The AGO’s Sexually Violent Predator (SVP) Unit of the Criminal Justice Division has an opening for an attorney interested in the cases involving the civil commitment of sexually violent predators state wide under RCW 71.09. We are looking for a trial litigator with significant trial litigation experience and exceptional legal writing and oral advocacy skills.

The attorney hired for this position will work with attorneys, paralegals, legal assistants and an investigator within the AGO. SVP caseloads consists of civil commitment and post commitment trial work in the superior courts, as well as appeals that arise from these cases in both state and federal courts. SVP cases are civil in nature and the trial litigation duties will include conducting pretrial discovery under the civil rules, including depositions, interrogatories and requests for production.  Duties also include litigating SVP cases through all phases of the SVP proceedings, including filing decisions, initial commitment trials (both bench and jury), post commitment proceedings (including bench and jury release trials), and some appeals.   The work of the SVP Unit is demanding, yet very rewarding, and the selected candidate will join a staff of incredibly experienced and fun attorneys and support staff.

The Campaign Legal Center (CLC), a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization in Washington, DC, is seeking law students to serve as summer law clerks in 2017. CLC’s mission is to improve our democracy and protect the fundamental right of all Americans to participate in the political process. To that end, CLC litigates impact cases on voting rights, partisan gerrymandering, and campaign finance protections. CLC also runs a state and local program to help draft and defend democracy reforms at the local level. CLC oversees the Voting Rights Institute. Now more than ever, CLC’s work protecting our democracy is critical.

 

Summer law clerks at CLC have the opportunity to work across all of CLC’s issue area. Summer law clerks are tasked with advanced legal work including writing legal pleadings and briefs, researching complex issues for pending and potential lawsuits, investigating claims of voting discrimination, drafting regulatory language, and writing complaints to the Federal Election Commission. CLC anticipates that 2017 law clerks will assist with pending litigation attacking felon disfranchisement, partisan gerrymandering, and FEC inaction to enforce our campaign finance laws. The Educational Opportunities Section enforces federal laws that protect students from discrimination. The Section is responsible for enforcing, among other statutes, Title IV of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, and religion in public schools and institutions of higher learning; the Equal Educational Opportunities Act of 1974 which, among other things, requires states and school districts to provide English Language Learner students with appropriate services to overcome language barriers; and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which prohibits discrimination based on disability. The Section also plays a significant role in enforcing Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (prohibiting discrimination on the basis of race, color, and national origin by recipients of federal funds); Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 (prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex by recipients of federal funds); and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
The Section enforces these statutes and court decisions in a diverse array of cases involving elementary and secondary schools and institutions of higher education. The Section may intervene in private suits alleging violations of education-related anti-discrimination statutes and the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution.

This event will provide an introduction to the defenders; Seattle’s front-line soldiers in the battle for criminal justice reform. Besides providing legal representation to indigent clients in several practice areas, the King County Department of Public Defense also works to address racial disproportionality in the criminal justice system, the collateral consequences of justice involvement, and other structural issues that undermine the rights of the criminally accused. DPD representatives will speak to their own experience in criminal law, as well as their role in justice reform movements currently underway here in King County.

Panelists include: La Mer Kyle-Griffiths is the Training Director for the King County Department of Public Defense in Seattle, WA. Before that, she practiced for over 15 years as a public defender in both Kentucky and Massachusetts. She has tried juvenile, adult and a death penalty case as well as arguing two cases to the Kentucky Supreme court; Amy Parker has been serving as a public defense attorney in King County for more than a decade, and recently served as the interim supervisor for the Associated Counsel for the Accused at Seattle Municipal Court. She is a leader in the public defense community and a respected litigator who has brought multiple felony cases to trial; Sade Smith grew up in Pullman, Washington and graduated from the University of Illinois College of Law in 2011. Sade entered public defense shortly after graduation as a public defender in Burlington and Mount Vernon. Since 2014 she has been on case load with the Northwest Defenders Division of the King County Department of Public Defense.

The Washington Vets Wills Clinic (“Clinic”) has been providing pro bono legal advice and free estate planning documents to eligible Veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces, National Guard and Reserve members, and their spouses for three years.  Founded in 2012, the Clinic is a coalition of philanthropic, educational, civic, and veterans’ service organizations dedicated to giving back to former members of the military. The Clinic assists Veterans while providing pro bono opportunities to the legal community and experiential learning through service to law students.

The second annual North Sound Clinic will be hosted in Seattle on 24 October 2015, at the University of Washington School of Law.  The Clinic’s goal is to ensure that every attending Veteran and spouse meets with a lawyer and leaves the Clinic with an executed and notarized will, power of attorney, and health care directive.

To participate in the Clinic, Veterans apply online and the information requested in the application is used to create unique estate planning documents for each Veteran client. Not all that apply are accepted, and the Clinic reserves the right to determine rules of use and participation.  Once the Veteran and spouse are accepted, Clinic staff assigns them an appointment time.  On the day of the Clinic, Veterans check in, enjoy refreshments, and visit with the clinic partners and other veterans until their appointment time.

At their appointment time, the assigned law clerk greets the Veteran and their spouse, and accompanies them to a room where they meet in confidence with an assigned lawyer.  The lawyer interviews, counsels, and advises the clients while the law clerks draft any changes to the packet of pre-filled estate planning documents.  The lawyer reviews these with the clients and, once final copies are printed, guides them through execution of the documents.  Volunteer notaries public assist with formally executing the documents.  Finally, the law clerk escorts the clients back to the lobby.

A free Continuing Legal Education training class precedes each Clinic event, to teach lawyers and supporting volunteers the estate planning process, and to acquaint them with the basic documents used at the Clinic.

As one second-year law student volunteer observed, “As I saw the Vets leave after their sessions, they left holding hands with their spouses, smiling and thanking volunteers.  It was apparent that the services we provided had both legal and emotional benefits for the clients.”  Those legal and emotional benefits extend to the students, who find it very gratifying to serve the Veterans population, while learning about estate planning from practicing attorneys.

Law students can volunteer in two ways. The first is to volunteer for the day of the clinic, for a morning shift, afternoon shift, or all day (both) shift. The day of shifts will involve a combination of observing attorneys advising veteran clients, as well as general all-around and administrative tasks. The Clinic will work diligently to provide a combination of exposure to legal work as well as general purpose work. The second way to volunteer is for making confirmation calls to the veteran clients of their appointments, which will occur on Sat Oct 17th. This option allows for an hour or two of service, though the confirmations are more administrative than legal work. ABA Announces Mini-Grants for Projects Expanding Pro Bono Attorneys Representation of Unaccompanied Minor Immigrants

ABA Working Group on Unaccompanied Minor Immigrants is pleased to announce the availability of mini-grants to legal assistance providers engaging pro bono attorneys to represent unaccompanied minor immigrants. The mini-grants are intended to provide initial financial support for innovative and sustainable pro bono models of legal representation of unaccompanied minor immigrants.

Equal Justice Works Career Fair & Conference – Last week for interview applications!

The Equal Justice Works annual Conference and Career Fair is the largest national public interest legal career fair in the country.  More than 1,200 students from 165 law schools attend for two days of interviews, workshops, networking and other career opportunities.  More than 140 public interest employers conduct interviews for internship and full-time positions and meet with students in informal “table talk” settings to discuss public interest legal opportunities.  The Conference and Career Fair also features workshops on various public interest careers and job search advice, resume and cover letter review, mock interviews, and more. Students and recent graduates can apply for interviews through September 14 and may register to attend informal table talk networking and workshop sessions through October 9. We are asking organizations in all sectors to please go to our survey to share your ideas on how to increase equity in King County.  Let us know what issues we should collectively tackle, what’s working to increase equity, and what are emerging opportunities. We also want your ideas about how we can collectively partner to advance equity in our region.

Licensed Legal Intern.  DPD is renowned nationally for its excellent legal representation to indigent clients in King County. Governed by a voter-approved amendment to the County Charter that made DPD a permanent, independent department within county government, the Department of Public Defense is overseen by a chief Public Defender with support and guidance from an advisory
board comprised of regional leaders in public defense.

DPD provides legal representation to indigent clients in several practice areas, including felonies, misdemeanors, juvenile offenders, dependencies, involuntary commitment, civil commitment of sexually violent predators, and contempt of court. The Department of Public Defense (DPD) is known nationally for its excellent legal representation of indigent clients in King County.  DPD provides legal representation to indigent clients in several practice areas, including felonies, misdemeanors, juvenile offenders, dependencies, involuntary commitment, civil commitment of sexually violent predators, and contempt of court.

DPD is looking for a Deputy Director who will assist the Director in leading this dynamic department. NWIRP’s Seattle Office services low-income immigrants and refugees in Western Washington. The office provides direct legal representation, referrals to pro bono attorneys, pro se assistance, and workshops on immigration matters ranging from asylum, citizenship, family petitions, and protections for immigrant children and victims of crimes.

The internship is open to first, second, and third year law students. Applicants should have excellent written and oral communication skills, an interest in immigration law, an ability to work in a diverse and fast-paced work environment, and a commitment to advancing and defending the legal rights of low-income immigrants and refugees. Applicants proficient in Spanish are strongly preferred. The internship is unpaid, but NWIRP will work with applicants to secure outside funding or academic credit.

This internship will provide the successful candidate with experience in the day-to day operations of a dynamic in-house federal policy team, including legislative analysis and drafting, coalition advocacy, and translating legal and legislative language into persuasive policy documents.

The internship is part-time, and will begin in September 2015 and end in November 2015. The program is focused on the areas of Family, Housing and Consumer law.

Law students serving as MMP volunteer interns will interview potential clients by telephone to collect information and evaluate their cases. Qualifying cases will be referred by the MMP interns to participating attorneys who have agreed to represent Moderate Means Program clients for a reduced fee. MMP interns will be expected to commit to a minimum of five hours a week for the duration of spring quarter and this summer (one hour is a weekly staff meeting).

The Employees’ Compensation appeals Board (ECAB), a United States Department of Labor appellate adjudicatory board, is seeking to hire a Law Clerk with a projected start date in May 2014. 

The ECAB, located at the Frances Perkins Building in Washington, D.C., hears appeals taken from determinations and awards under the Federal Employees’ Compensation Act (FECA) with respect to claims of federal employees injured in the course of their employment.  The decisions of the Board are made in accordance with its statutory mandate, based on a thorough review of the case record as compiled by the Office of Workers’ Compensation Programs (OWCP).  The ECAB has final ­authority to determine benefits payable with respect to the disability or death of federal employees injured in the scope of their employment.  There is no further administrative or judicial appeal of ECAB decisions.

The Law Clerk position is a two-year appointment at the GS-11, Step 1 level. The primary responsibilities of the Law Clerk is to review and analyze case records and arguments, conduct legal research, draft decisions and orders, and responses to motions. Small Olympia firm dedicated exclusively to appellate public defense is looking for a law student to help with research and writing.  We are simultaneously laid-back and passionate about doing an awesome job for our clients.  Extern will research issues and draft arguments for specific cases.  Extern will also research issues affecting the criminal justice system as a whole.  Extern will learn about appellate practice, legal writing, and issue-spotting.  Excellent experience for someone interested in either appellate or trial-level indigent defense.

We’re flexible about the number of hours per week and whether the extern works from our office, remotely, or a combination of the two.

Meyer Glitzenstein & Crystal – a public interest law firm in the nation’s capital focused on federal impact litigation in the fields of environmental protection, public lands and natural resource conservation, biodiversity and animal law, and open government – is now accepting applications for Law Clerks for the fall 2014 semester.  Law Clerks assist with all aspects of litigation.  Law clerks may be 2L, 3L, or LLM students, or may be recent law school graduates looking for a temporary clerkship.

Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills are required. Law Clerks must be prepared to work in our office in Washington, DC. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated interest in environmental and/or animal law.

Law Clerks typically arrange for class credit or public interest funding.  Those Law Clerks without funding will be compensated on a public interest pay scale commensurate with the nature of our practice.

Externs and volunteer law clerks to this division may have the opportunity to conduct legal research, draft client advice memoranda, participate in client meetings, attend court proceedings when available, draft or revise contracts, and attend client presentations.
