The Center’s Global Legal Program (GLP) is looking for an enthusiastic, resourceful and highly organized law student intern with a commitment to reproductive rights issues to engage in a variety of legal research and writing projects related to GLP’s fact-finding, advocacy, and litigation in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and at the United Nations. Eastside Legal Assistance Program Seeking Family Law Intern, Due 12/22

The Eastside Legal Assistance Program (“ELAP”) is looking for a law student to intern in our Domestic Violence Legal Program (“DVLP”) for the Winter Quarter 2016.

ELAP is a non-profit organization that provides no-cost civil legal services to survivors of domestic violence, including related family law issues (such as custody, parenting plans, spousal support, etc.), throughout King County, Washington, and to low-income residents of East and Northeast King County.  The intern will work with staff attorneys in the representation of clients, including providing assistance to draft pleadings and to interview clients, as well as to research points of law.  By the conclusion of the internship, it is expected that the intern will craft a legal memorandum that can be used as a writing sample.

This position will provide experience in practical legal skills such as client interviewing, legal issue spotting, case development, and working with low-income clients.  In addition, the intern will learn substantive and procedural aspects to family law practice, with an emphasis on representing domestic violence survivors. This position is unpaid but can be sponsored for academic credit if available through the student’s school.

The Revenue Unit has an opening for a lawyer who enjoys working in a collegial and supportive environment.  Revenue AAGs primarily handle all aspects of excise and property tax refund claims and provide advice to the Department of Revenue.  Revenue AAGs generally practice before the Board of Tax Appeals (BTA) and the Thurston County Superior Court, and in the federal courts in tax disputes involving Indian law and other federal issues.  Practice in the Revenue Unit includes engaging in written discovery and taking depositions, a considerable amount of legal research and writing, arguing motions and handling hearings before the BTA, and motions practice in the Thurston County Superior Court.  Revenue AAGs also regularly handle appeals in the Washington Court of Appeals and the Washington Supreme Court, and occasionally work on tax cases that reach the United States Supreme Court.  Revenue cases often involve challenging and complex statutory and constitutional issues, and multi-million dollar refund claims.  And since virtually all business activity in Washington is taxed, Revenue AAGs get to learn about all sorts of different businesses.

The Director is responsible for coordinating the College’s work with the state Legislature, Governor’s Office, the Office of Financial Management and the Washington Student Achievement Council.  Monitor and analyze state and federal legislation or proposals having impact on the College, and provide information on such to the College community.  Work with the President and senior staff to develop positions on proposed state and federal legislation.  Represent the College and its positions to the Legislature and others.  Provide information to government officials as necessary.  Work with local government, business and civic organizations to provide information about the College and develop positive relationships and partnerships.

Washington Attorney General’s Office Torts Division in Tumwater Seeking Two Attorneys, Deadline 2/7

The Torts Division has two openings for attorneys – one on the Corrections litigation team and the other on the Transportation litigation team. The Corrections team defends the Department of Corrections, the natural resource and environmental agencies, Financial Institutions, and the Secretary of State among others. The Transportation team handles tort work for the Department of Transportation, the Washington State Patrol, the Department of Labor and Industries, and the Department of Health.

Specific cases are assigned based on experience and interest; however, there are ample opportunities to work on cases outside of your assigned team. Torts practices in a fast-paced environment that is inclusive, supportive and fun-loving, but that maintains the appropriate emphasis on the significance of the important policy and legal issues inherent in tort cases. While these positions are located in the AGO’s Tumwater office, travel may be required.

Specific issue focus varies throughout the year, though general issues being addressed include housing, consumer protection, children’s issues, public health/healthcare, juvenile justice, economic justice, educational reform, and corporate and government accountability.

Justice Fellows will be hosted in clusters of 2-4 in New York City’s leading non-profit legal services offices, which will be selected to participate in the IJC on a competitive the basis. Upon selection, Fellows will have the opportunity to indicate their preferences for the host organization where they will work, though the IJC will, ultimately, make placement decisions.

Justice Fellows will represent immigrants with the most complex cases that require lawyers to handle the case from start to finish, such as deportation defense and affirmative petitions for victims of crime, domestic violence and human trafficking, among others. The Justice Fellows will be primarily supervised by experienced attorneys at their host organization, with supplemental support from the IJC’s own supervisory staff.
