Spitzer Interns will work closely with NHeLP staff attorneys who are among the most experienced, knowledgeable, and respected health law advocates in the nation. NHeLP attorneys work collaboratively across offices and all engage in the primary work of the organization – providing high quality advice and support to state-based health lawyers, administration officials, and policy makers. Center for Food Safety Seeking Summer 2016 Law Clerk, Paid Position

Center for Food Safety (CFS) is a nonprofit public interest and environmental advocacy organization that works to protect human health and the environment by curbing the use of harmful food production technologies and by promoting organic and other forms of sustainable agriculture.

CFS is seeking motivated law clerks interested in doing meaningful litigation and policy work on behalf of the public and the environment. Specific issues include, for example, genetic engineering, pesticides, concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs, or factory farms), aquaculture, organics, and food labeling. Clerks’ responsibilities vary each year but typically include performing legal research, drafting pleadings, attending hearings, drafting comments and petitions to submit to administrative agencies, and supporting attorneys in litigation. Clerks are also expected to do minor administrative tasks as needed. Law clerks work closely with attorneys and staff, and are able to gain practical litigation and policy experience in a small nonprofit setting.

The American Bar Association Section of Litigation will begin accepting applications for its Summer 2016 Judicial Intern Opportunity Program on November 9. Applications for first-year law students will be accepted December 1, 2015, in accordance with NALP guidelines. The program is a full-time (32 hours per week), six-week minimum, summer internship program open to all first- or second-year diverse law students.

The mission of the Judicial Intern Opportunity Program is to provide opportunities to students who are members of racial and ethnic groups that are traditionally underrepresented in the profession. The program also provides opportunities to students with disabilities, students who are economically disadvantaged, and students who identify themselves as LGBT.

The Mahindra Humanities Center invites applications for one-year postdoctoral fellowships in connection with the Center’s Andrew W. Mellon Foundation seminar on the topic of violence and non-violence. The call to arms and the politics of non-violent resistance are often represented as polarities. There are, however, many gray areas that define the dialectical relationship between violence and non-violence. The Mellon seminar, in which the postdoctoral fellows play a central role, explores a different dimension of the interrelationship between violence and non-violence—as disciplinary formation, historical event, ideological or ethical discourse—each year.

Following on the themes of war (2014-15) and everyday violence (2015-16), the seminar will focus on slow violence in 2016-17.

We intend to focus on practices and processes of violence involved in large-scale historical and political transformations. The ongoing, incremental processes of slow violence may be manifested in the degradation of social and economic structures, the violation of cultural forms and practices, and the fraying of ethical and political systems. Slow violence endangers the security and sustainability of the quality of life.

Washington Defender Association (WDA) Immigration Project: WDA’s Immigration Project seeks two externs for Winter and Spring Quarters 2015 to research the immigration consequences of various convictions and work preparing publications and training programs for defense attorneys, prosecutors, and the court. WDA provides constitutionally mandated advice to attorneys across Washington on whether their non-citizen clients will face immigration consequences as a result of their convictions.  Students working in this rapidly evolving area must have taken immigration law and/or be taking criminal procedure (or have equivalent experience).  Students must work at the field placement for 16 – 20 hours/week. Regardless of how many externship credits students seek, students must also enroll in the two-credit immigration seminar (Legislation and the Formulation of Public Policy) offered by Professor Angelica Chazaro in Winter Quarter 2015. Professor Chazaro will be the faculty supervisor for this externship.

Northwest Immigrant Rights Project (NWIRP) Tacoma Office: NWIRP’s Tacoma office seeks two externs for Winter and Spring Quarters 2015 to assist in directly representing immigrant detainees in removal (deportation) proceedings. This may include appearing in immigration court hearings, preparing clients for court, preparing witnesses, drafting a number of legal briefs and making oral arguments in court. NWIRP provides legal representation to immigrants held at the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma, WA. Students must work at the field placement for 20 – 35 hours a week. Preference will be given to Spanish speakers and to students who are available more rather than fewer hours. Regardless of how many externship credits students seek, students must also enroll in the two-credit immigration seminar (Legislation and the Formulation of Public Policy) offered by Professor Angelica Chazaro in Winter Quarter 2015. Professor Chazaro will be the faculty supervisor for this ext! ernship.

B512 Legislation and the Formulation of Public Policy
This course will examine immigration laws and policies related to how removal (deportation) laws and policies are established and implemented, and including the emergence and role of social change movements. Topics will include the intersection of immigration and criminal law, border security, state and local enforcement, the root causes of unauthorized migration, and the challenges of immigration law reform. The course will cover both legal doctrine and legislative issues concerning immigration detention and enforcement.

TeamChild Seeking Juvenile Record Sealing Legal Intern, Paid Position, Due 12/5

The Juvenile Record Sealing Legal Intern is responsible for assisting young men and women with motions to seal their juvenile record. The Intern will be responsible for running two juvenile record sealing clinics in King County. The clinics occur one Wednesday and one Saturday a month, October-May and two or three summer clinics. The intern’s attendance at these clinics is mandatory. The Intern will be responsible for organizing outreach efforts to ensure attendance at the Clinic and coordinating the participation of attorney and student volunteers.

Following the clinics, the Intern will be responsible for the filing and processing of paperwork necessary to seal juvenile criminal history. This requires the intern to be present at the King County juvenile courthouse two Fridays a month. The Intern will also be responsible for publicizing the Juvenile Record Sealing Clinics in King County and responding to calls and emails seeking general information regarding the record sealing process. The intern will also be asked to gather information on current juvenile offenders.

A successful applicant will be a law student in good academic standing. The position requires someone who is self-motivated and has an excellent demeanor with clients and colleagues. This position is open to both work study and non work study qualified students. The time commitment is approximately 20-30 hours per month and the rate of pay is $18 an hour. The intern must be able to attend the sealing clinics (1st Wednesday of every month from 6-8 PM and 1 Saturday every month from 9:00-11:00 AM) and the King County Juvenile Court hearing (at least one morning a month from 8:30-11:30 AM). A car is useful but not necessary.

Accountability Counsel defends the environmental and human rights of communities around the world who are harmed by internationally financed development projects. We specialize in non-judicial accountability mechanisms established to receive community complaints. We accomplish our mission through: (1) assisting communities to use these mechanisms effectively and; (2) policy advocacy, ensuring that these complaint offices are accessible, transparent, and fair tools for justice.

Our Law Fellows will support Accountability Counsel’s collaboration with communities around the world in their complaints to accountability mechanisms, as well as policy work toward improvement of accountability mechanisms. Law Fellows will work on legal research assignments and fact memos, and will participate in meetings with community members, international institutions, and NGO colleagues. The Legal Department of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (“AFL‑CIO”) is offering a one‑year fellowship beginning in September 2015.  The fellowship offers an excellent opportunity for recent law school graduates to work with experienced union-side lawyers on a wide variety of issues.

The AFL‑CIO Fellow will work with lawyers in the AFL‑CIO Legal Department and with other union lawyers around the country on a wide range of activities.  The Fellow will assist experienced lawyers working on cases and regulatory matters that affect the labor movement and the rights of workers.  The AFL‑CIO’s litigation caseload includes cases in the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Courts of Appeals, the NLRB and a small number of state appellate suits.  In addition, the AFL‑CIO Legal Department frequently presents the views of the labor movement on federal regulatory initiatives affecting workers.  Whenever possible, the Fellow will be given the opportunity to participate in meetings with union lawyers and to attend oral arguments.  The AFL‑CIO Fellow will also participate in Lawyers Coordinating Committee activities, including preparation for attorney conferences, outreach to new labor lawyers and law students, and regular opportunities to attend LCC meetings and conferences.

The Snohomish County Public Defenders Association is seeking 2L Summer interns for 2015 Rule 9 positions. The Snohomish County Public Defenders Association represents indigent individuals in the Superior and District Courts of Snohomish County. Currently the office has a Felony unit, Misdemeanor unit, Civil Commitment unit, and a Predator unit. The positions will be in the Misdemeanor unit at the office. Each intern will be paired up with a supervising attorney who will assign tasks as needed.

After an initial training period, which will last approximately two weeks, the position will require frequent court appearances, meeting with clients, possible interviews at various correctional facilitates, motions practice, and any other task assigned by a supervising attorney. The position will likely require a significant amount of time in court. Only those interested in working with indigent people and who are interested in trial work should apply. Positions are unpaid. Externship credit is possible but will require the student to coordinate with the school. The ideal start time would be shortly after the school year ends and go to just before the next school session. There can be some flexibility as to start and end dates.

Many federal agencies hire new attorneys primarily (and sometimes solely) through an “Honors Attorney Program.”  These programs are also sometimes called federal fellowships and usually last about two years. 3Ls can typically apply in their summer between 2L and 3L year until around Labor Day depending on the federal agency. Each department/agency administers their program so there’s no centralized application process. Applicants need to research specific agencies directly and learn about their program guidelines, eligibility requirements and application procedures. There are many federal agencies that hire entry-level attorneys through this process. The agency/department (not surprisingly) hires the most attorneys is the US Department of Justice– but don’t limit your search there. There are plenty of other agencies that hire attorneys (most years) that can offer great opportunities to work for justice. Examples include but are not limited to: State Dept, CIA, EPA, FTC, FDIC, HUD, DOL, FCC, IRS and even the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Keep in mind that each agency announces their application period at different times so don’t despair if you don’t see updated info for 2014. Keep checking. Your top agency pick isn’t hiring this year? Consider applying through another agency to get your foot in the door and you might have a good shot as a lateral transfer. Remember, perseverance pays off!

The Michael F. Vaccaro Fellowship (which begins in the fall of 2014) is open to U.S. citizens with excellent academic credentials and a strong interest in an environmental career or the public sector, and who are:

  • 2013 and 2014 graduates from an accredited law school, or
  • current judicial clerks (one or two years out of law school), or
  • JAG attorneys completing their initial tour of duty following completion of law school.

A law school graduate who has been employed as an attorney, other than judicial clerks and JAG service, will not be considered.

The Michael F. Vaccaro Honors Attorney Fellowship provides a unique opportunity to practice law in a major governmental environmental organization, and to receive extensive training in and exposure to environmental law and policy work in the public sector. The Fellowship recipient will work in the Office of Regional Counsel on particular matters arising under the major federal environmental statutes (such as the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, Superfund, and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act) and other federal statutes relevant to EPA Region 3 operations (such as the Ethics in Government Act, the Civil Rights Act, and the Freedom of Information Act). These matters typically require the application of emerging law and policy to significant environmental issues in Region 3. The Fellowship will also include an opportunity to manage environmental enforcement cases.

Equal Justice Works and AmeriCorps have partnered together to provide the new Employment Opportunity Legal Corps (EOLC) Fellowship opportunity to remove legal barriers to employment for economically disadvantaged individuals across the nation. The EOLC Fellow working for CJDC will focus his or her efforts on providing legal assistance to persons with a legal barrier to employment due to their juvenile histories by focusing on expunging juvenile records and removing individuals from the sex offender registry when they are required to register due to juvenile adjudications. The fellow will assist in the creation of both practice standards for expungement and deregistration cases and indigency guidelines; marketing the expungement and deregistration program; participating in community education and direct pro bono assistance; and supervising interns, students, and pro bono attorneys who provide assistance in expungement and deregistration to clients. Throughout the fellowship the fellow will carry a caseload of expungement and/or deregistration cases and will directly assist clients in procuring employment.

The Mississippi Center for Justice seeks applicants for an Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Legal Fellow position to be funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service (administered by Equal Justice Works) and the Mississippi Center for Justice. Beginning between August and September, 2014, the fellow will work at the Center’s Jackson office on re-entry issues in order to remove legal barriers to employment for economically disadvantaged individuals. Based on Equal Justice Works/AmeriCorps guidelines, the term of service is two years, pending renewal after the first year.

The fellowship will focus on getting former prisoners back to work, providing assistance in expungement, license renewal, and assistance with managing financial challenges such as child support obligations and debt. Court cases will be filed for expungement of records and modification of outstanding child support obligations that have remained unpaid while a responsible parent was incarcerated. The Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Legal Fellow will assist in removing legal barriers to employment by getting professional licenses reinstated and assisting former inmates in getting driver’s licenses. In addition, the Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Legal Fellow will work with community organizations such as the City of Jackson’s Fresh Start Program to provide employment opportunities for clients. The Fellow will develop leadership and management skills as well as a broad network of partnerships. S/he will work in partnership with law students and pro bono attorneys to assist clients in gaining expungements. S/he will manage outreach, legal clinics, law student interns, teams of volunteer law students, and pro bono attorneys.

The legal fellow may be based in NELP’s offices in New York City, Oakland, or Seattle. This position offers an opportunity to join a committed and high-impact team at NELP that, in partnership with national and grassroots advocates, is working to improve economic opportunity and security for low-wage, immigrant, and unemployed workers.

NELP will work with the legal fellow to develop a project that supports federal, state and local policy and organizing campaigns seeking to promote good jobs and fair access to employment for our nation’s low-wage and immigrant workforce. OASThe Human Rights Specialist will work as part of the team which supports the work of the Rapporteurship on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.  In this capacity, he or she will work under the general supervision of the Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), either directly or through the corresponding Specialist.  In this sense, the Human Rights Specialist will be responsible for the following duties:

Sample Duties Include:

  • Advice on the presentation of contentious cases and requests for advisory opinions before the Inter-American Court.
  • Draft case reports setting forth specialized analysis, conclusions and recommendations for Commission consideration.
  • Contribute to the implementation of the individual petition system governed by the inter-American human rights instruments, preparing specialized opinions regarding complaints received against Member States at the study, admissibility, and merits stages.  Prepare specialized opinions related to requests for precautionary measures.
  • Advise petitioners and state representatives on the application of petition procedures and other matters related to human rights. Provide technical advisory services for other organs or agencies of the Organization, in relation to drafting and implementation of juridical international instruments in the field of human rights.
  • Monitor the overall situation of human rights of indigenous peoples in the Americas by contacting and maintaining sources, collecting and reviewing information, coordinating general hearings before the Commission, and consulting with the Commission Rapporteur.  Prepare special reports on the situation of human rights of indigenous peoples and on selected human rights issues. This requires gathering and evaluating data from a wide range of sources, legal research and analysis, editing and translating documents, and the drafting of reports for publication, pursuant to Commission approval.

The Kenneth L. Schubert Jr. Diversity Fellowship will be offered to a second year law student in honor of Ken Schubert Jr., one of our founders, a UW Law School Alumni, and a champion of diversity in the profession. The Schubert Diversity Fellow will receive a paid l 0-week Summer Associate position at the firm between their second and third year of law school. After successful completion of the Summer Associate position and upon acceptance by the Fellow of an offered attorney position with the firm , the Schubert Diversity Fellow will receive an additional $15 ,000 ($7,500 payable at the start of the first semester of the third year, and another $7,500 payable at the start of the second semester of the third year upon showing of continued outstanding academic performance).

Eligibility: The Kenneth L. Schubert Jr. Diversity Fellowship is open to all second year law students (including, but not limited to, persons of diverse social, cultural, ethnic, racial, GLBT groups and those with physical limitations) who are committed to diversity and inclusion in the profession and who will contribute meaningfully to the diversity of the Firm. Applicants must be enrolled full-time and in good standing at the University of Washington School of Law. We are pleased to consider candidates who:
