The Natural Resources Division of the Washington State Attorney General’s Office seeks an experienced attorney with an interest in natural resource management, environmental, contract, and real property law.  This is a project position only funded through June 2017.  The position represents the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Aquatic Resources Division, the manager of more than 2.6 million acres of state-owned aquatic lands.  This area of practice will involve understanding and applying the state’s Aquatic Lands statutes in RCW Title 79; the State Environmental Policy Act; general principles of property law, including landlord-tenant law; federal law pertaining to watercourse boundaries, navigation, and commerce; environmental law; and the common law pertaining to the Public Trust Doctrine.  The position involves client advice and diverse litigation in state and federal courts and administrative forums.

The Center’s Global Legal Program (GLP) is looking for an enthusiastic, resourceful and highly organized law student intern with a commitment to reproductive rights issues to engage in a variety of legal research and writing projects related to GLP’s fact-finding, advocacy, and litigation in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and at the United Nations. Eastside Legal Assistance Program Seeking Family Law Intern, Due 12/22

The Eastside Legal Assistance Program (“ELAP”) is looking for a law student to intern in our Domestic Violence Legal Program (“DVLP”) for the Winter Quarter 2016.

ELAP is a non-profit organization that provides no-cost civil legal services to survivors of domestic violence, including related family law issues (such as custody, parenting plans, spousal support, etc.), throughout King County, Washington, and to low-income residents of East and Northeast King County.  The intern will work with staff attorneys in the representation of clients, including providing assistance to draft pleadings and to interview clients, as well as to research points of law.  By the conclusion of the internship, it is expected that the intern will craft a legal memorandum that can be used as a writing sample.

This position will provide experience in practical legal skills such as client interviewing, legal issue spotting, case development, and working with low-income clients.  In addition, the intern will learn substantive and procedural aspects to family law practice, with an emphasis on representing domestic violence survivors. This position is unpaid but can be sponsored for academic credit if available through the student’s school.

The Center for Public Service Law at the UW School of Law is the hub of public interest and social justice activities and career support at the law school. The communications assistant will provide support to the CPSL with its online outreach and marketing primarily through its blog (commongooduw.org) and weekly online newsletter. The blog provides the latest local, national and international news, announcements, events, job and internships postings related to public service law. It is updated three times per week. The weekly newsletter recaps the last week’s blog postings and directs its over 700+ recipients to the blog.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Organize and queue up prospective blog postings received via email by CPSL Director into Jobs/Internships, Announcements and Events.
  2. Consult with Director which items should be prioritized and included for each blog post prior to publishing.
  3. Using the Word Press blogging platform, post pre-approved Jobs/Internships on Mondays; Announcements on Wednesdays, and Events on Fridays following the pre-determined style, design and template of the blog.
  4. Using Campaign Monitor email marketing platform, compile the blog headlines and links from the last week and send newsletter every Monday to 700+ recipients.
  5. Other job duties as assigned.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience with online marketing including Word Press, Campaign Monitor, LinkedIn and Facebook
  2. Experience with MS Publisher

While our annual Conference and Career Fair has attracted employers and law students from across the country for twenty years, there are some who are unable to attend the in-person event due to time and/or financial constraints. We are excited to pilot the Equal Justice Works 2015 Virtual Conference and Career Fair to connect more students and employers!

The virtual event will take place from 12 – 3 p.m. EDT on Friday, October 30. Registration is free and open through October 27.

Employers are registering now and will continue to register and post positions over the next few weeks. Registered employers include: California Appellate Project, Death Penalty Litigation Clinic, and Public Advocates.

As this is a pilot event, it will have a smaller number of attendees than our in-person Career Fair. We hope to grow the virtual event in the future.

Northwest Immigrant Rights Project Seeking Spanish Bilingual Immigrant Youth Attorney, Full Consideration to Applicants Who Apply by 11/8

The Northwest Immigrant Rights Project (NWIRP) seeks a Spanish-speaking bilingual attorney to provide community outreach, education and direct representation to individuals eligible for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and to provide other services to immigrant youth and their families.

The staff attorney will work closely with other staff members and community partners in the region in conducting outreach and community education, and providing individual consultations and representation to persons who may be eligible for the DACA program. The attorney will provide legal assistance to community members through: (1) individual consultations; (2) self-help assistance in the form of community workshops and legal clinics; and (3) direct representation in priority cases. The staff attorney may also be assigned work relating to other immigration matters. This position will be based at NWIRP’s Seattle office. The attorney must have a car and driver’s license, and must be willing to travel around the State in order to conduct community education and workshops. Prisoners Legal Services of New York Seeking Fall Law Intern, Due 8/15

Prisoners’ Legal Services of New York (PLS) is seeking fall interns for our regional offices in Albany and Buffalo for 2015.  PLS is a nonprofit legal services organization, founded in 1976. PLS provides civil legal services to indigent prisoners in New York State prisons, in cases where appointed counsel is not available.

Under the supervision of experienced attorneys, student interns will respond to a variety of prisoners’ letters, review disciplinary hearings, draft administrative appeals and assist in state and federal litigation, among other work assignments. Students will also have the opportunity to interview clients in prison. Limited work-study is available, but students are also strongly encouraged to inquire with their Career Services Office about funding for public interest positions.

The Board of Trustees of the Spokane County Bar Association is accepting applications for the position of Executive Director.  Duties include overall management of the SCBA and Volunteer Lawyers Program operations, hiring and supervision of a staff of 5-6, working with the SCBA and VLP Board of Trustees, managing finances for both SCBA and VLP, organizing SCBA/VLP membership events and functions, and representing the SCBA membership at events and in the community.

Qualified applicants must have strong management and organizational skills as well as being an excellent communicator.  Applicants must have a demonstrated ability to work under pressure and multitask.  Bookkeeping/accounting experience and a working knowledge of the legal system or legal assistant/paralegal experience preferred.  Grant writing experience is desirable.  Some travel is required.

Due May 20: National Center for Youth Law – Executive Direction Position

The new Executive Director will serve as the organization’s principal strategist as well as its leader in other respects including management of the organization. Working in collaboration with the Board of Directors and staff, the Executive Director will work to advance NCYL’s mission.

The Executive Director will represent NCYL in a variety of diverse communities and settings, and must be able to navigate relationships confidently, gracefully, and respectfully. The new Executive Director will be charged with establishing and maintaining partnerships with funders and other stakeholders key to NCYL’s operational success. The selected law clerks will be integrated into the Division’s investigative and litigation teams. Due May 22: Texas RioGrande Legal Aid Law Student Internship

Established in 1970, Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA) is a nonprofit organization that provides free civil legal services to low-income and disadvantaged clients in a 68-county service area that covers the southwestern third of the state of Texas, including the entire Texas-Mexico border region. TRLA also serves migrant and seasonal farm workers throughout Texas and six southern states (Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee and Kentucky). The 68 county service area includes the cities of San Antonio, Austin, Victoria, Corpus Christi, Laredo, El Paso and the Rio Grande Valley.

The TRLA-EL Paso branch office just received a grant from State Bar of Texas’s Labor and Employment Law Section to support a labor/employment law school intern this summer.

This internship will focus on labor and employment law in the legal aid context. Texas RioGrande Legal Aid’s office in El Paso, Texas serves a large low-income, mostly Spanish-speaking population. We provide a variety of legal services to our clients, including housing and family law services, in addition to hosting a Homeless Legal Clinic. An intern would have the opportunity to work on some of these non- labor and employment matters, but the majority of the intern’s time would focus on labor and employment cases, outreach, and research.

Our office handles a variety of employment matters. We handle employment discrimination cases; employment disputes involving pay, hours, classification, and other matters; and complex, multi-party farmworker cases involving the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Migrant and Seasonal Agricultural Worker Protection Act, and various state common law claims. The intern that comes to our office this summer can expect to participate in various federal cases on behalf of farmworkers, who face specialized and fascinating employment issues, in addition to employment discrimination cases and other employment matters that may come up. The intern will also participate in outreach to the farmworker community on their employment rights.

This grant requires an intern to commit to working 40 hours per week for 10 weeks. The intern will be paid *$5,000.00* for the summer (this goes a long way in El Paso). The intern will be required to prepare a final report to submit to the State Bar of Texas’s Labor and Employment Law Section, which is sponsoring this grant. Spanish proficiency is preferred.
