Our lawyers and activists protect user privacy, free expression, and innovation through impact litigation, policy analysis, grassroots activism, and technology development. We work to ensure that rights and freedoms are enhanced and protected as our use of technology grows. Legal interns assist in all aspects of litigation, including legal research, factual investigation, and drafting of memoranda and briefs, while also helping with policy research, client counseling, and the development of public education materials. New Markets Lab Announces Fall Legal Internship in International Trade & Development- Deadline 7/15

The New Markets Lab (NML) works to open up new market potential in developing countries through targeted, inclusive legal and regulatory interventions. Our innovative approach, which strengthens feedback loops between policymakers and the market, helps address concrete legal and regulatory challenges and facilitate broader systemic change.

NML is a non-profit organization founded in early 2013 by Katrin Kuhlmann, a lawyer and former trade negotiator with nearly twenty years of experience in trade, law, and development. We work in developing markets across sub-Saharan Africa. Our partners include the International Fund for Agricultural Development, the Global Harvest Initiative, and the Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs.

The New Markets Lab is seeking a passionate, motivated, and flexible individual to provide research and legal support to Katrin Kuhlmann, the President of the New Markets Lab (NML). The Legal Intern will: conduct research on trade, investment and related laws in African markets; update ongoing projects, including providing analysis for NML’s legal guides; and analyze agricultural supply chains with untapped economic potential, identifying the legal constraints to development.

The Legal Intern will gain experience researching concrete challenges facing businesses in developing countries. The position represents an ideal opportunity for the selected candidate to become involved in the early stages of an innovative and fast-paced initiative, influencing the scope and focus of its work. The Moderate Means Program (MMP) is a UW Law in-house pro bono program that is a great way to get experience interviewing lots of clients without having to leave Gates Hall! The goal of the program is to increase access to civil legal services by people of moderate means who cannot afford an attorney but make too much money to qualify for traditional legal aid services. The program is focused on the areas of Family, Housing and Consumer law.

Law students serving as MMP volunteer interns will interview potential clients by telephone to collect information and evaluate their cases. Qualifying cases will be referred by the MMP interns to participating attorneys who have agreed to represent Moderate Means Program clients for a reduced fee. MMP interns will be expected to commit to a minimum of five hours a week for the duration of spring quarter and this summer (one hour is a weekly staff meeting).

The Access to Justice Board is turning 20!  In recognition of this milestone, the Washington Supreme Court and the Washington Bar Association is hosting a celebratory reception at the Sheraton Hotel on Thursday, May 15th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  We are looking for a few volunteers to serve in greeting and registration duties at this event.  Through an expansive network that includes the courts, the Bar, legal aid providers, funders, and hundreds of volunteers, the Access to Justice Board works to achieve equal access to the justice system for the most vulnerable in our state.  The 20thAnniversary Celebration will be a wonderful evening of networking and recounting stories from the ATJ Board’s rich history over the past 2 decades.  There will be a short speaking program that will feature Chief Justice Barbara Madsen, WSBA President Patrick Palace, and past and current ATJ Board Chairs.   Appetizers will be served, along with a no-host bar.  This will be a great opportunity to meet major players in Washington’s social justice movement.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of one of the most significant trials in Washington legal history.  In 1962, state Rep. John Goldmark was the victim of a “red-baiting” attack that labeled him and his wife Sally Goldmark as “communist tools.”  The attack destroyed Goldmark’s political career, but he responded by suing his accusers for libel.  The trial drew national attention, vindicated the Goldmarks, and resulted in one of the largest libel awards in Washington history.  Almost immediately, however, the verdict was indirectly overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark decision inNew York Times v. Sullivan, limiting libel actions involving “political” speech.

This distinguished panel features Commissioner of Public Lands Peter Goldmark, son of plaintiff John Goldmark; former U.S. Senator Slade Gorton, who testified at the trial in support of John Goldmark; King County Superior Court Judge Judith Ramseyer, former law clerk to Judge William Dwyer, John Goldmark’s attorney at the trial; and Bob Ferguson, Attorney General of Washington.  Please join them to remember the Goldmark case and consider its legacy half a century later.

Penn State’s College of Education will host an interdisciplinary civil rights conference and related graduate student symposium in the summer of 2014. The primary goal of the conference is to address the inability of many students of color to access high-quality pre–K through higher education — still uneven for young people from historically marginalized groups and/or in many urban and increasingly in suburban settings. While many policy proposals have focused on access to education, there has been much less attention to racial inequality and segregation in access to P–20 education, even as the percentage of students of color is rapidly increasing. This conference seeks to explore what strategies have been effective in expanding educational opportunities for these students — and how we can implement additional best practices that will ensure equity in public education for the future.

The Conference will feature 30 new papers from leading social scientists, educators, and legal scholars. Lani Guinier will be the keynote speaker.

The Governor’s Office of Planning and Research (OPR) has an open position for one law clerk this summer, and multiple open positions in the fall. The law clerk will work with closely with OPR staff on a variety of projects related to water law, drought, the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), land use and the environment. Law clerk will have a hands-on opportunity to learn more about State government and policy development. The law clerk will gain skills and experience in policy research, local government outreach, interagency coordination, land use planning, and more.

OPR is a part of the Governor’s Office. State planning law establishes OPR as the comprehensive state planning agency. OPR is responsible for formulating long-range goals and policies for land use, population growth and distribution, urban expansion, development and resource protection. OPR is also responsible for writing and updating the CEQA and the General Plan Guidelines.

The Office of the General Counsel of the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is seeking to fill several advisory-attorney positions (GS 11/12/13/14) for its Ethics Division, which provides legal services involving federal criminal conflict of interest statutes, standards of ethical conduct regulations, financial disclosure requirements, procurement integrity provisions, lobbying rules, and Hatch Act political activity restrictions. Ethics Division attorneys work closely with the White House Counsel’s Office and the Office of Government Ethics (OGE) in clearing new Presidential appointees in the Senate confirmation process and also provide, in consultation with state bar authorities, guidance on legal ethics and professional responsibility issues. Washington State Office of Civil Legal Aid Seeking Children’s Representation Program Manager, Due 4/25

The Voting Rights Project of the ACLU has been an established and recognized national leader in the field of voting rights for more than 40 years. The Project also intervened on behalf of minority voters in Shelby County v. REAP is a collaborative externship program sponsored by the Washington Alliance for Equal Justice and all three Washington law schools – University of Washington, Seattle University, and Gonzaga University, as well as the University of Idaho. This unique public service opportunity, offered only in the fall term, allows a cohort of law students to contribute valuable legal education and assistance to migrant and seasonal farm workers in Central Washington, while learning together about the workplace justice issues facing this most vulnerable group of immigrant workers. Students will participate in outreach to farm workers living in labor camps throughout Central Washington, as well as carry out research and writing in support of labor rights litigation and immigration cases at one of the placement legal assistance organizations. In the past few years, students have worked on sexual harassment litigation, class actions involving guest worker programs, and affirmative immigration applications and DACA pro se clinics for young immigrants.

Northwest Justice Project’s Veterans Project seeks a summer law clerk in NJP’s Seattle Office.  The student law clerk will work with an Equal Justice Works Fellow providing civil legal aid to incarcerated veterans and veterans who are defendants in local veterans treatment courts.  Student law clerks will gain experience at Washington’s largest legal aid provider for low-income persons and develop skills in client interviewing, case management, and advocacy before the Department of Veterans Affairs and Washington Department of Social and Health Services.  Scheduling is flexible and a minimum commitment of ten 30 to 35 hour work weeks (or equivalent) is expected.  The position is unpaid.  Students may be eligible to seek summer funding under the AmeriCorps J.D. program or through PILA.  Students wishing to receive externship credit are also welcome.  1L’s and 2L’s can apply by sending a resume and 1-page cover letter to Leo Flor.  Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Promoting an expansive view of a legal aid lawyer’s role, community lawyering stresses the importance of thinking beyond litigation (while retaining litigation as a vital tool) in addressing the kinds of structural problems low-income communities face.

Community lawyers often prioritize community economic development, to help increase a community’s economic resources, such as housing; do community organizing as a vehicle for mobilizing communities to work on short, winnable, issue-oriented campaigns against specific targets with the longer-term goal of creating self-sustaining, community-based organizations capable of even greater changes; as well as engage in community building  to help increase the “social capital” within a community— identifying community resources, building new relationships among community members, and nurturing new leaders.

Speakers:
Angélica Cházaro is a Visiting Assistant Professor at UW School of Law who teaches Poverty Law and Critical Race Theory. She is a former staff attorney at the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project.

The speaker at this dinner will be Maia Bellon, Director of the Washington State Department of Ecology.

Maia previously served as program manager for Ecology’s Water Resources program, overseeing a staff of 130.  That program is charged with sustainably managing the state’s water resources, including the allocation of water and protection of water rights, instream flows and environmental functions.

Before joining Ecology, Maia served as an assistant attorney general with the Ecology Division of the Washington State Attorney General’s Office. She served as the lead attorney for the underground storage tank program and was Ecology’s lead advisor on mining and Model Toxics Control Act voluntary cleanup issues. She also served for two years as the lead attorney for Ecology’s Air Quality Program.

From 2000 to 2001, Maia served as the special assistant to the president for Civil Rights and Legal Affairs at The Evergreen State College. She is a graduate of The Evergreen State College and earned her law degree from Arizona State University.

The Washington Medical-Legal Partnership (MLP) is very pleased to be hosting the Medical-Legal Partnership Summit on April 10-11, 2014 at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel in downtown Seattle.  MLP’s mission is to build a better healthcare team that can identify, treat and prevent the health-harming legal needs of patients, clinics and populations. MLP helps people who have lost income or benefits; families who are struggling to maintain housing; and parents who can’t get the services their children need at school.  MLP trains medical providers and social workers to identify legal needs and intervene and advocates on systemic issues to change policies.  We integrate legal assistance into patient care and take a patient-to-policy approach.

The Summit will focus on medical-legal partnership in the era of health reform.  Themes will address medical-legal partnership as a mechanism for better healthcare delivery (related to prevention and outcomes), interprofessional education and population health change.
