Eastside Legal Assistance Program Seeking Family Law Intern, Due 12/22

The Eastside Legal Assistance Program (“ELAP”) is looking for a law student to intern in our Domestic Violence Legal Program (“DVLP”) for the Winter Quarter 2016.

ELAP is a non-profit organization that provides no-cost civil legal services to survivors of domestic violence, including related family law issues (such as custody, parenting plans, spousal support, etc.), throughout King County, Washington, and to low-income residents of East and Northeast King County.  The intern will work with staff attorneys in the representation of clients, including providing assistance to draft pleadings and to interview clients, as well as to research points of law.  By the conclusion of the internship, it is expected that the intern will craft a legal memorandum that can be used as a writing sample.

This position will provide experience in practical legal skills such as client interviewing, legal issue spotting, case development, and working with low-income clients.  In addition, the intern will learn substantive and procedural aspects to family law practice, with an emphasis on representing domestic violence survivors. This position is unpaid but can be sponsored for academic credit if available through the student’s school.

This interdisciplinary studio will document the current state of bicycle connectivity in and
around Sea-Tac International Airport, and the status of plans for bicycle routes and services in surrounding jurisdictions and at the Port of Seattle. We will identify gaps and opportunities in plans and funding to reach more integrated bicycle connectivity with the airport. We will also explore issues and opportunities for inter-jurisdictional cooperation and conclude with a plan for the next phase for making Sea-Tac airport and its surroundings more bicycle friendly.

This studio builds on the work of a 2013 URBDP studio, which outlined actions the Port could take to make the airport more bicycle friendly. Many of these recommendations have been implemented. But many remain to be addressed.

Rising Rates Pose Challenge to Health Law

Many people signing up for 2016 health policies under the Affordable Care Act face higher premiums, fewer doctors and skimpier coverage, which threatens the appeal of the program for the healthy customers it needs.

Insurers have raised premiums steeply for the most popular plans at the same time they have boosted out-of-pocket costs such as deductibles, copays and coinsurance in many of their offerings. The companies attribute the moves in part to the high cost of some customers they are gaining under the law, which doesn’t allow them to bar clients with existing health conditions.

Honduran 2001 Murder Case Filed in Human Rights Court

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) filed the case of a Honduran man, murdered in 2001 as a congressional candidate, to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights for investigation on Tuesday.

Angel Pacheco Leon was murdered on Nov. 23, 2001 when he was a candidate for the Honduran National Congress, but the case has long been met with impunity.

Somalia: senior UN official calls for global support to improve human rights situation

While noting significant improvement in several sectors in long-troubled Somalia, a senior United Nations official today warned that the country’s progress is “at risk” without increased support from international partners to ensure the promotion and protection of human rights.

“Despite persisting challenges there is a significant improvement in the security situation in Somalia,” UN Assistant Secretary-General for human rights Ivan Šimonović told reporters in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, at the end of a five-day visit to the country.

Mr. Šimonović also observed that meaningful progress has been made by Somalia in its operations against Al Shabaab militia, in the implementation of the Human Rights Road Map, in reforming the justice and security sectors, in the State-building process and the consultations on an electoral model for 2016.

The Office of Immigration Litigation (OIL) coordinates Federal immigration litigation nationwide, and has both an appellate and a district court section. OIL Appellate defends the administrative decisions of the Board of Immigration Appeals, involving removal orders and denials of applications for relief before the Federal Courts of Appeals. OIL Appellate attorneys handle removal cases in the Courts of Appeals, and support the Office of the Solicitor General’s immigration litigation efforts in the United States Supreme Court. OIL Appellate provides advice and counsel to United States Attorneys’ offices prosecuting criminal immigration issues that overlap with the office’s civil litigation. OIL Appellate provides support and counsel to all federal agencies involved in the admission, regulation, and removal of aliens under our immigration and nationality statutes, as well as related areas of border enforcement and national security, and participates in public outreach activities, including training, conferences, and publications. OIL Appellate has approximately 260 attorneys and 100 support staff and handles approximately thirty percent of the Civil Division’s caseload.

Students will be assigned to one of OIL’s litigation teams where they will: draft appellate briefs in asylum and cancellation of removal cases and dispositive motions; write case summaries for weekly litigation reports; attend “First Cuts” meetings; and conduct legal research and prepare memoranda.

The Attorney General’s Indian Country Fellowship, Application Opens 7/31, Deadline 9/1

The Attorney General’s Indian Country Fellowship is designed to create a new pipeline of legal talent with expertise and deep experience in federal Indian law, tribal law, and Indian Country issues that can be deployed in creative ways to build tribal capacity, combat violent crime, and bolster public safety in Indian County jurisdictions.

Each Indian Country Fellowship position offers a 36-month appointment that may be extended or converted to a permanent position.  Fellows will generally be assigned to a U.S. Attorney’s Office (USAO) with significant Indian Country work, but may occasionally be assigned to a Main Justice Component with significant equities in Indian Country matters and law.  Fellowship appointments may, at the hiring component’s discretion, be extended or converted to permanent positions without further competition. This year’s Indian Country Fellowship will offer placement only in USAOs.  Candidates will interview with a joint panel of attorneys from the Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys (EOUSA) and USAOs.  Candidates who receive an offer of employment will be able to select their assignment preferences from the list of participating Districts.  Actual placement will be mutually agreed upon by the Fellow and the District.  In addition to the joint EOUSA/USAO selections, individual USAOs may offer additional Indian County Fellowship positions at their discretion, with hiring conducted according to their regular procedures.

The Office for Civil Rights (OCR) conducts public education, outreach, complaint investigation and resolution, and other compliance activities to ensure that people living in the United States have equal access to health care in all HHS-funded programs without facing unlawful discrimination or impermissible disclosure or use of protected health information.

OCR enforces Federal laws that prohibit discrimination by health care and human service providers that receive funds from DHHS. Such laws include Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Age Discrimination Act of 1975, the Community Service Assurance Provisions of the Hill-Burton Act, and the HIPAA Privacy Rule.

The Paul M. Dodyk Fellowship for Economic Justice has been established by generous donors to the National Center for Law and Economic Justice in honor of Paul M. Dodyk, past Chair of NCLEJ and a great champion of using the law to promote economic justice and fair and dignified treatment for everyone in our society, regardless of their means. The Fellowship is designed to foster the next generation of lawyers working for economic justice while enhancing NCLEJ’s capacity to serve those who have the least in our society.

For this cycle we are seeking applications from candidates who bring considerable experience in addressing issues confronting low wage workers, such as wage theft, equal pay for low-income women, and fair pay for low-income immigrant communities.

We seek energetic, motivated candidates with a record of commitment to social justice work with a strong component addressing issues confronting low wage workers, experience in developing and implementing projects, excellent writing, legal research and communication skills, and leadership potential.

Candidates for the Dodyk Fellowship should be at a relatively early stage of their legal careers – preferably those with up to four years of practice in the public or private sector, including law clerks and current or former Skadden, Equal Justice Works, or other Fellows. While preference will be given to candidates with one to four years of relevant experience after law school, third year students with extensive experience working with low wage worker issues or labor organizing may be considered. Applicants not yet admitted to the bar should be prepared to satisfy bar admission requirements.

The Fellow will work directly and collaborate with the OCA Chapters through a series of turn-key projects. The ultimate objective of this program is to create a movement of APAs that embrace the vision of robust civic engagement that fosters a strong democratic society for generations to come.

Wade (1973).

The Center seeks an Advocacy Adviser for Global Advocacy who will support the Global Advocacy Team in the Global Legal Program and will report to the Director of Global Advocacy.

Pro-Bono Summer Opportunities on Long Island: Hurricane Sandy Legal Assistance Work

Hurricane Sandy struck Long Island in October 2012 devastating the lives of thousands of residents.
Thanks to a generous grant by the Rausch Foundation, Touro Law Center was able to set up TLC-HEART
(Hurricane Emergency Assistance and Referral Team) which enabled the school to provide assistance in
the immediate aftermath of the storm. At that time pro-bono opportunities involved direct client contacts,
performing intakes, and advising on where to obtain immediate survival assistance relating to food and shelter.
Now the work has evolved to researching and preparing for litigating cases in federal court on flood insurance
claims and researching and preparing policy recommendations to advocate for better disaster management
policy and procedures in case of future natural or man-made disasters. Touro Law Center’s continued work
in the area of disaster related legal assistance is now made possible by a grant from Montana Legal Services
Association which sponsors a Volunteer Sandy Assistance at Touro Law Center for a period of one year

The Office of Chair Jacqueline A. Berrien is currently seeking interns for Fall 2014, Winter/Spring 2015, and Summer 2015.

The Office of the Chair (OCH), headquartered in Washington, DC, assists the Chair in fulfilling her responsibilities as Chair of the Commission and administrative head of the agency.  As one of five commissioners appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate, the Chair votes on all matters that come before the Commission, including policy issues, litigation recommendations, federal sector appellate cases, amicus briefs, subpoena determinations and contracts; issues Commissioner’s charges of discrimination, where appropriate; and performs such other functions as may be authorized by law, regulation, or order.  The Chair is the official spokesperson for the Commission and is responsible for the development and implementation of Commission policies, procedures, and programs.   The Chair also handles all operational aspects of the Commission, including managing Executive and Legislative branch relationships, the budget, personnel, and EEOC’s headquarters and 53 field offices.

OCH is currently looking for 2L, 3L or LLM law student interns for Fall 2014, Winter/Spring 2015, and Summer 2015.  Successful applicants will possess strong legal research, analysis and writing skills and have a demonstrated interest in civil rights issues, employment law, or public interest law.  Interns will be supervised by an attorney and will have opportunities to produce a legal writing work-product.
