PLS is seeking to hire a staff attorney with some immigration experience to provide representation to immigrants facing removal while in the custody of NYS’ Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. The staff attorney will provide a full range of legal services throughout the course of representation, including meeting with incarcerated clients, appearing at master calendar and merits hearings, appealing to the Bureau of Immigration Appeals (BIA), and providing other services related to incarceration. New Mexico Legal Aid has received a multi-state grant from AmeriCorps to host one-year AmeriCorps members to facilitate the medical-legal partnership (MLP) program serving American Indians and Alaskan Natives throughout the US. 14 members will be recruited throughout the US as follows: six attorneys in Alaska (Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, Kenai, Nome, Sitka), four attorneys in Oklahoma (Oklahoma City), and one attorney in each Arizona (Phoenix), Nebraska (Omaha), New Mexico (Albuquerque) and Utah (Montezuma Creek). The attorney selected will be housed at host site’s local office. AmeriCorps Member will ideally begin between November 1, 2016 and November 15, 2016 and in place for one year. Members may be eligible to continue their service for two additional one-year terms.

AmeriCorps member will offer trainings for health providers and comprehensive legal assistance for low-income patients at partnering hospital or health clinic serving the Navajo Nation. By focusing on cases that promote income growth, housing stability, and personal safety, the MLP uses legal advocacy as a tool to address social determinants of health. API Chaya engages communities to change societal conditions that enable domestic and sexual violence, human trafficking and all forms of oppression, especially violence against women and the most vulnerable in our society.

Legal Intern Duties include:

  • Supporting Advocates to help survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault with legal matters (immigration law, family law, protection orders and criminal law)
  • Accompanying program participants to Protection Order hearings
  • Working with local legal aid organizations to better serve survivors
  • Working in partnership with pro-bono attorneys assisting program participants
  • Possibility of community organizing/engagement opportunities for interns working more hours

Desired qualifications:

  • Bilingual, particularly in Asian, South Asian, or Pacific Island languages
  • Experience or familiarity with the issues we address and communities we serve as well as previous legal experience

The intern will work approximately 10-20 hours/week and will be required to complete extensive training on domestic violence and sexual assault before working with survivors.

Time Frame: A minimum of six months commitment works best for our organization.

This internship runs between September 2016 to June 2017. Position Overview:   PILPG’s Washington, D.C. office is currently hiring for Assistant Counsel, who will support PILPG’s work from PILPG’s headquarters in D.C.  Assistant Counsel will be responsible for working closely with Senior Counsel and Counsel to provide legal advice to PILPG’s clients, and help to manage the implementation of programs.  Depending on the nature of the work to which the Assistant Counsel is assigned, travel to PILPG’s field offices and other client locations may be required.

Qualifications for PILPG Assistant Counsel include:

  • A law degree;
  • A current bar membership;
  • One to three years previous professional experience, preferably in international law or a related field;
  • Previous program management experience preferred, does not necessarily need to be post-law school;
  • Ability to work independently, while also collaborate with a team;

The Center for Children & Youth Justice (CCYJ) is seeking to sponsor an applicant for a two-year Equal Justice Works (EJW) Fellowship, Skadden Fellowship, or other post-graduate legal fellowship focused on the replication/expansion of CCYJ’s Lawyers Fostering Independence program (LFI) from its current location in Seattle, WA to areas in need outside of King County. The fellowship would begin in the fall of 2017, is based in Seattle, WA, and will require travel.

Background

The Center for Children & Youth Justice was founded in 2006 with one mission: reform the foster care and juvenile justice systems to improve the lives of generations of children and youth. Our focus is large-scale, lasting systemic change. We carry out the research, pilot projects, policy advocacy, and grassroots engagements that make that change possible. No one else is doing this critical work. Our work is effective because we collaborate with all systems stakeholders including families and youth impacted by systems involvement.

LFI is a one-of-a-kind program that CCYJ began in 2008 with the aim of improving outcomes for current and former foster youth by providing civil legal aid to remove barriers that stand in the way of successful, independent adulthood. Every year in Washington over 500 young people age out of foster care and experience elevated rates of poverty, homelessness, and unemployment as compared to their peers from intact families. Current and former foster youth also struggle to overcome legal impediments, such as juvenile records, bad credit due to identity theft, domestic violence, and housing justice issues. Through the coordinated efforts of volunteer attorneys and partner service providers, LFI is able to help current and former foster youth reach for their future without being blocked by their past. Doing so enables LFI clients to secure stable housing, good employment, and desired education, i.e., the necessary pillars of a successful life. LFI currently operates in King County with the goal of replicating/expanding statewide on a county-by-county basis.

Job Description

CCYJ is eager to sponsor a law student graduating in 2017 or recent law school graduate (including judicial law clerks) who are interested in partnering with CCYJ to apply for an Equal Justice Works Fellowship to start in Fall 2017. The sponsored candidate would work with CCYJ to submit a project proposal to research, design, implement, and evaluate the sustainable replication/expansion of LFI into other Washington counties in collaboration with community partners. If selected, under the supervision of LFI’s Managing Attorney, the fellow will:

  • Provide direct service and representation to clients to further develop context for general legal issues faced by LFI clients and for a deep understanding of how LFI operates now and how it can best be replicated/expanded elsewhere
  • Research and identify county-based need/demand and existing support structures for LFI services in selected areas in Washington
  • Develop a manual to be used in aid of the replication/expansion of LFI
  • Coordinate and lead an advisory group in counties identified for replication/expansion
  • Build local partnerships with law firms, service providers, and community stakeholders to learn about local issues and ensure success of services implemented
  • Recruit, train, and provide support to volunteer attorneys
  • Provide educational workshops to service providers and community stakeholders to increase engagement and support for the services implemented
  • Lead and evaluate data collection and program evaluation
  • Provide advocacy and support for legislative efforts on laws supportive of LFI clients
  • Provide other support, as needed, to LFI’s Managing Attorney

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited law school by the time the fellowship begins
  • Apply for bar membership in Washington state within the first year of the fellowship, or before
  • Demonstrate commitment to serving the underserved
  • Be a motivated, ambitious, self-starter
  • Possess skills in oral and written communication
  • Fluent in English

Center for Food Safety (CFS) is a nonprofit public interest and environmental advocacy organization that works to protect human health and the environment by curbing the use of harmful food production technologies and by promoting organic and other forms of sustainable agriculture.

CFS is seeking motivated law clerks interested in doing meaningful litigation and policy work on behalf of the public and the environment. Specific issues include, for example, genetic engineering, pesticides, concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs, or factory farms), aquaculture, organics, and food labeling. Clerks’ responsibilities vary each year but typically include performing legal research, drafting pleadings, attending hearings, drafting comments and petitions to submit to administrative agencies, and supporting attorneys in litigation. Clerks are also expected to do minor administrative tasks as needed. Law clerks work closely with attorneys and staff, and are able to gain practical litigation and policy experience in a small nonprofit setting.

Applications for first-year law students will be accepted December 1, 2015, in accordance with NALP guidelines. The program is a full-time (32 hours per week), six-week minimum, summer internship program open to all first- or second-year diverse law students.

The mission of the Judicial Intern Opportunity Program is to provide opportunities to students who are members of racial and ethnic groups that are traditionally underrepresented in the profession. The program also provides opportunities to students with disabilities, students who are economically disadvantaged, and students who identify themselves as LGBT.

The Mahindra Humanities Center invites applications for one-year postdoctoral fellowships in connection with the Center’s Andrew W. Mellon Foundation seminar on the topic of violence and non-violence. The call to arms and the politics of non-violent resistance are often represented as polarities. There are, however, many gray areas that define the dialectical relationship between violence and non-violence. The Mellon seminar, in which the postdoctoral fellows play a central role, explores a different dimension of the interrelationship between violence and non-violence—as disciplinary formation, historical event, ideological or ethical discourse—each year.

Following on the themes of war (2014-15) and everyday violence (2015-16), the seminar will focus on slow violence in 2016-17.

We intend to focus on practices and processes of violence involved in large-scale historical and political transformations. The ongoing, incremental processes of slow violence may be manifested in the degradation of social and economic structures, the violation of cultural forms and practices, and the fraying of ethical and political systems. Slow violence endangers the security and sustainability of the quality of life.

  • Be available to travel occasionally around the state, and may spend some time in Olympia during the legislative session.
  • Work with teams of attorneys on complex litigation, including class actions.
  • Identify practices and laws that adversely affect the rights and diminish the benefits for low income populations.
  • Coordinate with other advocacy groups and legal service organizations and the private bar to identify opportunities and execute strategies to advance the law for low income populations.

The mission of the Peggy Browning Fund is to educate and inspire the next generation of advocates for workplace justice. Through fellowships, workers’ rights conferences, networking and other programs, we provide unique opportunities for law students to work for economic and social justice

Our core program is the Summer Fellowship Program, which is comprised of a 10-week fellowship during the summer months at pre-selected labor-related organizations around the country.  In 2015, we will support between 60 and 70 funded summer fellowships, plus one part-time funded School-Year Fellowship at the Chicago Newspaper Guild for 2015 – 2016.

The Summer Fellowship Program provides stipends to 1st and 2nd year law students who dedicate this time to advancing the cause of workers’ rights.  We routinely collaborate with 149 participating law schools and selected mentor organizations nationwide.

Summer Fellowship stipends will be a minimum of $5,000 per student for the ten-week employment period.  In many cases, mentor organizations will supplement the stipend.

The Employment Section provides labor and employment advice to all City of Seattle departments (for example the Fire Department, Seattle City Light, and the Parks Department) and it also represents City departments in labor arbitrations, in administrative hearings and in federal and state court. The legal issues within the Employment Section’s area of expertise include: wage and hour issues, disability accommodation, anti-discrimination laws, employee discipline, and collective bargaining issues. Externs would work directly with Assistant City Attorneys in the Employment Section, to provide legal research assistance, to draft briefs, motions and witness declarations, and to perform other functions according to case needs and the extern’s interests. In addition, externs would be provided with opportunities for client contact and for observation of depositions, hearings and/or court proceedings. National Veterans Legal Services Seeks Litigation Attorney, Deadline 3/1.

NVLSPThe National Veterans Legal Services Program (NVLSP) is a national nonprofit public interest law firm dedicated to assisting veterans, service members, and their families receive the federal benefits to which they are entitled.  To this end, NVLSP represents veterans and surviving family members before the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims (CAVC) and other federal courts, the Board of Veterans’ Appeals, and VA regional offices.  NVLSP often serves as amicus or lead counsel in impact litigation throughout the United States.  In addition, NVLSP trains hundreds of other lawyer and non-lawyer advocates in veterans/military law and publishes advocacy materials to assist these advocates in their representation of veterans, service members, and their families.  Among NVLSP’s advocacy publications is The Veterans Benefits Manual, a 1,900-page veterans law treatise published by LexisNexis.

The major responsibility of the Veterans Law Litigation Attorney is representing veterans and their families before the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims, an Article I appellate court.  This responsibility will entail conducting legal research, drafting legal briefs, and possibly conducting oral argument.  Other duties involve training and mentoring of veterans’ advocates and writing legal advocacy materials.

Qualifications: J.D.; excellent research and writing skills; and strong academic background.  Litigation, public interest, administrative law, or law school clinical experience would be helpful.  Experience in veterans law, although not required, is preferred.

The summer intern works under the general supervision of the Executive Director for Diversity Initiatives. Qualifications: The summer internship is restricted to currently enrolled law students in good academic standing. Job Description: In partnership with 178 member organizations in over 100 countries, the FIDH New York office is responsible for advocacy initiatives targeted at the UN Security Council, the UN General Assembly, and the Secretariat of the United Nations, as well as the U.S. government in Washington, DC.

FIDH-New York’s activities include:

• Developing advocacy strategies to protect and promote human rights in crisis situations (for example: Mali, Myanmar/Burma, Syria, & Haiti) and on thematic issues (for example: the protection of human rights while countering terrorism, fighting impunity for international crimes and human rights violations

• Bringing local human rights defenders (from Indonesia, Belarus, Afghanistan, etc.) to New York and Washington for advocacy meetings with senior UN and government officials

• Analyzing UN policies and programs and developing and presenting recommendations to strengthen the work of the UN in upholding human rights

Intern’s responsibilities:

Based on your background and expertise, you will be assigned several thematic and country portfolios for which you will be the lead researcher in the FIDH-NY intern team. For each of your portfolios you will be asked to:

• closely follow and keep FIDH informed of international news developments, as well as relevant decisions and statements by UN member states, UN representatives, and government officials around the world;
• participate in related meetings with diplomatic missions and UN officials, and provide short internal reports to international FIDH offices;
• help organize visits and advocacy meetings for human rights defenders coming to New York and Washington, DC to meet with government and UN officials;
• contribute to the development of advocacy strategies and campaigns.

You will work as part of the FIDH-NY intern team, contributing to research and advocacy on a variety of topics beyond those assigned to you.

Depending on your skills and interest level, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the work of FIDH through a special project to be determined by you and your supervisor. Previous interns have developed media strategies for advocacy campaigns, or have written research reports on topics such as the protection of human rights in the global fight against terrorism.

Qualifications:

– Ideal candidate will possess a good working knowledge of current affairs, international human rights laws and conventions, and international relations (preferably working toward an advanced degree in any of these areas)
– Familiarity with UN mechanisms and international human rights instruments strongly preferred
– Written and oral fluency in English is necessary. Fluency in another UN language (Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Chinese, and preferably French) is an asset
– Attention to detail and good written and oral communication skills are highly valued

Salary:  As a non-profit organization, we cannot offer remuneration for this position. However, an FIDH internship provides a unique opportunity to gain first-hand exposure to advocacy and policy development at the United Nations, to collaborate with several renowned NGOs and human rights defenders, to attend meetings and events at the UN, and to contribute to the promotion of human rights around the world.

CCR is a national not-for-profit legal, educational, and advocacy organization dedicated to advancing and protecting the rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Founded in 1966 by attorneys who represented civil rights movements in the South, CCR is committed to the creative use of law as a positive force for social change.  CCR’s legal internships are part of CCR’s Bertha Justice Institute (BJI), an innovative training institute for social justice law students and lawyers created in partnership with the Bertha Foundation.  The BJI supports existing and aspiring social justice lawyers through a range of programs including: post-graduate fellowships, the summer Ella Baker Program, fall/spring internships and externships, Continuing Legal Education (CLE) courses, regional conferences and national training institutes.

Interns will have the opportunity to work with CCR attorneys on a range of projects, particularly related to policing practices, prisoners’ rights, immigration, racial discrimination, and national security issues.  The intern will spend 10-20 hours per week between September and December 2014 assisting attorneys on projects. This position is also open to students seeking full-time semester-long externships.
