The Special Litigation Section is one of several sections in the Civil Rights Division. We work to protect civil rights in the following areas:

2) the rights of individuals with disabilities to receive services in their communities, rather than in institutions;

The attorney selected for this position will be dedicated to the Section’s work pursuant to the Health Care Fraud and Abuse Control (“HCFAC”) program, with an emphasis on the Section’s matters that seek to enforce compliance with the integration mandate of the Americans with Disabilities Act, as interpreted by the Supreme Court in Olmstead v. L.C., 527 U.S. 581 (1999). More specifically, most of the incumbent’s work will be devoted to supervising the investigation, negotiation, and litigation of matters involving the unnecessary segregation or the risk of unnecessary segregation of individuals with disabilities in institutions. Most of the work involves allegations of patterns or practices of unlawful conduct.

Northwest Immigrant Rights Project Seeking Fall Intern/Extern, Due 8/7

NWIRP’s Seattle Office services low-income immigrants and refugees in Western Washington. The office provides direct legal representation, referrals to pro bono attorneys, pro se assistance, and workshops on immigration matters ranging from asylum, citizenship, family petitions, and protections for immigrant children and victims of crimes.

The internship is open to first, second, and third year law students. Applicants should have excellent written and oral communication skills, an interest in immigration law, an ability to work in a diverse and fast-paced work environment, and a commitment to advancing and defending the legal rights of low-income immigrants and refugees. Applicants proficient in Spanish are strongly preferred. The internship is unpaid, but NWIRP will work with applicants to secure outside funding or academic credit.

The Center for Reproductive Rights (the Center) is the premier global legal organization dedicated to advancing women’s reproductive health, self-determination, and dignity. The Center’s U.S. Policy and Advocacy (USPA) department is looking for an enthusiastic, resourceful and highly organized law student intern with a commitment to reproductive rights issues to engage in a variety of projects related to federal policy analysis and nonprofit advocacy. This internship will provide the successful candidate with experience in the day-to day operations of a dynamic in-house federal policy team, including legislative analysis and drafting, coalition advocacy, and translating legal and legislative language into persuasive policy documents.

The internship is part-time, and will begin in September 2015 and end in November 2015. Exact schedule is flexible according to the student’s academic schedule, but preference will be given to candidates that are available for a minimum of 15 hours/week spread over multiple days. King County Superior Court Seeking On-Call Bailiffs, Paid Position

Temporary, at-will employee who is employed at the pleasure of the hiring authority, King County Superior Court. The position is short term in duration, 910 hours or less in a calendar year. Work is sporadic and not guaranteed. Employee will cover in court for absent bailiffs when they are on leave.

Duties: Assist the assigned judge, act as a liaison between the court and other agencies, jurisdictions, jurors observers, court staff visitors and the general public. Handle sensitive, confidential and potentially volatile situations. Maintain database of case management. Ensures confidential and direct support to facilitate the operation of the Court.

Skills required: Ability to work in high pressure environment in a calm, professional manner. Ability to maintain confidential information on matters before the court. Skill in organizational techniques including prioritizing multiple tasks while adapting to frequent and sudden changes in workload demand. Must be able to work both independently and as a member of a team.

Rate of pay is $27.61 per hour, with 40 hours of paid training provided prior to assignments. This on-call position is not benefits eligible.

Specific substantive elements of the program include: 1) legal research, analysis and writing in a variety of subject areas, particularly energy regulation and deregulation, antitrust, transmission access, legislative representation, hydroelectric licensing, telecommunications and transportation; 2) drafting memos, briefs and other pleadings, including before federal and state administrative agencies and federal and state courts; 3) client contact and participation in case strategy discussions; 4) assisting with discovery and trial preparation; 5) monitoring legislation in the areas of energy, environment and transporation; and 6) assisting on pro bono matters. U.S. DOJ Civil Rights Division, Educational Opportunities Section Seeking Volunteer Legal Intern for Summer 2015, Due 3/1/15

The U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, Educational Opportunities Section, seeks full-time (40 hours/week) volunteer legal interns for summer 2015. Summer interns generally work for 10 weeks, but split summers (6 week minimum) may be considered on a case-by-case basis.  Students who will be second- or third-year law students, or enrolled in a graduate law program, in the 2015-2016 school year will be considered.

Interns work closely with Section attorneys in cases and investigations involving discrimination against students on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, and disability in public schools, colleges, and universities. Assignments typically include legal research and writing, assisting attorneys with investigations and compliance monitoring, assisting with fact development (including participating in witness interviews), and preparing for court appearances, depositions, and settlement negotiations. Interested interns may participate in one of the Division-wide working groups, including the LGBTI Working Group, Indian Working Group, and Status Verification Working Group, as well as inter-agency working groups such as the Supportive School Discipline Initiative and the Federal Partners in Bullying Prevention.

The Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program is a flagship leadership development program at the entry level for advanced degree candidates. It was created more than three decades ago by Executive Order and has gone through many changes over the years. The Program attracts and selects the best candidates possible, but is really designed with a more narrow focus – developing a cadre of potential government leaders.  The PMF Program inculcates a lasting bond as well as a spirit of public service, ultimately encouraging and leading to a career in the government.

Wednesday, October 8 from 1:30-3:30pm (Eastern Time):  A question and answer session where applicants may submit questions regarding the 2015 PMF application cycle.

The Senior Deputy Ombudsman investigates and seeks resolution of jurisdictional citizen complaints about King County government operations and alleged ethics code violations, and employee reports of improper governmental action or retaliation. The duties of the Senior Deputy Ombudsman for Rural and Unincorporated Area Affairs will emphasize land use-related issues and complaints. The Rural Ombudsman is generally sole or lead investigator on complaints by property owners involving the departments of Permitting and Environmental Review, Natural Resources and Parks, Transportation-Roads Division, and Environmental Health. The position reports directly to the Ombudsman-Director.

Minimum Qualifications: The position requires graduation from an accredited four-year institution of higher learning with coursework in public administration, political science, law, business, communications, or other fields relevant to this position plus four years of progressively responsible research and investigative work, issue analysis, land use, public policy formulation, or code compliance, preferably in the government sector; OR any equivalent combination of relevant education, experience and training. Formal training and certifications in conducting investigations, interviewing techniques, dispute resolution, and public presentations are desirable.

Interns gain a unique and exciting view of the work and mission of the Division. Interns will assist Division attorneys and/or specialists in a variety of assignments, including conducting legal and factual research, preparing documents and exhibits, interviewing witnesses, summarizing depositions, analyzing records, and other case-related work. Interns in the Policy and Strategy Section, as well as interns in some other sections, will assist the Division with a full range of civil rights policy work, including legislative proposals, policy development, and engaging civil rights stakeholders.
