We routinely collaborate with 149 participating law schools and selected mentor organizations nationwide.

Summer Fellowship stipends will be a minimum of $5,000 per student for the ten-week employment period.  In many cases, mentor organizations will supplement the stipend.

City of Seattle LogoThe Employment Section in the Civil Division of the Seattle City Attorney’s Office has externship opportunities available throughout the year for 2L and 3L law students, and also for 1L students during the summer after their first year. The Employment Section provides labor and employment advice to all City of Seattle departments (for example the Fire Department, Seattle City Light, and the Parks Department) and it also represents City departments in labor arbitrations, in administrative hearings and in federal and state court. The legal issues within the Employment Section’s area of expertise include: wage and hour issues, disability accommodation, anti-discrimination laws, employee discipline, and collective bargaining issues. Externs would work directly with Assistant City Attorneys in the Employment Section, to provide legal research assistance, to draft briefs, motions and witness declarations, and to perform other functions according to case needs and the extern’s interests. In addition, externs would be provided with opportunities for client contact and for observation of depositions, hearings and/or court proceedings. The externship provides the opportunity to work closely with an enthusiastic and experienced group of labor and employment attorneys in a public sector environment, and so would be a good fit for students interested in labor and employment law and/or public sector work.

National Veterans Legal Services Seeks Litigation Attorney, Deadline 3/1.

NVLSPThe National Veterans Legal Services Program (NVLSP) is a national nonprofit public interest law firm dedicated to assisting veterans, service members, and their families receive the federal benefits to which they are entitled.  To this end, NVLSP represents veterans and surviving family members before the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims (CAVC) and other federal courts, the Board of Veterans’ Appeals, and VA regional offices.  NVLSP often serves as amicus or lead counsel in impact litigation throughout the United States.  In addition, NVLSP trains hundreds of other lawyer and non-lawyer advocates in veterans/military law and publishes advocacy materials to assist these advocates in their representation of veterans, service members, and their families.  Among NVLSP’s advocacy publications is The Veterans Benefits Manual, a 1,900-page veterans law treatise published by LexisNexis.

The major responsibility of the Veterans Law Litigation Attorney is representing veterans and their families before the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims, an Article I appellate court.  This responsibility will entail conducting legal research, drafting legal briefs, and possibly conducting oral argument.  Other duties involve training and mentoring of veterans’ advocates and writing legal advocacy materials.

Qualifications: J.D.; excellent research and writing skills; and strong academic background.  Litigation, public interest, administrative law, or law school clinical experience would be helpful.  Experience in veterans law, although not required, is preferred.

Applications are being accepted for a paid summer internship with the Diversity Initiatives staff at the Law School Admission Council (LSAC). The summer intern works under the general supervision of the Executive Director for Diversity Initiatives. The intern will assist office staff with LSAC’s diversity initiatives, including but not limited to, the DiscoverLaw.org website, DiscoverLaw.org Prelaw Undergraduate Scholars Programs, and LSAC Law School Forums. The intern will be expected to prepare memos and written assignments, answer inquiries from prospective students, and assist with other projects as assigned. Some travel will be required. The duration of the position is 10 to 12 weeks.

Qualifications: The summer internship is restricted to currently enrolled law students in good academic standing. Preference will be given to candidates with advanced communication skills, including strong knowledge and understanding of various social media websites. We are seeking applicants who share LSAC’s commitment to promoting diversity in the legal profession.

Compensation: The intern will be expected to work a 37.5-hour week, and the compensation will be $22 per hour. The intern will work at the LSAC headquarters in Newtown, PA, and housing assistance will be provided, if needed.

Under auspices of the Washington State Supreme Court CLNS Update Committee, work with the Washington State Office of Civil Legal Aid and Washington State University’s Social and Economic Sciences Research Center (WSU-SESRC) conducting face-to-face interviews to update our understanding of the unmet civil (non-criminal) legal problems faced by low-income residents of Washington State.

Time commitment: Completion of up to 3 hours of required training; up to 15 contact hours for completing 8 interviews and entering information.

Interviewer’s primary responsibility will be to conduct face-to-face interviews with low-income Washington State residents & enter the data into a secure data base following the interview. The project includes mandatory training in interviewing protocols.

The Institutions Project (IP) is seeking a full-time attorney with a minimum of five years of litigation experience.  IP is an advocacy team consisting of five attorneys, a paralegal, and two legal assistants. IP engages in system systemic advocacy for individuals and groups, in collaboration with other programs and the private, on behalf of people in facilities for the developmentally disabled, psychiatric hospitals, and adult and juvenile state and local correctional facilities throughout Washington.  IP systemic advocacy has focused on cases that have a broad impact on solving the most critical issues of clients in institutions, including class actions, legislative representation and other policy advocacy on behalf of clients.

Under the supervision of the Project Coordinator, staff attorneys provide civil legal advice and representation in areas of importance to Columbia Legal Services low-income clients.  Staff attorneys are expected to be able to use the full range of potential forums appropriate to address relevant issues for our clients, including litigation, alternative dispute resolution, and administrative or legislative representation.  The changing needs of our clients require attorneys to engage in an ongoing effort to gain and share expertise and resources with their coworkers and others throughout the Alliance for Equal Justice.

Post Graduate Short Term Public Service Funding 2014

The Post-Graduate Fellowship Program was initiated in 2013 and seeks to support new UW law graduates who are seeking employment, and who wish to provide legal services for underserved populations, by providing limited financial support while Fellows continue to search for permanent positions after the bar exam. This support will allow Fellows to continue to develop skills, contacts, and professional experience through short-term volunteer work, enabling them to better compete for permanent positions once they become available.

Each fellow must volunteer with an eligible sponsor organization, doing work that requires a JD or draws heavily on the Fellow’s legal education and training. Eligible work may include, for example, legal advocacy, direct legal services, impact litigation, or community education and organizing.

Fellowship awards will consist of a maximum of $1500 per Fellow, renewable on a monthly basis, for a maximum of four months (up to $6000 total). Fellowships must begin between August 1, 2014 and September 30, 2014, and may end no later than January 31, 2015. Fellowships will end when the Fellow finds a permanent position or at the end of the four-month fellowship period, whichever comes sooner. Recipients and sponsoring agencies will be required to certify that they will adhere to each of the goals and guidelines of the Fellowship program.

The University of Washington School of Law is accepting applications from June 2014 graduates for a limited number of short-term, post-graduate Fellowships. Applications can be accessed on Symplicity and must be uploaded to Symplicity no later than Sunday, May 4, 2014 at 11:59 p.m.

Social Justice, Conflict Resolution, and Reconciliation: An Introductory Workshop to Kingian Nonviolence on May 1-2

Kingian Nonviolence is a framework for transforming and reconciling conflict that was developed out of the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the organizing strategies of the Civil Rights Movement. The goal is to prevent violence, yes, but its ambitions are even bigger: to pursue reconciliation by putting strength and agency in the hands of those who choose to act, talk, and think in healthy, humanly-connected ways that pursue a common higher ground. An approach of nonviolence, as a result, has wide applicability for how people set goals, declare values, and interact with others. In this workshop we will study the nature of human conflict, the roots of violence, the principles of nonviolence, and the “six steps of Kingian Nonviolence,” which will discuss the role of direct action, education, negotiation, and other steps critical in movement building. Specifically, we will address strategies and principles on how to respond to both interpersonal conflict as well as larger social conflicts.

We ask participants to commit to both days of the workshop.

May 2 @ University of Washington, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM

We have more spots available for students working with various populations in any area of law in addition to funding for students providing legal services to veterans, including those serving at legal aid, public defender, other nonprofit organizations, or local, county or state government agencies.

These funds are currently underutilized, so please take advantage of this invaluable opportunity!  By completing a simple application and consenting to a background check, students have the opportunity to earn additional funds for the work they are already doing this summer and throughout the school year while still being able to receive outside funding up to $4,300.

REAP Seeking Bilingual Spanish-Speaking Extern for the Fall in Yakima, WA, Due 3/31

REAP is a collaborative externship program sponsored by the Washington Alliance for Equal Justice and all three Washington law schools – University of Washington, Seattle University, and Gonzaga University, as well as the University of Idaho. This unique public service opportunity, offered only in the fall term, allows a cohort of law students to contribute valuable legal education and assistance to migrant and seasonal farm workers in Central Washington, while learning together about the workplace justice issues facing this most vulnerable group of immigrant workers. Students will participate in outreach to farm workers living in labor camps throughout Central Washington, as well as carry out research and writing in support of labor rights litigation and immigration cases at one of the placement legal assistance organizations. In the past few years, students have worked on sexual harassment litigation, class actions involving guest worker programs, and affirmative immigration applications and DACA pro se clinics for young immigrants.

LCBH’s policy program endeavors to improve the access of low-income households to safe, accessible, affordable housing through original research and advocacy to bring about systemic change for housing justice. The policy intern will work directly with the Housing Policy Coordinator and the Legal Director to further LCBH’s policy and advocacy initiatives.

Transitional Housing and TA Staff Attorney Position

The Victim Rights Law Center (VRLC), a nonprofit law center that provides free legal services to victims of sexual assault in Oregon and in Massachusetts, as well as legal technical assistance nationally, seeks a full-time, Oregon-licensed attorney to join our team and coordinate the VRLC’s transitional housing partnership. The attorney will provide training as well as legal assistance to sexual violence survivors who are homeless, with a special focus on survivors who are older, Latina or have disabilities. Services to be provided include legal screening and limited legal representation, sexual assault and legal trainings (for both homeless advocates as well as survivors experiencing homelessness) on how to use existing civil laws to meet sexual assault survivors’ needs. The attorney will also help the VRLC’s technical assistance team support lawyers, advocates and other victim service providers in their efforts to use existing civil laws to meet the needs of sexual assault survivors. This position is grant funded. Applicants should have a minimum of three (3) years legal experience, including some litigation practice, as well as experience working with sexual assault survivors and with vulnerable populations. Spanish language fluency is preferred, but not required.

Privacy Project Staff Attorney Position

The Victim Rights Law Center (VRLC) seeks a full-time attorney, with excellent writing, product development and organizational and communication skills, as well as a strong work ethic, a good sense of humor, and a commitment to serving vulnerable populations. Based in our Portland, Oregon, office, the successful candidate will help implement VRLC’s new Privacy Rights Project by conducting legal research, developing resources, creating curriculum, and delivering state and national trainings on the privacy rights of victims of sexual assault, stalking and domestic violence. Applicants should have a minimum of three (3) years legal experience, expertise serving sexual assault survivors and/or addressing victims’ privacy rights, and experience creating and delivering engaging, effective, in-person and web-based trainings.

The Eviction Defense Collaborative seeks an enthusiastic individual to join our team in fighting for tenant rights and saving homes. As a staff attorney you will work with a team of attorneys, interns and volunteers in assisting primarily in pro. per. tenants fight their eviction lawsuits.

The Eviction Defense Collaborative (EDC) provides legal assistance and advocacy to low-income and indigent tenants in San Francisco who are being evicted. We assist by educating tenants about the legal process, advising them of their options, drafting responsive legal documents, providing referrals to assist them in fighting their evictions and negotiating legal settlements. The EDC also administers one-time rental assistance grants and loans to help tenants who are behind in their rent to pay the rent and stay in their homes. The work at the EDC is made possible by a small staff and many volunteers from local schools and the community. The work environment at the EDC is collegial, rather than having a rigid hierarchy of job positions, and we work as a team to assist the tenants who seek our help.

U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs Seeking Summer Intern in Washington D.C., Applications Accepted on Rolling Basis

Professional Staff Group (PSG) VII, the Office of the General Counsel’s Appellate Litigation Division, represents the Secretary before the United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims (CAVC). It is the newest and largest group in OGC. With more than 120 persons, the staff includes approximately 70 appellate attorneys and a support staff of paralegals, legal assistants, and copy clerks. A 14-member management team completes the PSG VII staff.

Interns will initially be provided instruction in veterans law, as well as the VA adjudication system. The student will then be assigned a limited case load and will perform research and writing tasks associated with the needs of individual cases depending on their procedural posture. It is expected that at the completion of the
externship, the student will have prepared a pre-Briefing Conference memo, participated in a Briefing Conference, drafted procedural motions, and drafted and filed an Appellate brief with the United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims (CAVC). Additionally, the student will be expected to attend and participate in moot
courts in preparation for oral argument before the CAVC.
