The Washington Vets Wills Clinic (“Clinic”) has been providing pro bono legal advice and free estate planning documents to eligible Veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces, National Guard and Reserve members, and their spouses for three years. Founded in 2012, the Clinic is a coalition of philanthropic, educational, civic, and veterans’ service organizations dedicated to giving back to former members of the military. The Clinic assists Veterans while providing pro bono opportunities to the legal community and experiential learning through service to law students.

The first North Sound Clinic will be hosted in Seattle on October 24, 2015, by the University of Washington School of Law. The Clinic’s goal is to ensure that every attending Veteran and spouse meets with a lawyer and leaves the Clinic with an executed and notarized will, power of attorney, and health care directive.

To participate in the Clinic, Veterans apply online and the information requested in the application is used to create unique estate planning documents for each Veteran client. Not all that apply are accepted, and the Clinic reserves the right to determine rules of use and participation. Once the Veteran and spouse are accepted, Clinic staff assigns them an appointment time. On the day of the Clinic, Veterans register, enjoy refreshments, and visit with the partners and each other until their appointment time.

At their appointment time, the assigned law clerk greets the Veteran and their spouse, and accompanies them to a room where they meet in confidence with an assigned lawyer. The lawyer interviews, counsels, and advises the clients while the law clerks draft any changes to the packet of pre-filled estate planning documents. The lawyer reviews these with the clients and, once final copies are printed, guides them through execution of the documents. Volunteer notaries public assist with formally executing the documents. Finally, the law clerk escorts the clients back to the lobby.

A free Continuing Legal Education training class precedes each Clinic event, to teach lawyers and supporting volunteers the estate planning process, and to acquaint them with the basic documents used at the Clinic.

As one second-year law student volunteer observed, “As I saw the Vets leave after their sessions, they left holding hands with their spouses, smiling and thanking volunteers. It was apparent that the services we provided had both legal and emotional benefits for the clients.” Those legal and emotional benefits extend to the students, who find it very gratifying to serve the Veterans population, while learning about estate planning from practicing attorneys.

Law Student Role: Law students can volunteer in two ways. The first is to volunteer for the day of the clinic, for a morning shift, afternoon shift, or all day (both) shift. The day of shifts will involve a combination of observing attorneys advising veteran clients, as well as general all-around and administrative tasks. The Clinic will work diligently to provide a combination of exposure to legal work as well as general purpose work. The second way to volunteer is for making confirmation calls to the veteran clients of their appointments, which will be decided. This option allows for an hour or two of service, though the confirmations are more administrative than legal work. Please volunteer through the online volunteer form.

The attorney must:

  • Be available to travel occasionally around the state, and may spend some time in Olympia during the legislative session.
  • Work with teams of attorneys on complex litigation, including class actions.
  • Identify practices and laws that adversely affect the rights and diminish the benefits for low income populations.
  • Coordinate with other advocacy groups and legal service organizations and the private bar to identify opportunities and execute strategies to advance the law for low income populations.

Peggy Browning Fund

The mission of the Peggy Browning Fund is to educate and inspire the next generation of advocates for workplace justice. Through fellowships, workers’ rights conferences, networking and other programs, we provide unique opportunities for law students to work for economic and social justice

Our core program is the Summer Fellowship Program, which is comprised of a 10-week fellowship during the summer months at pre-selected labor-related organizations around the country.  In 2015, we will support between 60 and 70 funded summer fellowships, plus one part-time funded School-Year Fellowship at the Chicago Newspaper Guild for 2015 – 2016.

The Summer Fellowship Program provides stipends to 1st and 2nd year law students who dedicate this time to advancing the cause of workers’ rights.  We routinely collaborate with 149 participating law schools and selected mentor organizations nationwide.

Summer Fellowship stipends will be a minimum of $5,000 per student for the ten-week employment period.  In many cases, mentor organizations will supplement the stipend.

Seattle City Attorney Seeks Intern/Externs for Employment Law Section of Civil Division, Deadline 3/4

City of Seattle LogoThe Employment Section in the Civil Division of the Seattle City Attorney’s Office has externship opportunities available throughout the year for 2L and 3L law students, and also for 1L students during the summer after their first year. The Employment Section provides labor and employment advice to all City of Seattle departments (for example the Fire Department, Seattle City Light, and the Parks Department) and it also represents City departments in labor arbitrations, in administrative hearings and in federal and state court. The legal issues within the Employment Section’s area of expertise include: wage and hour issues, disability accommodation, anti-discrimination laws, employee discipline, and collective bargaining issues. Externs would work directly with Assistant City Attorneys in the Employment Section, to provide legal research assistance, to draft briefs, motions and witness declarations, and to perform other functions according to case needs and the extern’s interests. In addition, externs would be provided with opportunities for client contact and for observation of depositions, hearings and/or court proceedings. The externship provides the opportunity to work closely with an enthusiastic and experienced group of labor and employment attorneys in a public sector environment, and so would be a good fit for students interested in labor and employment law and/or public sector work.

National Veterans Legal Services Seeks Litigation Attorney, Deadline 3/1.

NVLSPThe National Veterans Legal Services Program (NVLSP) is a national nonprofit public interest law firm dedicated to assisting veterans, service members, and their families receive the federal benefits to which they are entitled.  To this end, NVLSP represents veterans and surviving family members before the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims (CAVC) and other federal courts, the Board of Veterans’ Appeals, and VA regional offices.  NVLSP often serves as amicus or lead counsel in impact litigation throughout the United States.  In addition, NVLSP trains hundreds of other lawyer and non-lawyer advocates in veterans/military law and publishes advocacy materials to assist these advocates in their representation of veterans, service members, and their families.  Among NVLSP’s advocacy publications is The Veterans Benefits Manual, a 1,900-page veterans law treatise published by LexisNexis.

The major responsibility of the Veterans Law Litigation Attorney is representing veterans and their families before the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims, an Article I appellate court.  This responsibility will entail conducting legal research, drafting legal briefs, and possibly conducting oral argument.  Other duties involve training and mentoring of veterans’ advocates and writing legal advocacy materials.

Qualifications: J.D.; excellent research and writing skills; and strong academic background.  Litigation, public interest, administrative law, or law school clinical experience would be helpful.  Experience in veterans law, although not required, is preferred.

Applications are being accepted for a paid summer internship with the Diversity Initiatives staff at the Law School Admission Council (LSAC). The summer intern works under the general supervision of the Executive Director for Diversity Initiatives. The intern will assist office staff with LSAC’s diversity initiatives, including but not limited to, the DiscoverLaw.org website, DiscoverLaw.org Prelaw Undergraduate Scholars Programs, and LSAC Law School Forums. The intern will be expected to prepare memos and written assignments, answer inquiries from prospective students, and assist with other projects as assigned. Some travel will be required. The duration of the position is 10 to 12 weeks.

Qualifications: The summer internship is restricted to currently enrolled law students in good academic standing. Preference will be given to candidates with advanced communication skills, including strong knowledge and understanding of various social media websites. Compensation: The intern will be expected to work a 37.5-hour week, and the compensation will be $22 per hour. The intern will work at the LSAC headquarters in Newtown, PA, and housing assistance will be provided, if needed.

Washington State Pro Bono Council Offering 2014-2015 Access to Justice Policy Internship, Open Until Filled

Volunteer lawyer programs (VLPs) in Washington State have a unique and complex history. Each of the 18 current VLPs evolved in its own way. Several VLPs started as projects of local bar associations, while others were started by groups of attorneys responding to the need in their community. Some programs became stand-alone nonprofit corporations, others became part of community action centers, and three programs remain part of their local bar associations. The local nature of the VLPs is both a challenge and strength.

In response to these realities, the Pro Bono Subcommittee of the Access to Justice Board’s Delivery Systems Committee proposed that a Statewide Pro Bono Council (PBC) be formed to unify and address the needs of Washington’s VLPs – the proposal was adopted in July 2013 and launched in January 2014. The PBC is situated as a committee of the Access to Justice Board.  The PBC welcomes the participation of a law student as an ATJ intern.

The student will be invited to attend PBC meetings, shadow VLP clinics and projects, and be able to work on discrete projects related to the effective delivery of pro bono services in Washington, including one major research project. The nature and scope of these projects will be determined by the PBC, the Manager, and the student as the relationship develops. The research project will involve investigation and analysis of the systemic delivery of legal aid across the state.

Washington Supreme Court Seeking Externs in Winter, Spring, and Summer Quarters – Work with Justice Gonzalez

Justice González is an associate justice of the Washington State Supreme Court, the highest state appellate court.  His externs work under the close supervision of his lead law clerk, Laura Anglin. Externs will review and draft memoranda to the court analyzing and recommending the proper disposition of motions and state habeas corpus (personal restraint) petitions. They will review and make recommendations on bench memos, opinions, and attorney discipline matters. They may assist in the preparation of speeches, CLE materials, rules, and opinions. Southern Poverty Law Center Seeking Staff Attorney for Economic Justice Project in Montgomery, Alabama

The Southern Poverty Law Center seeks an attorney to join the Economic Justice Project in its Montgomery, Alabama office. The Southern Poverty Law Center is dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry, and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of our society. Our Economic Justice Project seeks to address the systems, both public and private, that keep people trapped in poverty. Past and present areas of focus have been predatory payday and car title lending, the criminalization of poverty and related barriers the criminal justice system creates for persons to escape poverty, modern debtors’ prisons, access to public benefits and more. The practice group is based in Montgomery, Alabama but works across the Southeast United States. The practice group was formed in 2012, and is growing significantly to expand its work. The practice group is headed by a Deputy Legal Director who oversees this and another practice group, and has two full-time attorneys, one part-time attorney, and a researcher/advocate; the practice group is in the process of hiring a second researcher/advocate.

The members reside in 36 villages in a remote area around Bristol Bay, Alaska. We are seeking a full-time Fellow to reside in Dillingham, Alaska, where BBNA is headquartered, for 9 months, from September 2013 through May 2014. The Fellow will travel to villages with BBNA staff to meet with clients and provide estate planning services. The Fellow will be supervised by Center personnel and will have on-site contact with an Alaska Legal Services attorney.

Qualifications: This is a unique opportunity for a recent law school graduate to gain hands-on legal experience in a unique location! BBNA members have special estate planning needs, and the Fellow will undergo training on those special needs, as well as estate planning for native Alaskans.

Salary: expense stipend of $34,000

A partial list of the Center’s major litigation includes Plyler v. Doe, 457 U.S. 202 (1982) (challenge to state statute excluding undocumented children from public elementary schools); Reno v. Catholic Social Services, 509 U.S. 43 (1993) (national class action for persons unlawfully denied legalization under the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986); Reno v. Flores, 507 U.S. 292 (1993) (national class action on behalf of children denied release on bail pending the outcome of deportation proceedings); League of United Latin American Citizens v. Wilson, 131 F.3d 1297 (9th Cir. 1997) (state-wide class action challenging constitutionality of state proposition denying health care, social services and education to suspected undocumented immigrants); and Perez-Olano v. The Center seeks a full-time attorney to work on complex litigation, policy analysis and advocacy, and to assist in providing technical support, advocacy support, and training to lawyers and paralegals employed by California legal services programs. The position requires a creative, pro-active, and rigorously intellectual approach to the practice of law, as well as a strong desire to work in the public interest.

Qualifications:  J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school; Active membership in the California Bar; Exceptional legal research, writing, analytical, and oral advocacy skills; Demonstrated commitment to social justice and the practice of law in the public interest; Expertise in constitutional law, immigration law, and/or federal litigation preferred; Ability to assist in grant administration and reporting.

Salary: $50,000-70,000 per year depending on qualifications. Benefits include medical and dental insurance, sick leave and annual vacation, and the opportunity to learn or hone high-level litigation skills.
