The classroom is the place where a child’s vision first becomes essential. In American elementary schools, teachers and administrators rarely have the necessary information related to vision abilities of children that are so critical to reading. Currently, access to assessment and support depends on the size and quality of schools, educational programs, and intervention strategies and availability of support. Medical providers and others screening for vision problems often rely on the same eye chart that the school screenings use, which checks only for distance vision. New approaches to vision assessment and therapy – and the use of technologies to provide better access to data about these issues — are being developed. How do we ensure that ALL children have access to these advances? Methods and strategies to improve outcomes for students with vision problems will be a result of sharing knowledge and developing partnerships among the many stakeholders – which is the focus of this symposium.

Every day, thousands of youth face profound legal and social barriers that increase their chances of dropping out of school, being homeless or ending up in the juvenile justice system. TeamChild uses its legal expertise and community partnerships to break down barriers to community services in order to overcome the root causes of a youth’s involvement in the juvenile justice system.

TeamChild is a member of the Alliance for Equal Justice, Washington’s network of organizations providing civil legal aid to people in need. TeamChild is also a member of the Washington Defender Association (WDA), a statewide membership organization for public defenders, and of the National Juvenile Justice Network, which enhances the capacity of juvenile justice coalitions and organizations to promote practices that are fair, equitable and developmentally appropriate for all children, youth and families involved in, or at risk of becoming involved in, the justice system.

TeamChild’s work is grounded in our Core Values and commitment to making sure that we are all listening to young people’s perspectives and voices and including them in making decisions about their lives. The stakes for the youth we work with are high ‐without assistance to address their urgent needs, they may drop out of school, end up homeless, or incarcerated.  Legal services for youth are the core of our agency’s work and inform our outreach, trainings, and broader advocacy.

Reports of Racism in US Justice System- News from ACLU Human Rights Program, NYC

Earlier this week the ACLU, Lawyers’ Committee, NAACP, and the ABA participated in a hearing initiated by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) on Reports of Racism in the Justice System of the United States. The video of the hearing is available here. The ACLU of Michigan presented a powerful video testimony of Jewel Hall, mother of Milton Hall, an African American homeless man with mental disabilities who was killed in July 2012 by 8 police officers in a firing squad-type shooting. At the hearing, the DOJ was pressed to reopen their criminal civil rights investigation and to hold police officers accountable.  You can read more about this this case in the written submission of the ACLU of Michigan. In conjunction with this hearing the ACLU submitted a written statement on racial disparities in sentencing.

Finally, the IACHR’s Rapporteurship on the Rights of Persons of African Descent and against Racial Discrimination is in the process of developing a thematic study on race and criminal justice in the US. This thematic study presents a great opportunity for US civil society groups to engage with the IACHR on race and justice issues; it could also be a useful instrument for the Network and the CERD Task Force to maintain momentum in holding the US accountable for failure to fully implement the Race Convention and the last CERD concluding observations.

Brooklyn Defender Services (BDS) is one of the largest public defense providers in the United States. We represent more than 43,000 clients per year in a variety of legal proceedings in New York City, primarily indigent criminal, family, and immigration defense. Kendall Fellowship in Environmental Justice and Climate Policy, Due 10/31

This up to two-year fellowship is open to candidates who will have completed their Ph.D. by spring 2015. The fellow will work with staff in both the Center for Science and Democracy and the Climate and Energy Program at UCS, and with external partners from environmental justice (EJ) organizations, to study costs and benefits of emissions reduction strategies to combat climate change.  The fellow will contribute to formulating research questions, investigating, presenting, and making policy and other recommendations to strengthen connections and bridge gaps between the mainstream environmental movement and environmental justice movement. ACLU of Washington Seeking Temporary Legislative Session Aide, Due Before 11/1

The ACLU of Washington is a non-profit public interest organization devoted to protecting civil rights and civil liberties. The Legislative Session Aide is part of the Policy Advocacy Group, which consists of legislative, field and policy staff who advance the ACLU-WA’s priorities at the state and local level and strategically involve ACLU-WA supporters in that effort.

The Legislative Session Aide will support the Legislative Director during the 2015 state legislative session in Olympia.  The Legislative Director is primarily in Olympia during the session and relies on the Session Aide, who works in our Seattle office, for managing scheduling, bill analysis and tracking, and other important support work.  The Session Aide also works within a closely coordinated four-person team consisting of the Legislative Director, Legislative Associate (who primarily lobbies in Olympia along with the Legislative Director) and Policy Advocacy Group Assistant (based in Seattle).  This is a full-time, temporary position which begins as soon as possible in November, and continues through the conclusion of the 2015 legislative session, currently slated for late April.

CCR is a national not-for-profit legal, educational, and advocacy organization dedicated to advancing and protecting the rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Interns will have the opportunity to work with CCR attorneys on a range of projects, particularly related to corporate accountability, torture, detention, suppression of dissent, and anti-militarism and violations under the Alien Tort Statute, the Torture Victim Protection Act, and universal jurisdiction.  The intern will spend 10-20 hours per week between January and May 2015 assisting attorneys on projects. King County Superior Court Seeking On-Call Bailiffs, Paid Position

Temporary, at-will employee who is employed at the pleasure of the hiring authority, King County Superior Court. The position is short term in duration, 910 hours or less in a calendar year. Work is sporadic and not guaranteed. Employee will cover in court for absent bailiffs when they are on leave.

Duties: Assist the assigned judge, act as a liaison between the court and other agencies, jurisdictions, jurors observers, court staff visitors and the general public. Handle sensitive, confidential and potentially volatile situations. Maintain database of case management. Ensures confidential and direct support to facilitate the operation of the Court.

Skills required: Ability to work in high pressure environment in a calm, professional manner. Ability to maintain confidential information on matters before the court. Skill in organizational techniques including prioritizing multiple tasks while adapting to frequent and sudden changes in workload demand. Must be able to work both independently and as a member of a team.

Rate of pay is $27.61 per hour, with 40 hours of paid training provided prior to assignments. This on-call position is not benefits eligible.

PRRAC is also working to support the development of a regional housing mobility program in the Philadelphia area.

This position is a term-limited temporary position (TLT) anticipated to last for two years with a possibility of extending to three years at the pleasure of the appointing authority.

King County leaders have identified the need to reduce the number of adults who cycle through the criminal justice system and to coordinate the County’s multiple on-going efforts to reduce recidivism and improve re-entry of incarcerated adults into the community.

The Recidivism Reduction and Re-entry Senior Project Manager will work collaboratively to build a County-wide strategic approach to recidivism reduction. The position will develop an implementation plan building on King County’s previous and ongoing re-entry plans and programs. Development of the plan will include at least the following activities:   (1) coordinating with internal and external partners to establish shared goals, definitions, and agreed-upon measurements and targets; (2) assisting with an effort to survey and map existing projects and programs that support reduced recidivism and re-entry, including consideration of equity and social justice impact; and (3) identifying additional culturally appropriate and effective strategies to reduce recidivism and improve re-entry, while specifically addressing racial and ethnic disparities in the criminal justice system.  The position may also support grant-funded efforts to improve re-entry in partnership with other agencies and jurisdictions.  Outcomes from this effort are expected to benefit adult jail inmates through better connection with services to meet the needs of incarcerated individuals so they can reduce future involvement with the criminal justice system. The ultimate goal of the work is to stop the revolving door of the justice system through coordination and strategic application of County and community programs. The position will not directly run or manage a program.

DRW is a private non-profit organization designated by the governor and mandated by the federal government to protect the rights of people with disabilities in Washington State. Our mission is to advance the dignity, equality, and self-determination of people with disabilities. We work to pursue justice on matters related to human and legal rights. DRW provides free services to people with disabilities.

Project Description

DRW seeks to host a fellowship focused on improving graduation rates of Native American youth with disabilities attending Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) schools and public high schools.

Washington State Native American students who receive special education services have very low high school graduation rates. They had the lowest graduation rate of all racial and ethnic groups in the 2012-2013 school year – a little over 50% graduate from high school in four years.  Graduation rates for students in special education at Washington State BIE schools ranged from 0% to 60%. This problem affects many youth because Washington is one of the states with the highest population of Native American students and those students are nearly twice as likely to be identified as having a disability as the general student population.

The fellow will investigate the causes of these low graduation rates, collaborate with interested stakeholders, educate Native American students and families about special education rights and self-advocacy steps they can take, and provide advocacy in individual and systemic cases to enforce special education rights of Native American students in order for them to more successfully transition to employment and post-secondary education.

Washington Budget & Policy Center is now accepting applications for the 2014 – 2015 Betty Jane Narver Fellowship. The fellowship is open to any currently enrolled graduate student in a college or university, and recent graduates with a master’s degree or Ph.D.

Qualified applicants should have excellent written and oral communications skills, a commitment to accuracy and attention to detail, and a demonstrated interest in fiscal policy. To achieve our goal of training and supporting new voices in the policy arena, we’re especially interested in candidates from diverse backgrounds.

The fellow will receive a monthly stipend and be responsible for less than 20 hours a week.  This position is not eligible for benefits. Reimbursable travel may be required to specific policy-related trainings chosen by the Budget & Policy Center.  The fellowship will generally run from November 2014 through April 2015 (this is flexible).
