Every year, our Legal Advocate Staff Attorneys provide phone and email assistance to hundreds of people facing diabetes discrimination in every part of the United States. Some are in crisis. They have lost their job, had a child removed from school, or have had a loved one die in detention.

Legal Advocates do not engage in litigation. Instead, they empower individuals to engage in self-advocacy. Legal Advocates identify communication issues and sources of conflict. They give people professional information on their legal rights. They identify practical options for resolving problems, and coach them through self-advocacy action steps. When needed, Legal Advocates provide additional empowerment resources, or connect people to a network of attorneys for direct representation.

The primary role of the Staff Attorney is to zealously represent the client in criminal proceedings, including arraignment, pretrial hearings, trial preparation, plea negotiations, and trial and sentencing. In addition, the Staff Attorney (to the extent possible) is expected to maintain a continuing duty to the client. The Staff Attorney counsels and renders or assists in securing appropriate legal services for the client in matters arising from the original criminal proceedings and maintains contact to ensure the protection of the client’s rights so long as the client remains under court jurisdiction. The Staff Attorney is responsible for the investigation and preparation of assigned cases. The Staff Attorney assists OPD leadership and other staff, as directed, and complies with all legal standards and requirements.

Candidates must be third year law students or recent law school graduates. Additionally, candidates will have demonstrated interest in working with individuals charged with criminal offenses from diverse cultural backgrounds and will have the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. The Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine is now accepting applications for the Penn Fellowship in Advanced Biomedical Ethics. This two-year program seeks to train academic bioethicists who will be future leaders in the field. Fellows will pursue mentored research and a Master of Bioethics or Master of Science in Medical Ethics degree. In addition, they will obtain training and experience in clinical and research ethics.

Eligible applicants must have a doctoral degree (PhD, MD, JD) in hand by May 2016.  Previous work in bioethics is not required.  Applications will be accepted until December 14, 2015.

The Equal Justice Society (“EJS”) is transforming the nation’s consciousness on race through law, social science, and the arts. A national legal organization focused on restoring constitutional safeguards against discrimination, EJS’s goal is to help achieve a society where race is no longer a barrier to opportunity. Specifically, EJS is working to fully restore the constitutional protections of the Fourteenth Amendment and the Equal Protection Clause, which guarantees all citizens receive equal treatment under the law. We use a three-pronged approach to accomplish these goals, combining legal advocacy, outreach and coalition building, and education through effective messaging and communication strategies.

Our legal strategy aims to broaden conceptions of present-day discrimination to include unconscious and structural bias by using cognitive science, structural analysis, and real-life experience. Currently, EJS targets its advocacy efforts on school discipline, special education, the school-to-prison pipeline, and inequities in the criminal justice system.

In the Fall, LSNC begins its recruitment process for third-year law students preparing to take the California Bar Examination the following summer. For more than fifteen years, LSNC has hired at least one candidate, either through a fellowship or as a regular staff member, from among that year’s law school graduates. Center for Appellate Litigation Seeking Appellate Criminal Defense Summer 2016 Intern, Due 1/8/2016

The Center for Appellate Litigation is seeking full-time volunteer interns for the summer of 2016.  The internship has three components:

(i) helping clients resolve the day-to-day problems they face during their incarceration;

(ii) working closely with experienced appellate attorneys on substantive writing projects, including briefs and motions; and

(iii) preparing clients for parole appearances and submitting materials on their behalf.

The City of Seattle Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs promotes a citywide culture that understands and values the contributions of immigrant and refugee communities. It partners with the Seattle Immigrant and Refugee Commission, other City departments, community organizations and members of the private sector to improve services for the Immigrant and Refugee communities and to ensure a consistent implementation of principles of social justice issues. Under Sahar’s lead, OIRA just launched the Refugee Women’s Institute, an innovative program designed to build understanding and trust between refugee communities in Seattle and the Seattle Police Department (SPD). The institute, the first of its kind in the nation, aims to build a grassroots network of refugee women leaders while increasing the cultural competency of the female officers who participate.

Sahar Fathi (JD ’08) is a policy analyst for the Seattle Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs. She has served as a legislative aide to Councilmember Mike O’Brien on the Seattle City Council and as a legal clerk for the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. Sahar earned a JD and a Masters in International Studies from the University of Washington, and graduated cum laude from USC with a dual BA in French and International Relations. She attended the Sorbonne Université in Paris, France on exchange, and received a diploma in International and European Law from the Université Jean-Moulin in Lyon, France.

Jennifer Tse, the Western Region U-Visa Coordinator for the Wage and Hour Division of the U.S. Department of Labor will be here to share information about the U-Visa and the Department’s certification process and protocols.

Jennifer Tse is the U Visa Coordinator for the Western Region in the Wage and Hour Division of the U.S. Department of Labor.  Her region covers eight states and three U.S. territories, including Guam, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands.  In her position as the U Visa Coordinator, she works with exploited workers and makes recommendations whether to certify immigrant victims of labor crimes for immigration relief.  Of the labor crimes, she works especially with victims of trafficking crimes.  Prior to her position with the Department of Labor, Jennifer was an attorney at the Immigrant Justice Project of the Southern Poverty Law Center in Atlanta.  She worked both as an immigration attorney and in litigation primarily involving class-action labor trafficking, workers’ rights, and civil rights cases. She has provided technical legal support and trainings related to immigration relief on behalf of victims of human trafficking, including U and T visas, to federal government officials, national civil rights organizations, advocates, and private firm attorneys.  She is also a member of the White House Initiative on Asians and Pacific Islanders’ Regional Interagency Working Group for Region IX.  A California native, Jennifer received her J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law and her B.A. from UCLA.

The Seattle Community Law Center provides accessible legal advocacy to people living with physical and mental disabilities so that they may obtain the resources necessary to overcome barriers to financial and medical stability. Simply put, SCLC helps break the cycle of homelessness. Seattle has the highest population of people in Washington living with disabilities that need help with legal problems.  If we want a strong safety net to ensure all people can achieve economic and medical stability, we all have to do our part.

Join us in celebrating and supporting the great work of the Seattle Community Law Center and share a few good laughs at our upcoming 4thAnnual Comedy Fundraiser LOL for SCLC comedy event on Wednesday, November 5th! The show starts at 6:30 and will end around 8:30.  It will be held at Parlor Live! The Employees’ Compensation appeals Board (ECAB), a United States Department of Labor appellate adjudicatory board, is seeking to hire a Law Clerk with a projected start date in May 2014. 

The ECAB, located at the Frances Perkins Building in Washington, D.C., hears appeals taken from determinations and awards under the Federal Employees’ Compensation Act (FECA) with respect to claims of federal employees injured in the course of their employment.  The decisions of the Board are made in accordance with its statutory mandate, based on a thorough review of the case record as compiled by the Office of Workers’ Compensation Programs (OWCP).  The ECAB has final ­authority to determine benefits payable with respect to the disability or death of federal employees injured in the scope of their employment.  There is no further administrative or judicial appeal of ECAB decisions.

The Law Clerk position is a two-year appointment at the GS-11, Step 1 level. The primary responsibilities of the Law Clerk is to review and analyze case records and arguments, conduct legal research, draft decisions and orders, and responses to motions. Familiarity and work experience with the ECAB and its procedures as well as the FECA is most desirable.

The Washington State Office of Civil Legal Aid (OCLA) is an independent judicial branch agency that manages and oversees state appropriations for civil legal aid in Washington State. During the 2014 session, the Washington State Legislature enacted 2ESSB 6126 which provides for the appointment of attorneys to represent children in all dependency cases six months following termination of parental rights.

The Children’s Representation Program Manager will have primary responsibility to establish a program pursuant to which state funding will be made available to underwrite the appointment of attorneys to represent children in accordance with the practice, caseload and training standards outlined in 2ESSB 6126.

The Voting Rights Project of the ACLU has been an established and recognized national leader in the field of voting rights for more than 40 years. Its docket includes litigation in more than a dozen states and encompasses issues such as minority voting rights, redistricting, registration, election reform, felon disfranchisement, voter education, and ballot access. Most recently, the Project has been engaged in groundbreaking litigation challenging voter suppression efforts in North Carolina and onerous identification and proof of citizenship requirements for voting in various states including Arizona, Kansas, South Carolina, Texas, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. The Project also intervened on behalf of minority voters in Shelby County v. Holder, a case challenging the constitutionality of Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act; and conducted litigation to secure and protect the voting rights of Native Americans in Colorado, South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, and Montana.

The Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) is dedicated to assisting the Member States and the Secretary-General in their efforts to maintain international peace and security.  DPKO provides political and executive direction to UN Peacekeeping operations around the world and maintains contact with the Security Council, troop and financial contributors, and parties to the conflict in the implementation of Security Council mandates. This position is located in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO), Criminal Law and Judicial Advisory Service (CLJAS). The incumbent reports to the Chief of Service or his/her delegate and will be responsible for the following duties:  Assist the Chief of CLJAS or his/her delegate in the administration of the Service, including the development of workplans and budgetary documents; Contribute to the development of technical guidance materials and training tools, including by collecting lessons learned and best practices from missions for inclusion in new and updating guidance materials and training tools; Work with the Department of Field Support to develop vacancy announcements; screen candidates; and support interview panels for judicial affairs officers for field missions; Liaise with partners within and outside the Department of Peacekeeping Operations, including other United Nations entities engaged in the rule of law through the Global Focal Point arrangement and the Rule of Law Coordination and Resource Group; Draft project proposals for donor funding; Organize briefings, conferences and training events; Prepare, review and edit talking points, memoranda, meeting notes and other documents produced by CLJAS.

Friends of Animals is pleased to announce summer (2014) externship opportunities in its Wildlife Law Program (WLP), located in Denver, Colorado. Established in 2013, the WLP fills a niche between animal and environmental activism.  Animal activists often fail to fully utilize the array of local, state, federal and international environmental laws as a means to protect the rights of animals to live free from human interference.  Environmental activists often utilize these laws, but do so to achieve broad environmental objectives that may not always protect the rights of free-living animals. The mission of the WLP is to utilize the law for a singular purpose: to ensure the right of all wildlife to live in an ecosystem free from human manipulation, exploitation, or abuse.

Externs will have the opportunity to get hands-on experience by working closely with WLP attorneys to litigate matters in federal and state court, as well as engage in non-litigation advocacy projects. Typically extern projects include drafting legal documents (60-day notice letters, complaints, discovery documents, briefs, administrative comments), legal research and writing, interviewing and working directly with the client, engaging government decision-makers, and advocating at the policy level. The WLP attorneys also make an effort to expose students to a wide variety of career opportunities, including opportunities in public interest environmental law and animal rights law.

Looking for a Spring Externship? Department of Labor Seeking Spring Extern for OSHA Discrimination Case

The Department of Labor (DOL) recently filed an Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) discrimination case in federal court.  The DOL Office seeks an extern available in the Spring Quarter who can assist in trial preparation.  If you are interested in anti-discrimination issues, this is a rare opportunity to gain experience in discrimination law under OSHA and Title VII as such cases rarely go to trial.  Externs must be available for at least 16 hours per week, though more hours are available upon request.  If you are interested in the position, please contact Bruce Brown directly by email.  Mr. Brown is the Associate Regional Solicitor for the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of the Solicitor.
