Eastside Legal Assistance Program seeks PAID Bilingual Phone Line Intake Assistant

Your role as the Legal Phone Intake Assistant will be to screen callers for eligibility, perform the detailed case intake, and summarize the case for ELAP DV Staff Attorneys or our Pro Bono legal clinic attorneys to provide issue-tailored legal advice.

Applicants with foundational knowledge of legal issues are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Staff phone line to answer calls from current and prospective clients
  • Screen callers for residence, income and civil legal matter guidelines
  • Perform detailed legal intake using the Legal Server Database.
  • Schedule legal clinic appointments and confirm or cancel existing appointments
  • Provide clients with referral information to appropriate community agencies
  • Assist with case management tasks as needed, such as data entry in Excel.
  • Report to ELAP Legal Clinic Coordinator

SEIU is a progressive, dynamic and growing labor organization representing over 2 million members in the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada, principally in the property service, public service, and health care fields. Attorneys in SEIU’s Legal Department engage in innovative lawyering to further the organization’s interests in organizing new workers, improving working conditions, engaging in political action, and achieving social justice. This includes representation of SEIU in litigation before courts and administrative agencies involving the National Labor Relations Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act, election campaign finance laws, and local and state labor relations statutes.

Law clerks and externs in the SEIU Legal Department conduct legal research and draft legal memoranda, work with attorneys on pending litigation, attend hearings and conferences, and meet with union leaders.

Generally, law clerks and externs are assigned to work in the Legal Department in Washington, D.C. However, a full-time law clerk may be assigned to work at a field location. One or more of the summer clerks will be selected through the Peggy Browning Fund (www.peggybrowningfund.org).

Law clerks are paid $22/hour. Externs receive credit from their law schools. We are interested in candidates with a demonstrated commitment to workers’ rights and social change. The successful applicant will have a strong academic background with excellent writing and researching skills. In every assignment, law interns research and apply immigration statutes, regulations, and case law, thus increasing their familiarity with the field of immigration law and allowing them to exercise their research and writing skills. All interns work under the supervision of a staff attorney.

The high profile, varied, and interesting work in RFA provides students pursuing a career in economics, statistics, or financial analysis the opportunity to work in the government sector.

We are looking for someone who can work 30 to 40 hours per week during most weeks this summer. The start and end dates are flexible to accommodate the student’s schedule.

As a summer intern you will have an opportunity to assist tax policy specialists by:
· Updating tax analysis models and/or the underlying data
· Conducting analysis of existing or proposed tax changes
· Constructing, cleaning up, matching and merging databases
· Gathering and compiling data on various state taxes and tax changes

Required qualifications:
· Experience with Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel
· Completed at least four semesters or six quarters at an accredited college or university by the start of the internship.

Desired qualifications:
· Experience with Microsoft Access
· Experience with a statistical analysis software such as SAS, R, or STRATA

Compensation: $12.79 to 15.05 per hour.

The Policy Research Fellow is a full-time, one year position in Washington, D.C. QUALIFICATIONS:

He currently serves as a founding Board Member of Capital City Bank, a Blackowned bank in Atlanta, and is also Board Chair of BASIC Diversity, Inc., the Nation’s oldest diversity consulting firm. He has provided civil rights counsel to Presidents Johnson, Carter, Reagan, Clinton, and Obama, and he continues to lecture on racial justice and democracy throughout the world.

The New School for Social Research named Dr. C.T. Vivian “… spiritual leader, apostle of social justice, strategist of the civil rights movement … For decades he has been in the vanguard of the struggle for racial equality in America,” as they presented him with one of his many honorary doctorates.

Dr. Vivian, once known as a Christian journalist, is best known for his work with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As National Director of Affiliates, and strategist for every Southern Christian Leadership Conference (S.C.L.C.) organization, he truly helped change the nation. In Birmingham, his work helped to enact the Civil Rights Bill, and in Selma, the Voting Rights Bill. Vivian was deeply involved in other civil rights movements in Nashville, TN; Danville, VA; St. Augustine, FL; and Chicago, IL. Dr. Vivian won his first non-violent direct action movement in 1947 by integrating restaurants in Peoria, IL. The summer following the Selma Movement, Dr. Vivian developed, organized, and launched Vision, an educational program that provided over 700 Alabama students with college scholarships. Vision would later be known as Upward Bound. In 1970 Vivian authored the first book written by a member of Dr. King’s staff entitled Black Power and the American Myth.

He is featured throughout PBS’s acclaimed documentary Eyes On The Prize (1987 & 2006). PBS later produced a full-length presentation, The Healing Ministry of the Rev. Dr. C.T. Vivian. He is also featured as both an activist and analyst in the series, The People’s Century (PBS/WGBH, 1998), and in the Tom Brokaw documentary King (History Channel, 2008).

After leaving Dr. King’s Executive Staff, Dr. Vivian trained ministers and developed the urban curriculum for seminaries throughout the nation at the Urban Training Center in Chicago. He returned to the realm of seminary education as the Dean of Divinity at Shaw University Seminary. There he originated and acquired funding for an unprecedented national-wide program, the basis of his doctoral work, Seminary Without Walls. In 2008, Dr. Vivian founded the C.T. Vivian Leadership Institute, Inc., based in Atlanta, Georgia, to create a model leadership culture for the purpose of training and educating the new generation of grass-roots leaders. More recently, Dr. Vivian received an Honorary Doctorate from Morehouse College (2010), served as National President of S.C.L.C. (2012), and currently serves as Dean of The Urban Institute at The Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Eastside Legal Assistance Program (“ELAP”) is looking for a law student to intern in our Domestic Violence Legal Program (“DVLP”) for the Winter Quarter 2016.

ELAP is a non-profit organization that provides no-cost civil legal services to survivors of domestic violence, including related family law issues (such as custody, parenting plans, spousal support, etc.), throughout King County, Washington, and to low-income residents of East and Northeast King County.  The intern will work with staff attorneys in the representation of clients, including providing assistance to draft pleadings and to interview clients, as well as to research points of law.  By the conclusion of the internship, it is expected that the intern will craft a legal memorandum that can be used as a writing sample.

This position will provide experience in practical legal skills such as client interviewing, legal issue spotting, case development, and working with low-income clients.  In addition, the intern will learn substantive and procedural aspects to family law practice, with an emphasis on representing domestic violence survivors. This position is unpaid but can be sponsored for academic credit if available through the student’s school.

Bridging the Gap provides legal referrals for low and moderate income individuals as a part of the WSBA Moderate Means Program.

Bridging the Gap is a UW Law in-house pro bono program. The goal of the program is to increase access to civil legal services for people of moderate means who cannot afford an attorney but make too much money to qualify for traditional free legal aid services. The program is focused in the areas of Family, Housing and Consumer law.

Law students serving as Bridging the Gap volunteer interns interview potential clients by telephone to collect information and evaluate their cases. Qualifying cases will be referred by interns to participating attorneys who have agreed to represent clients for a reduced fee. After completing training, Bridging the Gap interns will be expected to commit to a minimum of five hours a week for the duration of fall and winter quarters (one hour is a weekly staff meeting).

Benefits to students:

  • Hands-on experience interviewing clients;
  • Training in substantive legal issues, issue-spotting, interviewing skills and ethics;
  • Instruction on how to use the Legal Server database, which is used by most of the civil legal aid organizations in Washington State, and many other states;
  • Supervision and mentoring by experienced attorneys;
  • The satisfaction of helping low and moderate income individuals who otherwise might not receive any legal help at all;
  • Time spent volunteering for Bridging the Gap counts for recognition with the Pro Bono Honors Society.

Upper level students (2L, 3L and LLM) may participate in training for the program now (fall quarter) and begin interviewing clients in November. 1Ls can train now and begin interviewing clients in January.

GQUAL Campaign to Increase Gender Parity on International Rights Bodies

According to a study conducted by GQUAL, the lack of gender parity, specifically the underrepresentation of women, affects almost all international tribunals and monitoring bodies. They report that women hold only 17% of positions on international courts and 25% of positions on regional human rights bodies. The GQUAL Declaration notes that States are generally responsible for nominating and electing candidates to these international bodies, but often lack transparent guidelines and procedures for such processes. Additionally, most States do not have mechanisms to correct gender disparities. By not respecting the principle of non-discrimination, States Parties may be in violation of Article 8 of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).

Thomas Jefferson School of Law is pleased to announce the second Jameson Crane III Disability and the Law Writing Competition. Made possible by the generous gift of Thomas Jefferson School of Law alumnus Jameson Crane III, this competition seeks to encourage outstanding student scholarship at the intersection of law and medicine, or law and the social sciences. The competition promotes an understanding of these topics, furthers the development of legal rights and protections, and improves the lives of those with disabilities. Submissions will be judged anonymously by an independent panel of experts.

If you win, you will get a $1,500 cash prize and Thomas Jefferson Law Review (TJLR) will consider the paper for publication under the TJLR’s editorial standards.  Two second place winners will each receive a $1,000 cash prize.  (Preference for these additional winners will be given to submissions from disciplines not represented by the grand prize winner.)

Attention Rising 3Ls! Attorney General’s Honors Program Application Period Now Open for Entry-Level Attorneys, Due 9/8

The Attorney General’s Honors Program is the Department of Justice’s recruitment
program for entry-level attorneys, and is the only way DOJ hires law students directly out of law
school. Judicial law clerks, full-time graduate law program (LLM) students, and law school
graduates in qualifying full-time legal fellowships are also eligible. The first opportunity for law
students to apply for the Honors Program is the summer before their third year of law school.
For the 2015-2016 Attorney General’s Honors Program, the on-line centralized electronic
application opened on July 31, 2015, and will close on September 8, 2015. Environment and Natural Resources Division intends to fill 10 slots this year.

Alaska Supreme Court Clerkship for Fall 2016, Due 9/11

The Alaska Court System is accepting applications for Fall 2016 for the Alaska Supreme Court and Court of Appeals. The Supreme Court is the appellate court of final authority in Alaska. There are five Supreme Court Justices. Four  justices are located in Anchorage, one justice is in Fairbanks. The Court of Appeals hears appeals in criminal and quasi -criminal cases (such as juvenile delinquency cases). There are three appellate judges, all located in Anchorage. Judicial clerks conduct legal research and prepare memoranda of law for judges or justices. Positions commence mid-August to early September 2016.

Justice Craig Stowers will be conducting interviews for the whole Court at UW Law on Thursday, October 1, 2015. (Justice Stowers will become Chief Justice in July.)

To apply for positions in the Supreme Court and be considered for an interview with Chief Justice Stowers on October 1, applicants must submit the following: a cover letter, resume, a copy of all law school transcripts, and a brief writing sample which was not substantially edited by someone else. Two or three letters of recommendation from law professors or employers are also required to complete the application and be considered for an interview. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities is a nationally recognized non-profit that conducts research on budget, tax, and other issues and promotes policies to improve the lives of low- and moderate-income people.  We are seeking a Research Assistant or Associate (RA) – title commensurate with experience – to work with a team of highly skilled national policy analysts on a range of current federal budget, tax, and low-income policy issues.

The RA will collect and analyze data, develop written analyses and graphic presentations of findings, and use academic research and other resources.  The RA will help prepare reports on, and analyses of, major decisions before Congress and the Executive Branch, examining the budget implications of such proposals, how their benefits would be distributed across different income groups, and the extent to which they will likely achieve their stated objectives.  The RA will also work on projects for Policy Futures, a new Center initiative that focuses on medium- and long-term policy challenges, particularly the link between budget choices and the need to boost economic security and opportunity for low- and moderate-income individuals and families.  In addition, the RA will respond to information requests by policymakers, the media, and other national organizations.

The Cork Online Law Review at University College Cork, Ireland is a non-profit Law Review which provides an opportunity for undergraduates and graduates alike, to have their work published. The Cork Online Law Review (more fondly known as COLR) was revolutionary when established by law students who had the vision of forming Ireland’s only online law review to be run solely by law students.  The Cork Online Law Review is internationally renowned, having been described by the New York University Law Faculty as ‘the leading online law review in Ireland,’ and can be viewed at http://corkonlinelawreview.com.

The Editorial Board of the Cork Online Law Review is currently seeking submissions for the 14th Edition which is due to be published online here and in hard copy on the 26th March 2015. All submissions should be on a legal topic, and be between three and nine thousand words in length. Submissions are also welcome in Irish, French and German. Book reviews and case notes will also be considered. We use the Oxford Style guide as our house style guide.

There is a medal for the overall best submission, with an accompanying cash prize of €300. There is also a medal for best non-English submission.

Pro Bono Service Opportunity with the Volunteer Tax & Loan Program in Alaska

The Alaska Business Development Center, Inc. (ABDC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Anchorage, Alaska, has been providing a wide spectrum of business consulting services to rural Alaska since 1978. ABDC created the Volunteer Tax and Loan Program (VTLP) after recognizing the need for quality tax services in the isolated, rural communities of Alaska that are very often only accessible by small aircraft. Since 1996, VTLP has strived to provide quality tax preparation services and education on taxpayer rights and obligations to rural residents across the state.

VTLP is seeking volunteers from various professions and local universities to participate in the program. Volunteers will be trained as either a tax preparer or educator/team leader, or both.  Volunteers typically travel in teams of two to four volunteers, one educator/leader and up to three preparers based on the needs of the community.  The weekend trips are three to four days, depending upon flight schedules, while the week long trips are for a week and typically service multiple communities. Prior tax experience is helpful but not required.

  • The satisfaction of helping low and moderate income individuals who otherwise might not receive any legal help at all;
  • Time spent volunteering for Bridging the Gap counts as credits for the Pro Bono Honors Program.

Upper level students (2L, 3L and LLM) may participate in training for the program now (fall quarter) and begin interviewing clients in November. 1Ls can train now and begin interviewing clients in January.

Pro Bono Opportunity with Eastside Legal Assistance Program: Volunteer as a Legal Assistant

Do you have research and analytical skills, legal assistant skills or experience and want to use these skills to help quantify legal realities for survivors of domestic violence? Come make equal access to justice in our community a reality by assisting Eastside Legal Assistance Program (ELAP) staff attorneys with a targeted research project. Since 1998, ELAP has provided survivors of domestic violence and low-income residents of King County with a variety of civil case services enabling equal access to justice including, one-on-one legal clinics, unbundled legal services, brief services, full representation and community education seminars.

Your role as ELAP Legal Assistant volunteer will be to review DV and family law cases and quantify legal outcomes of those clients who worked with, and without, attorneys. This research will open up new ways to advocate for legal aid.

U.S. Department of Justice Introduces New Job Search Mobile App for Law Students and Attorneys

The U.S. Department of Justice unveiled a new mobile app, called DOJ Law Jobs, which will provide attorneys and law students with a quick and easy way to find an attorney position or law student internship with the Department. DOJ Law Jobs is available for free now on iTunes for Apple iPhone, and additional versions for iPad and Android devices will be available in the next few weeks. The mobile app was developed by the Office of Attorney Recruitment and Management and Office of the Chief Information Officer. Users of the app will be able to create personalized job searches based on practice area, geographic preference, and hiring organization.
