U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI), a non-governmental, not-for-profit national organization dedicated to addressing the needs and rights of refugees and immigrants, seeks interns to provide support to USCRI’s Immigrant Children’s Legal Program (formerly the National Center for Refugee and Immigrant Children). Our office is located in Crystal City, part of the Washington D.C. metropolitan area.

The Immigrant Children’s Legal Program (ICLP) assists undocumented immigrant children ages 0-18 who are in removal proceedings. ICLP screens children for eligibility for legal relief from deportation; recruits and trains volunteer attorneys; and matches children with attorneys.

Attention 1Ls and 2Ls! Litigation Judicial Intern Opportunity Applications Now Open, Due 1/9/15

The American Bar Association Section of Litigation will begin accepting applications for its Summer 2015 Judicial Intern Opportunity Program on November 3. Applications for first-year law students will be accepted December 1, 2014, in accordance with NALP guidelines. The program is a full-time (32 hours per week), six-week minimum, summer internship program open to all first- or second-year diverse law students. Screening interviews will begin in December and will continue through the application process.  The first 500 applicants will be guaranteed at least one interview.

Please review detailed program information or frequently asked questions prior to applying to the program. Students do not need to be an ABA member to apply, however they will be required to join the ABA and the Section of Litigation if selected to the program.   Applications must be submitted by the January 9, 2015 deadline. Screening interviews will be used to better determine student qualifications.  Screening interviews will begin in December and will continue through the application process.  The first 500 applicants will be guaranteed at least one interview.  Additional applicants will be interviewed on an as needed basis.  We will make every attempt to interview students where they attend school and in person.  Students will be contacted by their assigned screener to set up the interview.

Only qualified students will be sent on for judicial interviews.  Students will be notified when they are sent on for a judicial interview.  Judicial interviews will continue until all positions are filled.  All applicants will be notified when the program or certain locations have closed for the year and all positions are filled.

The program is only open to students who have not previously participated as an intern in the program.

Americans United for Separation of Church and State – the nation’s leading church-state advocacy organization – is seeking first-year, second-year, and third-year law students to work as interns in our legal department in Washington, D.C. Full-time positions are available during the summer; both part-time and full-time positions are available during the fall and spring.

Americans United has a diverse litigation and amicus curiae practice addressing a wide variety of church-state issues. We challenge religious activities in the public schools, public financing of religious institutions, and government-sponsored prayers and religious displays. We defend women’s, LGBT, and other civil rights against religion-based discrimination and deprivation. Most of our cases involve novel, cutting-edge First Amendment and other constitutional issues.

The duties of legal interns include assisting with ongoing litigation by conducting legal and factual research and writing; drafting demand letters to resolve constitutional violations without filing suit; and analyzing potential new cases. Legal interns may also draft pleadings, briefs, or discovery.

Legal Foundation of Washington Seeking Education Director, Open Until Filled

The Legal Foundation of Washington (LFW) seeks an Education Director to staff the Equal Justice Coalition and support our efforts to maintain and increase public funding for civil legal aid at the federal, state and local levels. The Education Director works closely with the Access to Justice Board, a core workgroup, an advisory council, stakeholder organizations, and more than 3000 friends of equal justice that include lawyers, judges, community leaders, law students and members of the public committed to making equal justice for all a reality in Washington state.

The Education Director educates the public, elected officials and the media about the importance of civil legal aid for low-income people. The Education Director works closely with key partners, stakeholders and our Olympia-based lobbying team to develop and implement communication strategies, education efforts, and media outreach to preserve and increase funding for civil legal aid in Washington. The Haywood Burns Fellowships are designed to encourage students to work in the NLG’s tradition of “people’s lawyering.” The program exists to help students apply their talents and skills to find creative ways to use the law to advance justice. Burns Fellowships provoke law students to question traditional notions of how one must practice law and to provide a summer experience that will enrich and challenge them.

Over the years, the Summer Projects program has expanded to place hundreds of students with public interest organizations working to protect and further the civil rights of oppressed people in the United States. The Northwest Justice Project (NJP) is hosting an Employment Opportunity Legal Corps (EOLC) Fellow sponsored by Equal Justice Works and the Corporation for National and Community Service/AmeriCorps. The EOLC Fellow will focus on removing legal barriers to employment facing economically disadvantaged individuals, including but not limited to, legal assistance with vacating/sealing eligible criminal records, revocation/denial of occupational licenses, and driver’s license suspensions.

The EOLC Fellowship will target low-income and economically disadvantaged communities in Southwest Washington, including Grays Harbor, Pacific, and Lewis Counties. The AmeriCorps Fellow will be a full-time attorney based in NJP’s Aberdeen, Washington office. The attorney selected for the Fellowship will work closely with NJP’s Coordinated Legal Education, Advice and Referral system (CLEAR), NJP field offices serving the region, and will also work in collaboration with local social service providers and Pacific Mountain Workforce Development Council to identify and target barriers to employment in the service area.

Public Citizen Litigation Group Offering Summer Clerkship

public citizenPublic Citizen Litigation Group, a public interest law firm in Washington, DC, is seeking two summer law clerks for the summer of 2015. The Litigation Group is a division of Public Citizen, a research, lobbying, and public advocacy organization founded in 1971. Our areas of practice include federal health and safety regulation, access-to-courts issues, consumer litigation, open government, and the First Amendment. We litigate cases at all levels of the federal and state judiciaries. Litigation Group lawyers have argued 63 cases in the U.S. Supreme Court.

Summer law clerks do research and write legal memoranda for use in current Litigation Group cases, under the supervision of the Group’s staff lawyers. When possible, we provide summer clerks with an opportunity to draft actual litigation documents (such as briefs or complaints). Law clerks are also encouraged to participate in moot courts, observe court and congressional hearings, and attend meetings with clients.

Legal Services of Northwest Minnesota (LSNM) provides high quality legal representation and community legal education to low-income and elderly persons in 22 northwestern Minnesota counties, using three staffed law offices and 210 private Judicare attorneys.  One Fellowship is available in LSNM’s Alexandria regional office.  Based on Equal Justice Works/AmeriCorps guidelines, the term of service will begin on (Date TBD) for two years, pending renewal after the first year.

Overview
The Fellowship was established by the ACLU Board of Directors in memory of Marvin M. Karpatkin, the late General Counsel of the American Civil Liberties Union, who died in January 1975, at the age of 48.  Mr. Karpatkin was one of the ACLU’s most active attorneys during the 1960s and early 1970s.  He left his special mark in the areas of selective service and military law.  His interest in those areas grew out of his own strong opposition to the Vietnam War and his desire to help those who, younger than himself, were faced with performing military service in a war they would not support.

Racial Justice Program (RJP) attorneys and staff work to challenge racial discrimination and related issues that have a disparate impact on communities of color, particularly in the areas of criminal justice and education and seeks to provide full access to participation in the economic system regardless of race or ethnicity.  In the area of criminal justice, we are dedicated to reducing the unwarranted and disproportionate targeting and incarceration of people of color.  In the area of education, we seek to ensure that all children have access to quality education, regardless of race or ethnicity. Specifically, we have filed civil challenges to the inadequate provision of indigent criminal and juvenile defense, racial profiling, and disparate educational opportunities.  We have also campaigned against the racially-disproportionate imposition of incarceration and school discipline and are working to counteract the negative effects of discrimination in mortgage lending on communities of color.

Legal Foundation of Washington Offering 2015 Summer Goldmark Internship in Walla Walla, WA, Due 10/17 by 5:00 PM

The program is named for Charles A. Goldmark, the Foundation’s second president at his untimely death in January 1986. Chuck was a firm believer in, and a forceful advocate for, equal access to the justice system. The internship was created as a tribute to Chuck and to encourage young lawyers to emulate his ardent commitment. The Goldmark Equal Justice Internship is made possible by a matching grant from the Goldmark Family Foundation.

The STAR Project serves individuals with felony convictions, most having been released from incarceration in the past year. A majority of clients
have significant Legal Financial Obligations (LFOs) which impede their integration back into society as contributing members.  The Goldmark Intern will aid clients who receive Supplemental Security Income or Social Security Disability benefits to have their LFOs waived by the courts, and work to establish reasonable restitution payments for clients seeking employment but who have holds on their driver’s licenses.

The Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs was created in January 2012 and this commission is one of the many important ways in which the City ensures that they are actively engaging and working with  immigrant and refugee communities.

With the unprecedented growth in the foreign-born population since the 1980s, Seattle has become an increasingly multi-cultural city, rich with diversity. In keeping with the Race and Social Justice Initiative, Mayor Edward B. Murray and the Seattle City Council want to ensure that city government provides high-quality customer service to all, including immigrants and refugees living and working in Seattle, and that residents are engaged in all aspects of Seattle’s civic, economic and cultural life. To this end, the Immigrant and Refugee Commission was created in 2008.

Landesa Seeking Graduate Legal Intern, Due 3/21

he Landesa Internship Program is part of Landesa’s broader efforts to incrase the number of professionals who work on and/or have an understanding of land rights, whether in the land right field specifically, the wider development community, the government sector, or elsewhere. Graduate Legal Interns will have the opportunity to increase their understanding of Landesa’s strategies and methodologies by attending project and staff meetings. They will also take part in periodic Q&A sessions with Landesa’s land tenure experts who can speak to land rights issues, specific projects, and careers in the international development field. Upon completing this internship at Landesa, Graduate Legal Interns will be invited to join an alumni network comprised of previous interns and fellows.

The Graduate Legal Intern conducts research and supports the research efforts of others on a variety of topics relevant to Landesa’s work. Past Graduate Legal intern assisgnments include: compiling case studies of large-scale corporate land acquisitions; identifying and analyzing the particular effects of climate change on women’s land rights; conducting a legal review of Rwandan land laws; helping to write a concept note (a Landesa project design tool) for a project proposing to use mobile technology in Kenya; and identify and analyzing Myanmar’s resettlement practices and laws on takings and compensation.

The Graduate Legal intern will be supervised by a land rights attorney and will work with Landesa program staff requesting research including Program Directors and project leads.

National Juvenile Justice Network’s Leadership Institute Offers Fellowship for Juvenile Justice Advocates, Due 4/7

Chances are this army-of-one you’re picturing in your mind is ready to apply to the Youth Justice Leadership Institute, a robust, year-long fellowship program run by the National Juvenile Justice Network that focuses on cultivating and supporting professionals of color. Our goal is to create the foundation for a more effective juvenile justice reform movement by developing a strong base of advocates and organizers who reflect the communities most affected by juvenile justice system practices and policies.

The Opportunity Agenda Seeking Summer 2014 Law and Advocacy Intern, Due 4/21

The Opportunity Agenda is a non-partisan public interest organization that promotes opportunity and human rights in the United States, bringing together legal and policy advocacy, social science research, and communications strategies.  Our mission is to build the national will to expand opportunity in America.  The Opportunity Agenda focuses on issues that incorporate racial justice, women’s rights, immigrant rights and economic justice for all.

The Opportunity Agenda is seeking candidates with a demonstrated commitment to social justice and equal opportunity, strong research and writing skills, and the initiative to take on new and innovative assignments. A sense of humor and a dose of modesty are essential.

Law students will assist in legal research and writing to support The Opportunity Agenda’s Law and Advocacy work.  This summer, the focus would be on immigration policy, racial justice, human rights, and economic opportunity.  Past research topics have included the application of international human rights laws to state constitutional and statutory jurisprudence, analysis of, and advocacy around, existing state and federal policies to promote equality across race, gender, income, and other characteristics; new approaches to addressing subconscious and structural bias in the law; and promising policies for promoting immigrant rights and economic opportunity.  The work will be supervised by The Opportunity Agenda’s Robert L. Carter Fellow and Director of Law and Advocacy.

OBMICA Seeking Summer Intern to Work in Dominican Republic, Spanish Fluency Required

OBMICA, a forward-looking think tank based in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, is seeking a summer legal intern to assist in ongoing research and monitoring of human rights of migrants and their descendants in the DR. Potential projects in which the intern would participate include gender needs in the deportation process, monitoring the implementation of the national regularization plan for migrants, or others.   The intern’s work will focus on identifying the legal issues and their social implications, paying attention to human rights violations under regional and national, and international jurisprudence.

The experience will most likely involve client interaction and fact gathering with persons directly affected, as well as a heavy legal writing component, working in conjunction with OBMICA and other organizations on the ground.  The goal of the internship is to draft a legal memo that may be made public through OBMICA and their national and international partners.  A full work program will be drawn up by mutual agreement upon commencement of the internship.

Adoptions Project

The Adoptions Project provides free legal representation to foster parents who are adopting children out of foster care, and also advocates for additional services and benefits for the children being adopted. The Adoptions Project has an available position for a summer law clerk. Summer interns generally have the opportunity to: (1) acquire practical skills working with professionals from different fields; (2) conduct client interviews and help to identify gaps in clients’ services or benefits; (3) work on an adoption case from start to finish under the supervision of an attorney; and (4) conduct legal research applicable to the Project.

Community Development Project

Public Counsel’s Community Development Project (CDP) strives to build healthy, inclusive, economically stable communities through the delivery of pro bono legal services to community-based nonprofits and small businesses in Los Angeles County. CDP provides transactional legal services to nonprofits that assist lower income people and neighborhoods and to entrepreneurs located in, and employing residents of, low income neighborhoods. CDP also advances community driven planning, development and litigation strategies to promote affordable housing and equitable development, create jobs and encourage child care facilities. Our clients include neighborhood based community development corporations, housing advocacy and organizing groups and coalitions, health care clinics, small businesses and child care providers serving areas in need in Los Angeles, including Boyle Heights, South LA, Pico Union, Wilmington, San Gabriel Valley and Skid Row.

Public Counsel’s Community Development Project has an available position for a summer law clerk. The bulk of the work will involve legal research, policy analysis, writing memos, and reviewing planning documents regarding extremely low-income communities of color in Los Angeles and all over the U.S. The clerk’s work will include efforts to understand, investigate, and engage processes and policies around transit-oriented development which may result in the displacement of low-income communities. The clerk may also help support CDP’s transactional and litigation programs to advance affordable housing, child care and job creation strategies.
