The Amara Legal Center is a legal services organization dedicated to providing free legal services to U.S. citizen survivors of sex trafficking and to sex workers in the DC metro area and is currently seeking an intern for the Spring 2016.

Intern duties include: Familiarizing him or herself with the law of expungement, custody, restraining orders, victim advocacy and public benefits in DC, Maryland and Virginia. All training materials will be given to the intern and the intern will receive intensive training on the areas of the law and the civil law process from Amara’s Director of Legal Services. After training, assisting Amara staff attorneys and pro-bono attorneys in general legal research for expungement of records cases, civil cases, criminal defense cases, and victim-witness advocacy. Central America is being hit with an epidemic of Chronic Kidney Disease of nontraditional causes (CKDnT). The population most acutely affected by the epidemic are the sugarcane cutters working in the lowlands of Western Nicaragua. Recent research shows that there is a strong relationship between the sickness and work conditions. Research also shows that many of the same work conditions linked to CKDnT are also in violation of domestic and international laws protecting worker health and safety. For this reason, Profesionales para la Auditoría Social y Empresarial (PASE) has opened a Legal Services Office in Chinandega, Nicaragua focused on serving sugarcane workers, ex-sugarcane workers and their families. The PASE Legal Services Office grew out of a collaboration with La Isla Foundation (LIF), a non-profit organization aimed at tackling CKDnT.

Judge George Bowden Seeks Law Clerk, Open Until Filled

Judge George Bowden presides at the Snohomish County Superior Courthouse in Everett, WA.  The law clerk will stay for a minimum of 1 year and a maximum of 2 years.  The work week is typically 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM Monday through Friday with 10 paid holidays annually.  When the employing judge is on vacation, the law clerk is on “call-in” status to fill-in for other clerks on an as-needed basis. The clerk position also has up to two weeks of paid vacation annually.  Duties include administrative and ministerial duties throughout the week, handling the judge’s schedule and all incoming phone calls, review of legal briefs and preparation of written legal memoranda when the judge is assigned to the civil motions calendar (typically four or more weeks a year).  Medical and dental benefits are provided in addition to the salary of $48,741.

Bertha Fellowship is a two year fellowship for emerging lawyers (0-2 years out of law school) who are interested in gaining both practical experience working on CCR cases and a theoretical understanding of how legal advocacy can create social change. CCR will host four Bertha Fellows, starting in September 2016. This fellowship position requires a two-year commitment from September 2016 to September 2018.

The Fellows will be assigned to work alongside lawyers in one of our three docket areas: (1) Guantanamo Global Justice Initiative; (2) Government Misconduct/Racial Justice; and (3) International Human Rights.  During the course of the fellowship, there may also be opportunities to do work which straddles different dockets.

Washington Journal of Environmental Law & Policy (WJELP) Hosting First Annual Symposium on Ocean Acidification and Coastal Health, Now Accepting Paper Submissions

The Washington Journal of Environmental Law & Policy (WJELP) invites submissions for papers focused on ocean acidification. Partnering with the UW Law Environmental Law Program, WJELP will be hosting an Ocean Acidification Symposium on November 6, 2015. Accepted papers will be featured at the symposium and later printed in an edited volume. Submitted papers should relate to the growing need for law and policy addressing ocean acidification, strategies to manage ocean acidification at various scales (local, regional, national and global), and other related topics (using ocean acidification to target CO2 emissions, sustainable aquaculture, land-based sources of water pollution, etc.). We also welcome proposals for symposium speakers. Paper submissions due by October 16, 2015.

World Health Organization Releases New Publication on Sexual Health, Human Rights and the Law

Sexual health today is widely understood as a state of physical, emotional, mental and social wellbeing in relation to sexuality. It encompasses not only certain aspects of reproductive health – such as being able to control one’s fertility through access to contraception and abortion, and being free from sexually transmitted infections (STIs), sexual dysfunction and sequelae related to sexual violence or female genital mutilation – but also, the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence. Indeed, it has become clear that human sexuality includes many different forms of behaviour and expression, and that the recognition of the diversity of sexual behaviour and expression contributes to people’s overall sense of well-being and health.

Judges Rebuke Limits on Wiping Out Student Loans

[…] The judge, Jim D. Pappas, in his concurring opinion for the bankruptcy appellate panel decision in the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, said the analysis used “to determine the existence of an undue hardship is too narrow, no longer reflects reality and should be revised.”

He added: “It would seem that in this new, different environment, in determining whether repayment of a student loan constitutes an undue hardship, a bankruptcy court should be afforded flexibility to consider all relevant facts about the debtor and the subject loans.” But the current standard, he wrote, “does not allow it.”

EEOC Bans Discrimination Against Gays in Workplaces

In a historic decision, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has ruled that all job discrimination based on sexual orientation is a form of sex discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

The 3-2 decision, dated July 16, does what Congress and most courts so far have refused to do: ban discrimination against gays in the workplace. Until now only a handful of states and municipalities have done so.

The EEOC foreshadowed its decision in a field memo last February saying that workers are protected under Title VII from discrimination based on sexual orientation as well as gender identity.

EQUAL JUSTICE WORKS/JUSTICE AMERICORPS -Legal Fellowship Opportunity

The Equal Justice Works/justice AmeriCorps Legal Fellow will work full-time at the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area and will be responsible for providing full-scope direct representation to unaccompanied immigrant children in Immigration Court proceedings and related proceedings before U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services and in State Court. The term of the fellowship is one year, with the possibility of renewal.

SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF NEW YORK, OFFICE OF PRO SE LITIGATION – Pro Se Law Clerk

The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York is hiring one pro se law clerk to serve a two-year term (subject to available funding) for the Office of Pro Se Litigation. The Office of Pro Se Litigation serves the District and Magistrate Judges of the Court in the handling of all cases filed by individuals who are representing themselves in court. It provides legal support to the Court’s judges to assist them in managing their pro se docket (which accounts for approximately 25% of the Court’s civil filings). Pro se law clerks review initial pro se filings and draft legal memoranda and proposed orders and decisions for judicial officers. Pro se law clerks report directly to the Chief Counsel of the Office of Pro Se Litigation.

In addition to providing substantive support to judicial officers, pro se law clerks work on other matters handled by the Office of Pro Se Litigation, including preparing forms, manuals, and other materials to provide assistance to pro se litigants.

The Opportunity Agenda seeks candidates for the Robert L. Carter fellowship, for a two-year term beginning no later than September of 2015 for its New York office. The Opportunity Agenda is a social justice communication lab that collaborates with social justice leaders to move hearts and minds, driving lasting policy and culture change. We amplify the inspirational voice of opportunity through a combination of communication expertise, creative engagement and research.

Working under the supervision of the Director of Law and Advocacy, and in coordination with other program and development staff, this position’s responsibilities include:

The Fellow will participate in legal research and legal advocacy; work with coalitions on framing and messaging concerns; and collaborate with local and national public interest organizations and policymakers on policy and communications efforts. The Fellow will focus on promoting equal opportunity and protecting human rights in such sectors as economic opportunity and immigration and criminal justice policy. Activities are likely to include conducting research and writing legal and policy briefs; helping to create communications strategies and tools; and engaging in policy advocacy, often in partnership with coalition allies. This work will be done in close collaboration with The Opportunity Agenda’s legal, research, and communications staff, providing opportunities for social science research and media experience, as well as legal work.

The Access to Justice Board’s Conference Planning Committee is now accepting proposals for 2015 Access to Justice Conference workshops.  This year’s conference will focus on solutions to address structural impediments to equitable justice and meet the needs of our growing client community.  We encourage and invite you to submit a 90 minute workshop proposal for consideration by the committee.  Proposals should be consistent with the criteria outlined in the attached document.  All workshops will take place on Saturday, June 13, 2015 at the Wenatchee Convention Center.

Proposals must be received by 5 p.m., Friday, January 23, 2015. Submit proposals using the attached form to Terra Nevitt, terran@wsba.org. Electronic submissions only please. Washington State Association for Justice Offering Bar Preparation Scholarship for Diversity and Women, Apply Now for Exam Dates in July 2015/February 2016

To help achieve this endeavor, WSAJ has pledged scholarship monies to assist diverse individuals in covering the tuition cost of a bar preparation course. Diversity refers to individuals who self-identify with those groups historically discriminated against and or those groups that are historically under-represented in the legal profession based on disability, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. Scholarship recipients will be selected based on several criteria, including (but not limited to) demonstrated interest and intent to practice in the plaintiff’s bar, financial need, academic achievements, extracurricular and community activities, and life experiences. No single criteria is determinative.

Lawyers Fostering Independence Offering Free CLE This Friday

Lawyers Fostering Independence (LFI) provides free civil legal services to young people who have been in foster, group, or kinship care at some point while growing up. With the help of volunteer attorneys, our mission is to improve outcomes for former foster youth by providing them with access to legal services – services that can mitigate the specific adversities experienced by these youth who have been raised in our care.

Our all-day training is on December 5th from 9:00am-3:30pm at Garvey Schubert Barer.

The morning will consist of an introduction to LFI, hearing from former foster youth about their experiences and needs, and our Trauma-Informed Legal Representation CLE (1.5 ethics credits pending). The afternoon will include two training sessions: one on credit and debt issues and the other on sealing juvenile records and vacating adult records. 1.25 CLE credits pending for each of these sessions.

  • Jacqueline McMurtrie is an Associate Professor at the University of Washington School of Law and the founder and Director of the Innocence Project Northwest (IPNW). The only resource of its kind in Washington State, IPNW’s mission is to exonerate the innocent, remedy causes of wrongful conviction and offer law students an outstanding education. Since 1997, IPNW has obtained exonerations of thirteen men and women who collectively served over 90 years in prison for crimes they did not commit.
  • Fernanda Torres is a Staff Attorney and Volunteer Coordinator at the Innocence Project Northwest (IPNW). She helps oversee the screening and review of applications for assistance and leads the litigation of non-DNA cases. She recruits and supervises IPNW volunteers. Prior to joining IPNW, Ms. Torres practiced criminal defense as a public defender and in private practice.

Significant change, whether individual or within an organization can be challenging. Even when we want to change, it doesn’t happen easily. I recently heard implicit bias compared to a habit, albeit a bad one. Think about how hard it is to change a habit…

A couple of months ago, my brother in law was coming over to my house to pick up his dog after work. We’d talked earlier and he reminded me to leave the front door open for him. Then he sent me a text about 15 minutes before I was leaving as a second reminder. “Leave the door unlocked, leave the door unlocked,” I chanted in my head as I gathered my things to go. Then I went through my mental list of what I needed to bring with me, made sure I had it all, walked out, locked the door and left. His poor dog was locked inside.

Even though I wanted to change that habit and was focusing a lot of mental energy on doing something different, the moment I got distracted, I forgot and went back to what I do every day.

Now imagine there are a bunch of individuals trying to change an organization. But they’ve all learned and practiced habits of stereotypes, biases, and institutional oppression for years. Some have even gotten rewarded for this behavior by being told they’re a “good fit” at the company and getting promoted. Some are the founders of the organization or have worked there so long they see any mention of needed change as a personal affront. Others have been going along to get along, trying not to make waves by bringing up experiences of marginalization. They may even be telling themselves they imagined it or making excuses for oppressive behavior such as, “I know he didn’t mean it that way.”

Want to help families of children with disabilities? Come learn about pro bono guardianship opportunities with the Washington Medical Legal Partnership.

The Washington Medical-Legal Partnership (MLP) is an innovative collaboration between medical providers, social workers and attorneys to address the unmet legal needs and improve the health of vulnerable patients and families by integrating legal care into comprehensive healthcare. MLP’s partnership includes Northwest Justice Project, Harborview Medical Center, Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic, Sea Mar Community Health Centers and Seattle Children’s Hospital.

MLP is currently in need of attorneys to advise and counsel families of children with disabilities about preparing for the transition to adulthood, including offering pro bono legal assistance for guardianships. A guardian, usually the parent, is a person appointed by a court to manage the affairs of a person who is incapacitated, often used to ensure continuity of care for a young adults suffering severe mental or physical disability. Once MLP has completed an initial assessment, the family is referred to our pro bono partner.

The pro bono attorney will meet with the family to help them to navigate the judicial process. Guardianships involve filings and a court appearance, but attorneys who do not regularly litigate should find this pro bono opportunity manageable, especially with the support of more experienced attorneys who have already completed guardianship proceedings. The time commitment for a guardianship case can vary depending on the experience of the attorney, case complexity and other factors, but should generally require about 15-20 hours over a 4-6 month period.

This process will be discussed in more detail at the Q&A, where you will hear from MLP and some of the pro bono attorneys about guardianship cases they have handled. Please join us!

The classroom is the place where a child’s vision first becomes essential. In American elementary schools, teachers and administrators rarely have the necessary information related to vision abilities of children that are so critical to reading. Currently, access to assessment and support depends on the size and quality of schools, educational programs, and intervention strategies and availability of support. Medical providers and others screening for vision problems often rely on the same eye chart that the school screenings use, which checks only for distance vision. New approaches to vision assessment and therapy – and the use of technologies to provide better access to data about these issues — are being developed. How do we ensure that ALL children have access to these advances? Methods and strategies to improve outcomes for students with vision problems will be a result of sharing knowledge and developing partnerships among the many stakeholders – which is the focus of this symposium.
