However, despite the risk of becoming overloaded with messages, it remains one of the most powerful and efficient communication tools.

Using email is a quick and easy way to stay connected with your team members, customers and stakeholders, particularly those who are geographically dispersed. However, it can be very easy to send ineffective emails, create the wrong impression, or even damage your reputation with sloppy practices.  In this article, we’ll look at 10 common mistakes that people make when they send emails, and explore what you can do to avoid these.

Opportunity for Service: WSBA Council on Public Defense

The WSBA Council on Public Defense (CPD) was established to implement the recommendations of the WSBA Blue Ribbon Panel on Criminal Defense, which was appointed by the Board of Governors in 2003 as a first step in addressing concerns about the quality of indigent defense services in Washington. Today, the CPD provides a unique and valuable forum for bringing together representatives of the Bar, prosecutors, private and public criminal defense counsel, the bench, elected officials and the public.

The WSBA is now recruiting volunteers to serve on the CPD. Except as noted, the members of the CPD are appointed for two-year terms, with the ability to renew their membership on the CPD for up to four years. All positions will begin Oct. 1, 2015. The open positions include:

  • Three current or former prosecutors/city attorneys. Two of the prosecutors/city attorneys will be appointed for two-year terms. One prosecutor/city attorney will be appointed for a one-year term.
  • One at-large member who will be appointed for a one-year term.

U.S. DOJ Civil Rights Division, Educational Opportunities Section Seeking Volunteer Legal Intern for Summer 2015, Due 3/1/15

The U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, Educational Opportunities Section, seeks full-time (40 hours/week) volunteer legal interns for summer 2015. Summer interns generally work for 10 weeks, but split summers (6 week minimum) may be considered on a case-by-case basis.  Students who will be second- or third-year law students, or enrolled in a graduate law program, in the 2015-2016 school year will be considered.

Interns work closely with Section attorneys in cases and investigations involving discrimination against students on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, and disability in public schools, colleges, and universities. Assignments typically include legal research and writing, assisting attorneys with investigations and compliance monitoring, assisting with fact development (including participating in witness interviews), and preparing for court appearances, depositions, and settlement negotiations. Interested interns may participate in one of the Division-wide working groups, including the LGBTI Working Group, Indian Working Group, and Status Verification Working Group, as well as inter-agency working groups such as the Supportive School Discipline Initiative and the Federal Partners in Bullying Prevention.

The Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program is a flagship leadership development program at the entry level for advanced degree candidates. It was created more than three decades ago by Executive Order and has gone through many changes over the years. The Program attracts and selects the best candidates possible, but is really designed with a more narrow focus – developing a cadre of potential government leaders.  The PMF Program inculcates a lasting bond as well as a spirit of public service, ultimately encouraging and leading to a career in the government.

In the performance of these duties, the Justice & Diversity Programs Coordinator has the following responsibilities: Coordinating and supporting meetings and events of the Pro Bono and Public Service Committee and the Diversity Committee by: scheduling and tracking RSVPs and attendance venue logistics, including help with set-up and clean-up; assigning and tracking use of conference call codes; agenda and materials preparation; Taking minutes and tracking action items; Preparing a year-end record; processing volunteer expense reimbursements; coordinating annual appointment processes; tracking volunteer registrations; Sending welcome messages; authenticating volunteers to access free educational programs; managing assigned webpages and list serves monitoring program in boxes and responding to inquiries and preparing diversity updates.

The Pro Bono Honors Program, a program of the Center for Public Service Law, encourages law students, faculty and staff to provide pro bono legal assistance to low-income communities; connects students to pro bono resources and opportunities; promotes leadership development; trains students on vital topics such as professionalism, cultural and cross-difference competency and secondary trauma/compassion fatigue; recognizes student pro bono work beyond the 60-hour public service graduation requirement; and promotes a culture of public service in the life of the law school and in the legal profession.

State Supreme Court News: Victory for Low-Income Litigants

SupremeCourtJustices2013The State Supreme Court, in a unanimous decision, ruled that GR 34 requires that all fees and costs be waived for indigent litigants.  Congrats to our friends at Legal Voice and the Northwest Justice Project!

We hold GR 34 provides a uniform standard for determining whether an individual is indigent and further requires the court to waive all fees and costs for individuals who meet this standard. The rule was adopted to ensure that indigent litigants have equal access to justice. Any fees required of indigent litigants are invalid and must be waived under the rule.

Community Representatives Sought for Law-Related Boards and Council

WSBA.jpegThe Washington State Bar Association seeks members of the public (including law students) to serve on four boards and one council for terms beginning October 1, 2013. Serving on a WSBA board or council is an excellent opportunity to get an insider’s view on how the practice of law is regulated in Washington State.

  • The Council on Public Defense addresses concerns about the quality of indigent defense services in Washington State.  Appointment is for a one-year term.
  • The Character and Fitness Board deals with matters of character and fitness bearing on qualifications of applicants for admission to practice law in Washington. The Board conducts hearings on the admission of any applicant referred to it for hearing, considers petitions for reinstatement after disbarment, and makes recommendations to the Board of Governors and Supreme Court regarding admission and reinstatement.  Appointment is for a three-year term. Hearings generally are held every month. Three of the 14-16 members of the Board are not lawyers.
  • The Disciplinary Board reviews lawyer discipline decisions. It is made up of four review committees; each committee has two lawyer members and one non-lawyer member. One committee meets each month to review requests for public hearing, admonitions, interim suspensions and other matters. The board meets six times a year as a full board.
  • The Lawyers’ Fund for Client Protection Board compensates clients who have suffered a direct financial loss caused by the dishonest conduct of a lawyer in connection with the practice of law. The Fund is funded by an annual assessment of members of the WSBA by order of the Washington State Supreme Court.
  • The Limited Practice Board oversees administration of, and compliance with, the Limited Practice Rule (APR 12) authorizing certain lay persons to select, prepare, and complete legal documents pertaining to the closing of real-estate and personal property transactions. The Board is responsible for the certification and regulation of limited practice officers (LPOs).

Applications are also being accepted for other boards which may have openings during the coming year.

2L & 3L Volunteers Needed! Help Mentor 1Ls

Wise MentorMembers of the 3L class are teaming up with CPLD to launch a mentoring program for 1L students focused on career development.  The goal of this program is to provide 1L students with mentorship as they prepare to start their post-law school job search.  Additionally, the program allows upper class students to interact with 1L students, who they would not normally get the chance to know.

All 2L and 3L students are encouraged to apply to be a mentor.  We are especially in need of students who participated in OCI, and/or submitted applications for judicial clerkships and public service positions.  The time commitment is up to you.
