How Will YOU  Fund your Public Service Internship this Summer?

At UW Law we are lucky to have a powerhouse student organization like PILA and a supportive administration which fundraises tons of money to help support summer public service internships. Unfortunately, there are always more deserving applicants than there is funding. So, are you going to put all of your eggs in your PILA basket or are you going to do some research and apply for many other funding sources that are out there? Hint: the latter.

Check out all the great summer funding resources on the Center for Public Service Law’s quick  reference guide (under summer funding towards the bottom of the page). These include labor and employment specific funding, LGBT rights funding, civil legal aid funding, human rights funding, international funding, and new for this year Latina/o advocacy  funding (just to name a few). Application deadlines tend to range between December through April with the bulk due in March/April giving you time to secure your summer internship. We highlight some of the most common sources of summer funding that UW Law students have applied for and obtained. But wait, there’s more! Also check out the great resources compiled by our friends at PSJD here and here. Investing a few hours in research and applications will pay huge dividends (literally). Don’t miss out!

Racial bias has declined drastically in the United States over the past few decades. And yet, recent reaction to the tragic events in Ferguson, Missouri, suggests race continues to color our opinions, with both blacks and whites holding firm assumptions that their counterparts completely reject.

It’s something of a conundrum, until you consider implicit beliefs—the automatic thoughts and feelings that arise when one looks at an image of someone of another race. While these often operate below our level of consciousness, they shape our views of society and opinions on such policy issues as affirmative action, voter ID laws, and whether the justice system is genuinely just.

Fortunately, new research has documented a surprisingly simple way to short-circuit these knee-jerk negative associations. The key, according to Central Michigan University psychologists Adam Lueke and Bryan Gibson, is mindfulness.

Whites have “quicker response times for words that represent good things when paired with white faces than with black faces, and quicker response times for words that represent bad things when paired with black faces than white faces.” Continue reading here.

Attention Pro Bono Attorneys! Opportunity to Support Homeless Advocacy.

SHARE is a homeless shelter in Seattle served by the Homeless Experience Legal Protection program. Presently, two matters are of huge concern to its community, as to which it is seeking pro bono legal representation. One concerns Nickelsville, an independent encampment of homeless people that is following all the legal obligations put upon it by the City of Seattle & etc. They are not receiving the same police services as other encampments, shelters and transitional housing projects and it is jeopardizing their safety and future. SHARE needs to figure out a way to get SPD to provide its residents the same support they provide others. The second issue concerns the complete defunding of SHARE – the county’s largest shelter provider – by King County Government. SHARE is also by far the most cost effective shelter outfit per bed night. SHARE would like to challenge the County’s defunding on numerous grounds – procedural, legal, common sense and political. This defunding isn’t something we can just let sit – the County Council is going to have to reconsider the whole thing sometime. The Access to Justice Board’s Conference Planning Committee is now accepting proposals for 2015 Access to Justice Conference workshops.  This year’s conference will focus on solutions to address structural impediments to equitable justice and meet the needs of our growing client community.  We encourage and invite you to submit a 90 minute workshop proposal for consideration by the committee.  Proposals should be consistent with the criteria outlined in the attached document.  All workshops will take place on Saturday, June 13, 2015 at the Wenatchee Convention Center.

Proposals must be received by 5 p.m., Friday, January 23, 2015. Submit proposals using the attached form to Terra Nevitt, terran@wsba.org. Electronic submissions only please. The conference planning committee will select the workshops and plenary sessions. You will be notified as soon as the final decisions have been made whether or not your proposal was selected. Washington State Association for Justice Offering Bar Preparation Scholarship for Diversity and Women, Apply Now for Exam Dates in July 2015/February 2016

To help achieve this endeavor, WSAJ has pledged scholarship monies to assist diverse individuals in covering the tuition cost of a bar preparation course. Diversity refers to individuals who self-identify with those groups historically discriminated against and or those groups that are historically under-represented in the legal profession based on disability, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. Scholarship recipients will be selected based on several criteria, including (but not limited to) demonstrated interest and intent to practice in the plaintiff’s bar, financial need, academic achievements, extracurricular and community activities, and life experiences. No single criteria is determinative.

Lawyers Fostering Independence Offering Free CLE This Friday

Lawyers Fostering Independence (LFI) provides free civil legal services to young people who have been in foster, group, or kinship care at some point while growing up. With the help of volunteer attorneys, our mission is to improve outcomes for former foster youth by providing them with access to legal services – services that can mitigate the specific adversities experienced by these youth who have been raised in our care.

Our all-day training is on December 5th from 9:00am-3:30pm at Garvey Schubert Barer.

The morning will consist of an introduction to LFI, hearing from former foster youth about their experiences and needs, and our Trauma-Informed Legal Representation CLE (1.5 ethics credits pending). The afternoon will include two training sessions: one on credit and debt issues and the other on sealing juvenile records and vacating adult records. 1.25 CLE credits pending for each of these sessions.

A light breakfast and lunch will be provided.

  • Jacqueline McMurtrie is an Associate Professor at the University of Washington School of Law and the founder and Director of the Innocence Project Northwest (IPNW). The only resource of its kind in Washington State, IPNW’s mission is to exonerate the innocent, remedy causes of wrongful conviction and offer law students an outstanding education. Since 1997, IPNW has obtained exonerations of thirteen men and women who collectively served over 90 years in prison for crimes they did not commit.
  • Fernanda Torres is a Staff Attorney and Volunteer Coordinator at the Innocence Project Northwest (IPNW). She helps oversee the screening and review of applications for assistance and leads the litigation of non-DNA cases. She recruits and supervises IPNW volunteers. Prior to joining IPNW, Ms. Torres practiced criminal defense as a public defender and in private practice.

Pro Bono Opportunity with the King County Bar Association’s Housing Justice Project and Family Law Program

Significant change, whether individual or within an organization can be challenging. Even when we want to change, it doesn’t happen easily. I recently heard implicit bias compared to a habit, albeit a bad one. Think about how hard it is to change a habit…

A couple of months ago, my brother in law was coming over to my house to pick up his dog after work. We’d talked earlier and he reminded me to leave the front door open for him. Then he sent me a text about 15 minutes before I was leaving as a second reminder. “Leave the door unlocked, leave the door unlocked,” I chanted in my head as I gathered my things to go. Then I went through my mental list of what I needed to bring with me, made sure I had it all, walked out, locked the door and left. His poor dog was locked inside.

Even though I wanted to change that habit and was focusing a lot of mental energy on doing something different, the moment I got distracted, I forgot and went back to what I do every day.

Now imagine there are a bunch of individuals trying to change an organization. But they’ve all learned and practiced habits of stereotypes, biases, and institutional oppression for years. Some have even gotten rewarded for this behavior by being told they’re a “good fit” at the company and getting promoted. Some are the founders of the organization or have worked there so long they see any mention of needed change as a personal affront. Others have been going along to get along, trying not to make waves by bringing up experiences of marginalization. They may even be telling themselves they imagined it or making excuses for oppressive behavior such as, “I know he didn’t mean it that way.”

U.S. DOJ Civil Rights Division, Educational Opportunities Section Seeking Volunteer Legal Intern for Summer 2015, Due 3/1/15

The U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, Educational Opportunities Section, seeks full-time (40 hours/week) volunteer legal interns for summer 2015. Summer interns generally work for 10 weeks, but split summers (6 week minimum) may be considered on a case-by-case basis.  Students who will be second- or third-year law students, or enrolled in a graduate law program, in the 2015-2016 school year will be considered.

Interns work closely with Section attorneys in cases and investigations involving discrimination against students on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, and disability in public schools, colleges, and universities. Assignments typically include legal research and writing, assisting attorneys with investigations and compliance monitoring, assisting with fact development (including participating in witness interviews), and preparing for court appearances, depositions, and settlement negotiations. Interested interns may participate in one of the Division-wide working groups, including the LGBTI Working Group, Indian Working Group, and Status Verification Working Group, as well as inter-agency working groups such as the Supportive School Discipline Initiative and the Federal Partners in Bullying Prevention.

Immigrant Families Advocacy Project (IFAP) Hiring Summer/Fall Quarter Fellow, Paid Position, Due TODAY

The IFAP Fellow would have the opportunity to work with attorneys at NWIRP, connect with the greater legal community in the area, and gain some valuable project management experience.  The responsibilities of the Fellow will continue through the Fall 2014 quarter, and Fellows are encouraged to remain involved in IFAP on the Steering Committee even after all tasks have been completed.

To this end it campaigns on a range of legal issues but also offers some basic, free legal services to the public.  FLAC currently concentrates its work on four main areas: Legal Aid, Social Welfare, Credit & Debt and Public Interest Law.

If you are still looking for an internship/externship, this would be a great opportunity. Students interested in receiving externship credits would be able to do so, as we have faculty available to conduct a site visit. You could potentially team this up with the KU/UW Law study abroad in Ireland. You may also seek financial aid for your travel costs to Ireland.

The Health Policy Associate supports the Children’s Alliance’s goal to ensure that all children in Washington have access to the health coverage and care they need to grow and thrive. The Children’s Alliance is guided by a deep commitment to enhancing equity and erasing health disparities faced by children in low income families and children of color. Working with the Health Policy Director, this position will combine public policy analysis, research, and advocacy. Focus areas are maximizing the benefits of coverage through Apple Health for Kids, and effectively implementing the Affordable Care Act in a manner that will improve children’s health.

This 25-37.5 hour per week position is based in our Seattle office. Ability to travel and work a flexible schedule is required. Health, dental, and other benefits included. The position reports to the Health Policy Director and is a member of the Children’s Alliance policy staff. Salary is based on a full time salary of $42,000/yr. Established by the Washington Supreme Court in 1994, The Washington State Access to Justice (ATJ) Board, through its justice system partners and standing committees, works to achieve equal access to the civil justice system for those facing economic and other significant barriers. To assist in the fulfillment of this mission, the Washington State Bar Association (WSBA) is seeking an ATJ Board Manager who shares in the fundamental belief that, “Justice involves the determination and realization of legal needs, rights and responsibilities and the fair resolution of disputes.”   Functioning as a driving force in support of this effort, the ATJ Board Manager works to preserve and protect the integrity of the ATJ Board and its capacity to work effectively and independently in service of the mission and objectives that created the ATJ Board, and consistent with WSBA policies and the ATJ Board-WSBA Memorandum of Understanding.
