logoThe Cardozo Law Institute in Holocaust and Human Rights (CLIHHR) is a leading global center for the study, teaching, and promotion of human rights.  Specifically, CLIHHR strengthens laws, norms and institutions to prevent mass atrocities, protect human rights and rebuild communities globally.

The summer internship program is ten (10) weeks long, and will begin on or around June 1, 2016.  Student interns are expected to attend training sessions on relevant skills to conduct the necessary legal and other research in furtherance of the project. It is based at the Cardozo Law Institute in Holocaust and Human Rights (CLIHHR) in New York, N.Y.  CLIHHR has stipends for two positions. The stipend for the summer is $5000.

 Applicants are expected to have strong legal research and writing skills. Students with prior knowledge of and/or a demonstrated interest in international human rights law or atrocity prevention are strongly encouraged to apply.

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE – CIVIL DIVISION, IMMIGRATION LITIGATION: FALL 2016 INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

2000px-seal_of_the_united_states_department_of_justice-svgThe Office of Immigration Litigation, District Court Section (OIL?DCS) is a highly active litigation section in the Civil Division of the Department of Justice. OIL?DCS handles immigration matters at the district court level in any of the 94 federal district courts nationwide and provides centralized expertise on district court?related immigration matters. The section’s work spans complex are?as of federal law. OIL?DCS work frequently addresses questions of federal jurisdiction, statutory interpretation, administrative law, and constitutional law – all in the context of federal immigration law, regulations, and policy. Some DCS attorneys possess specialized expertise in specific subject areas, such as detention, employment?based immigration, denaturalization, and/or terrorism? related immigration issues. In addition to district court cases, OIL?DCS handles matters in the courts of appeals that arise from its district court cases. The District Court Section is one of the few sections within the Department of Justice in which an attorney can handle cases at both the trial and appellate levels.

Most of the OIL?DCS’s litigation responsibilities are defensive in nature. Immigration litigation defense consists of a wide range of individual and class action cases, including petitions for writs of habeas corpus, Administrative Procedure Act challenges to denials of immigration benefits, actions for declaratory or injunctive relief, mandamus actions, and constitutional claims. OIL?DCS also affirmatively files and prosecutes denaturalization cases.

logo2This volunteer position is located in the U.S. Department of the Interior’s (DOI) Office of Civil Rights (OCR), Employment Complaints and Adjudication Division (ECAD).  DOI’s mission is to protect and manage the Nation’s natural resources and cultural heritage; provide scientific and other information about those resources; and honor its trust responsibilities or special commitments to American Indians, Alaska Natives, and affiliated island communities.  OCR is responsible for the development and enforcement of all civil rights and equal opportunity programs within DOI.  ECAD’s duties include: (1) adjudicating employment discrimination complaints filed against DOI by federal employees and applicants; (2) providing technical assistance and policy guidance to DOI Bureaus on all legal, administrative, and procedural matters concerning employment discrimination complaints; and (3) providing training to DOI employees, managers, and supervisors on their rights and responsibilities under applicable federal sector equal employment opportunity laws and statutes.  

The incumbent will perform the following duties under the direct supervision of a licensed attorney:  

  • Independently review and edit procedural dismissals and draft merit?based adjudications of employment discrimination complaints.  This entails analyzing evidence in a complaint file and report of investigation, conducting legal research, and writing a legal decision.   
  • Attend ECAD staff meetings, OCR staff meetings, and meetings with DOI Bureau EEO representatives.
  • Identify, monitor, and present significant developments in employment discrimination law.
  • Draft internal legal memoranda.

The incumbent must demonstrate not only superb analytical and legal writing skills, but also a familiarity with the Federal Rules of Evidence and EEO laws/policies/regulations.  

The position is located at DOI’s Headquarters, 1849 C Street, NW, Washington, DC, 20240, and requires a security clearance.  During the Fall and Spring semesters a minimum commitment of 15 hours per week is preferred, and during the Summer a commitment of 40 hours per week is preferred.

Unpaid positions are available during academic semesters and summers. Many interns/externs receive academic credit for their experience. OIA works with criminal prosecutors in the United States to secure the return of fugitives from abroad and to obtain from foreign countries evidence and other assistance (e.g. freezing of accounts and forfeiture of funds) needed in criminal investigations and prosecutions. OIA assists federal, state and local prosecutors and law enforcement agents pursuant to a network of bilateral and multilateral treaties and law enforcement agreements.

In turn, OIA assures that the United States meets its reciprocal obligations to foreign countries by responding to their requests for the extradition of fugitives and the production of evidence located in the United States. In addition to handling the thousands of international extradition and evidence gathering (mutual assistance) cases opened each year, OIA, with the Department of State, is responsible for the negotiation of law enforcement treaties, both bilateral and multilateral, needed to effect extradition and facilitate evidence gathering. When treaties come into force, OIA is responsible for working with treaty partners on an ongoing basis to assure the effective implementation of these important agreements.

KIND Seattle Seeking AmeriCorps JD Member Law Student Intern

zuno-client-kindKIND’s Seattle office is seeking a Law Student AmeriCorps JD Member for KIND’s Seattle office. The AmeriCorps JD Member will assist the Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Legal Fellow with providing legal services to unaccompanied immigrant and refugee children in immigration proceedings. KIND’s strong preference is for the intern to begin the internship during Summer 2016.

AmeriCorps JD students will serve 450 hours supporting attorneys and paralegals engaged in this effort. Students will conduct legal screenings, country conditions research, and legal analysis to support the claims of unaccompanied children placed in removal proceedings. They will have the opportunity to work alongside experienced staff and gain in-depth understanding of this complex and cutting-edge area of law.

Spanish fluency is required.

The internship will provide students with an opportunity to practice their client interviewing and counseling skills, and gain familiarity with the substance and procedure of immigration law.

What are some of the needs of low-income LGBT folks?

POVERTY IS AN LGBT ISSUE: AN ASSESSMENT OF THE LEGAL NEEDS OF LOW-INCOME LGBT PEOPLE

9178644107_da1654e3ed_oLike all of the people Legal Services NYC represents, our LGBT clients lack resources and power. But low-income LGBT people are too often also at the margins of efforts to provide help: at the margins of the legal services community because they are LGBT, and at the margins of the mainstream LGBT movement because they are poor. It is time to change the status quo. This document is part of that change—for all of us at Legal Services NYC and, we hope, for many others.

Our LGBT Low-Income Civil Legal Needs Assessment (the “Assessment”) gives low-income LGBT people a direct voice in identifying the legal challenges they face. It presents data and stories from hundreds of low-income LGBT New Yorkers and their advocates. And it offers a series of findings to enhance advocacy for all low-income LGBT clients—including both overarching conclusions and specific findings in key poverty law practice areas: anti-discrimination, public assistance, housing, health care, immigration, family, employment, education, and veterans.

But here is our most important and most fundamental conclusion: Poverty is an LGBT issue. It is incumbent on those who care about the fight for LGBT justice, and those who care about fighting poverty, to take action.

Your Federal Student Loans Just Got Easier to REPAYE

repaye-blogBeginning today, Federal Direct Loan borrowers can take advantage of a new repayment plan: REPAYE (the Revised Pay As You Earn Plan).

Some of you may be familiar with the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) Repayment Plan, which caps payments at 10% of a borrower’s monthly income and forgives any remaining balance on your student loans after 20 years of qualifying repayment. But this plan is only for recent borrowers.

REPAYE solves this problem. Like the name implies, REPAYE has some similarities to PAYE. First and foremost, REPAYE, like PAYE, sets payments at no more than 10% of income. However, REPAYE—unlike PAYE— is available to Direct Loan borrowers regardless of when they took out their loans.

KIND: New Refugee Resettlement Program Important, but Limited Tool; U.S. Must Still Engage Robust Asylum Response

KIND welcomes the Obama Administration’s decision to engage with the United Nation Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to screen those fleeing extreme and growing violence in Central America to determine if they are eligible for U.S. protection as an important step toward recognition that the region is experiencing a refugee crisis. However, refugee resettlement is a limited response that must be accompanied by full and fair access to the U.S. asylum system for those Central American families and children who reach our borders, as well as more robust asylum responses from other countries in the region, such as Mexico.

A key to protection will be ensuring that claims are heard in a timely way so that a long term solution can be reached—whether it is resettlement in the U.S. or in another country in the region—as quickly as possible. This is particularly important for children as an uncertain fate is damaging to their development and well-being. Child protection officers and best interests determinations must also be built into the process for cases involving children.

Claims for refugee status must be analyzed with an acknowledgment of the many different types of claims involving threats or harm by gangs, narco-traffickers, and other organized criminal syndicates—including sexual and gender-based violence targeting both girls and boys. Additionally, children’s claims for protection must be examined with a child-sensitive lens that takes into account their development and particular vulnerability.

PILA is not the only game in town! The Curtin Justice Fund Legal Internship Program is seeking motivated law student interns to apply for stipends available for summer 2016. The Program will pay a $2,500 stipend to three law school students who spend the summer months working for a bar association or legal services program designed to prevent homelessness or assist homeless or indigent clients or their advocates. The ideal intern will have a demonstrated interest in public interest law and experience working with poor people or on issues affecting them. All law students are eligible, and first year law students are encouraged to apply. The application deadline for Summer 2016 is Monday, March 28, 2016.

Updated Inter-American Commission Report Reviews Gender Equality, Women’s Rights Standards

Containing references to relevant IACHR’s merits decisions and thematic and country reports, judgments of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR), and provisions of regional instruments such as the American Convention on Human Rights, American Declaration of the Rights and Duties of Man, and Convention of Belém do Pará, the report is a comprehensive examination of the standards of the Inter-American human rights system. SeeIACHR, Legal Standards: Gender Equality and Women’s Rights(2015), para. 10.

The Commission welcomed reforms concerning gender equality and women’s rights in Member States and called on them to continue their efforts to improve the situation. However, it also stressed that in spite of these efforts, there are still numerous human rights problems women experience in the Americas, including various forms of violence against women, and discrimination across a wide range of rights and spheres. Department of Justice Issues New Guidance on Preventing Gender Bias in Law Enforcement

The guidance was announced today, Dec. 15, 2015, by Attorney General Loretta Lynch and was a joint effort by the following offices in the Department of Justice: the Office on Violence Against Women, the Civil Rights Division, and the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS).

Purpose of the Guidance: In partnership with law enforcement leaders and advocates for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence, DOJ issued the guidance to explain how gender bias can undermine police response to sexual assault and domestic violence and provide a set of principles that, when integrated into police policies, trainings, and practices, will help ensure that police efforts to keep victims safe and perpetrators accountable are not undermined by gender bias.

Today, DOJ issued ground-breaking guidance to law enforcement, aimed at combating gender discrimination in how police address domestic violence and sexual assault. The guidance explains how gender-biased policing is a significant civil rights issue. By issuing the guidance, DOJ is broadening the discussion about policing practices to include a focus on how women and LGBT individuals, particularly survivors of domestic and sexual violence, can be impacted by discriminatory policing.

Center for Food Safety Seeking Summer 2016 Law Clerk, Paid Position

Center for Food Safety (CFS) is a nonprofit public interest and environmental advocacy organization that works to protect human health and the environment by curbing the use of harmful food production technologies and by promoting organic and other forms of sustainable agriculture.

CFS is seeking motivated law clerks interested in doing meaningful litigation and policy work on behalf of the public and the environment. Specific issues include, for example, genetic engineering, pesticides, concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs, or factory farms), aquaculture, organics, and food labeling. Clerks’ responsibilities vary each year but typically include performing legal research, drafting pleadings, attending hearings, drafting comments and petitions to submit to administrative agencies, and supporting attorneys in litigation. Clerks are also expected to do minor administrative tasks as needed. Law clerks work closely with attorneys and staff, and are able to gain practical litigation and policy experience in a small nonprofit setting.

HomeBase is California’s public policy law firm on homelessness. Our purpose is to end homelessness, prevent its recurrence and decrease its effect on communities. Our approach is two-fold:identifying and analyzing the causes of homelessness and developing and implementing long-term solutions that remove thesecauses. We work with service providers, local communities and public and non-profit sectors to implement these solutions. HomeBase has an available internship opportunity for a law studentinterested in homelessness, housing, and health care in a publicpolicy, non-profit and/or administrative law setting. This unpaid internship is a great opportunity for a law student interested in homelessness and housing in a public policy and/or administrative law framework. We work with local, state, and federal governmentsto impact regulations, funding, and programming related to the myriad of issues faced by persons experiencing homelessness. We provide technical assistance to local non-profit service providersactively addressing the needs of the most vulnerable members of the communities we serve. Our method is to collaborate with policymakers to create local strategic plans, develop appropriate implementation mechanisms, monitor progress and outcomes, andseek out best practices for replication.

American Bar Association Section of Litigation Now Accepting Summer 2016 Judicial Intern Applications

The American Bar Association Section of Litigation will begin accepting applications for its Summer 2016 Judicial Intern Opportunity Program on November 9. Applications for first-year law students will be accepted December 1, 2015, in accordance with NALP guidelines. The program is a full-time (32 hours per week), six-week minimum, summer internship program open to all first- or second-year diverse law students.

The mission of the Judicial Intern Opportunity Program is to provide opportunities to students who are members of racial and ethnic groups that are traditionally underrepresented in the profession. The program also provides opportunities to students with disabilities, students who are economically disadvantaged, and students who identify themselves as LGBT.

Fired up about social justice issues like immigration, LGBTQ rights, and racial justice, and how they intersect with reproductive rights and justice?  Want to get hands on training in federal or state law and policy and rub elbows with and learn from leading advocates in the field?

Then consider submitting an application for the 2016-17 Reproductive Justice Fellowship Program (RJFP). The program runs from the end of August 2016 through August 2017.

RJ Federal Fellows will be placed at nonprofit organizations in Washington, D.C. to help advance reproductive justice through law and policy. Fellows in our pilot RJ State Program will be matched with one of two joint placements: New Voices For Reproductive Justice & Women’s Law Project, in Pittsburgh, PA, or Legal Voice & Surge NW, in Seattle, WA.

The Mahindra Humanities Center invites applications for one-year postdoctoral fellowships in connection with the Center’s Andrew W. Mellon Foundation seminar on the topic of violence and non-violence. The call to arms and the politics of non-violent resistance are often represented as polarities. There are, however, many gray areas that define the dialectical relationship between violence and non-violence. The Mellon seminar, in which the postdoctoral fellows play a central role, explores a different dimension of the interrelationship between violence and non-violence—as disciplinary formation, historical event, ideological or ethical discourse—each year.

Following on the themes of war (2014-15) and everyday violence (2015-16), the seminar will focus on slow violence in 2016-17.

We intend to focus on practices and processes of violence involved in large-scale historical and political transformations. The ongoing, incremental processes of slow violence may be manifested in the degradation of social and economic structures, the violation of cultural forms and practices, and the fraying of ethical and political systems. Slow violence endangers the security and sustainability of the quality of life.

The Legal Department of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (“AFL CIO”) is offering a one year fellowship beginning in September 2016. The fellowship offers an excellent opportunity for recent law school graduates to work with experienced union-side lawyers on a wide variety of issues.

The Legal Department works on a wide range of litigation, policy, regulatory and legislative matters, and assists with organizing campaigns, corporate governance issues, and other AFL CIO initiatives. The Legal Department also administers the Lawyers Coordinating Committee, a national organization of union side attorneys, which issues various publications and holds educational conferences on a regular basis.

American Civil Liberties Union of Washington Seeking Legal Interns/Externs, Fall Quarter Applicants Due Tomorrow

The American Civil Liberties Union of Washington (ACLU-WA) is pleased to offer unpaid summer and school-year internships and externships to interested law school students. A minimum commitment of 12 hours per week is required during the school year. Summer positions are full-time and last a minimum of seven weeks.

At the ACLU-WA, law students gain exposure to a broad range of civil liberties and civil rights issues and the opportunity to improve legal writing and research skills. Students work closely with staff attorneys conducting legal research, writing legal memoranda, and drafting correspondence to government agencies in response to documented complaints of civil liberties and civil rights violations. Students also assist ACLU attorneys in the development of cases for litigation, preparation of cases for trial, and submission of amicus curiae briefs in courts of
appeal.

Romulo Gallegos Fellowship Now Accepting Applications, Due 9/24

Center for Constitutional Rights Seeking International Human Rights Program Intern, Due 9/25

The Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) seeks a third or fourth year undergraduate student, recent graduate, or graduate student with a strong commitment to social justice to help with several legal and advocacy-related projects as part of a semester-long unpaid internship opportunity. CCR is a national not-for-profit legal, educational, and advocacy organization dedicated to advancing and protecting the rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Founded in 1966 by attorneys who represented civil rights movements in the South, CCR is committed to the creative use of law as a positive force for social change.

The International Human Rights (IHR) docket focuses on holding government officials and corporations accountable for serious violations of international law, primarily under the Alien Tort Statute, the Torture Victim Protection Act, the U.S. Constitution, and the principle of universal jurisdiction. It works primarily in U.S. courts, but also is involved in litigation in foreign and international courts, and advocacy using regional or international human rights mechanisms.

Montana Legal Services Association Seeking Director of Litigation, Screening to Begin 9/25

The Director of Litigation will work with the Executive Director to oversee the development and coordination of MLSA’s advocacy efforts.  The Litigation Director will be responsible for the planning, development and coordination of MLSA’s litigation strategy through lead counseling and co-counseling of major litigation, back-up of individual advocates and offices, and the training and coordination of MLSA’s substantive practice groups.  The Litigation Director also will carry a small active case load. The Litigation Director will have responsibility for supervising legal work and advocates across Montana.  The Litigation Director shall be responsible for ensuring client-centered and zealous advocacy by MLSA advocates, and for overseeing and advancing MLSA’s systemic advocacy efforts.  Travel within and without Montana will be required as needed.

The Environment and Natural Resources Division (ENRD) Seeks Spring 2016 Law Clerk, Due 9/27

The Environment and Natural Resources Division litigates in five key areas: pollution, lands and natural resources, wildlife, Indian resources, and land acquisition.

Assignments will vary. In general, interns assist the Division’s trial lawyers in preparing cases for filing and supporting the litigation effort post-filing, and assist the Division’s appellate lawyers in researching issues on appeal. Responsibilities typically include conducting legal research, drafting motions, discovery, and memoranda of law dealing with a variety of federal environmental and natural resource issues. The Division handles cases covering a broad spectrum of issues including the protection of endangered species and civil and criminal enforcement of federal pollution control laws. An internship provides an outstanding opportunity to work on cutting edge issues of environmental law.
