The Northwest Office of Earthjustice is seeking applicants for an Associate Attorney to begin work in the fall of 2016 or sooner.

The Northwest Office opened in 1987 to enable Earthjustice to take a more active role in preserving the unique natural resources and environment of the Pacific Northwest.  Since that time, the Northwest office has undertaken campaigns to protect old growth forests, promote salmon recovery, improve water quality, protect Puget Sound and the communities that depend on it, stop coal-fired power plants, protect farmworkers and their families from pesticides, and respond to climate change, among other things.

Although the primary focus of the Northwest office is representing environmental and citizens’ groups in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, we often take cases with national and international scope.  For example, the Northwest office is involved in cases seeking to stop coal exports to Asia and transport of crude oil to ports along the entire west coast as part of its effort to reduce reliance on dirty fossil fuels. We also have led nationwide litigation to protect 58.5 million acres of undeveloped, roadless areas on our National Forests.  We frequently work in close partnership with Native American Tribes and fence-line communities.

Women Enabled International (WEI) is now accepting applications for a consulting Legal Advisor—Standards and Implementation Tool. The position is for a 12-month part-time (20 hours per week) consulting contract, and is available immediately.

Overview:

The Legal Advisor—Standards and Implementation Tool will take the lead in developing a Standards and Implementation Tool, in collaboration with other members of the Women Enabled International (WEI) team, in support of the UNFPA project on Youth and Disability: Ensuring Social Inclusion and Gender Equality to Address Discrimination and Gender-Based Violence. The Standards and Implementation Tool will provide guidance to key stakeholders engaged in developing and implementing service provision in the areas of sexual and reproductive health and rights and gender-based and sexual violence for women and young people with disabilities. The development of the Standards and Implementation Tool will be based on the following:

  • Research and analysis of international human rights laws, policies and guidance, specifically emphasizing parameters for service provision in the areas of sexual and reproductive health and gender-based violence for youth and women with disabilities.
  • Review of and incorporation of the findings from the forthcoming UNFPA Global Study on Youth and Disability.
  • Global consultation with key stakeholders and experts on women and youth with disabilities and sexual and reproductive health and gender-based violence, through both online consultations and a global convening.

Duties include:

  • Research and analyze international human rights laws, policies, and guidance;
  • Develop a Discussion Paper and draft outline, laying out the purpose, scope, and content of the Standards and Implementation tool, as well as a brief overview of the current landscape around human rights law and policy and rights-based service delivery;
  • Organize and co-facilitate a global convening to consult with key stakeholders and international experts, probably to be held in South America;
  • Organize and co-facilitate online consultations with these key stakeholders/experts;
  • Develop working draft of Standards and Implementation Tool, incorporating expert feedback from global convening; and
  • Supervise Project Coordinator and legal interns.

Qualifications:

  • A law degree.
  • At least two years of international human rights legal experience, including experience working with U.N. human rights mechanisms. Experience with women’s rights and/or disability rights, especially in the areas of sexual and reproductive health and gender-based violence strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing toolkits, manuals, or similar publications using key stakeholder and expert participatory consultation processes.
  • Outstanding legal writing and research skills.
  • Capable of complex legal and policy analysis.
  • Demonstrated commitment to women’s rights and/or disability rights.
  • Fluency in English is required. Familiarity with other U.N. languages, especially Spanish, is a plus.
  • Must have authorization to work in the U.S.

About Women Enabled International:

WEI works at the intersection of women’s rights and disability rights and advocates and educates for the rights of all women and girls and all persons with disabilities, with a focus on women and girls with disabilities, in collaboration with women’s rights organizations and women with disabilities rights organizations worldwide. Through such collaborations, WEI fosters cross-movement cooperation to bolster understanding, cross-cutting and intersectional advocacy, and the advancement of the rights of all women and girls.  Areas of focus include gender-based and sexual violence, sexual and reproductive health and rights, access to justice, conflict and post-conflict situations, and caregivers and caregiving, among other issues.

Compensation: 

$25,000 for the duration of the consulting contract (12 months, based on a 20-hour work week).

Internship positions at Human Rights Now (HRN) are unpaid but do not require any previous experience working for a human rights organization. Those who have strong legal backgrounds or competences which would meet our standard are highly encouraged to apply. Please see below for more information.

Tasks will include but are not strictly limited to: Attending meetings at the Human Rights Council and other relevant organizations; preparing talking points, reporting to the Tokyo office, contributing to lobbying efforts, drafting statements and assisting in their distribution. Other tasks include translation, research, data collection, responding to the media, and network building with other NGOs.

  • This is an unpaid internship and there will be no funds available to cover intern’s expenses including transportation fees.
  • Must be available to work at least 2 days per week from 10am to 5pm (If available for more than 18 hours per week, please let us know).
  • Must be available to work for a minimum period of 6 months.
  • *We also accept interns for less than 6 months as long as they are strongly committed to the required tasks. Especially we are looking for interns who can attend Human Rights Council sessions, monitor them, report to the Tokyo office, and provide oral interventions.
  • *Please note that unfortunately HRN cannot assist interns in obtaining visas.

Qualifications

  • Basic understanding of law, international human rights law, and the UN system.
  • Proficiency in English, oral communication skills are especially important (a minimum score of 90 on TOEFL iBT exam)
  • Ability to discuss relevant topics using technical and specialist terms in English.

insightcollborative2Job Description : Insight Collaborative, a non-profit organization focusing on conflict resolution, is taking applications for its 2017 – 2018 Insight Fellowship Program.  Developed to foster a community of global-minded individuals prepared to contribute more effectively to their local, national, and international communities, the Program awards one-year Fellowships to exceptional individuals to:

  • Study and promote effective conflict management
  • Make international humanitarian contributions
  • Pursue self-reflection and personal development

The fellowship includes a $25k expense allowance to support multiple placements totaling one year, typically in 3-4 month blocks. Each fellow is required to repay the amount of the $25k allowance used through individual fundraising efforts, regenerating the funds to ensure support for th next fellow. This “pay forward” approach instills the values of sustainability and non-profit entrepreneurship. This first three months take place at the Boston office of the Insight Collaborative, where fellows advance their understanding of the theory and practice of effective negotiation, communication and mediation. The remaining nine months of the fellowship are divided into foreign placements proposed by the fellow.

Intern duties include: Familiarizing him or herself with the law of expungement, custody, restraining orders, victim advocacy and public benefits in DC, Maryland and Virginia. All training materials will be given to the intern and the intern will receive intensive training on the areas of the law and the civil law process from Amara’s Director of Legal Services. After training, assisting Amara staff attorneys and pro-bono attorneys in general legal research for expungement of records cases, civil cases, criminal defense cases, and victim-witness advocacy. Central America is being hit with an epidemic of Chronic Kidney Disease of nontraditional causes (CKDnT). The population most acutely affected by the epidemic are the sugarcane cutters working in the lowlands of Western Nicaragua. Recent research shows that there is a strong relationship between the sickness and work conditions. Research also shows that many of the same work conditions linked to CKDnT are also in violation of domestic and international laws protecting worker health and safety. For this reason, Profesionales para la Auditoría Social y Empresarial (PASE) has opened a Legal Services Office in Chinandega, Nicaragua focused on serving sugarcane workers, ex-sugarcane workers and their families. The PASE Legal Services Office grew out of a collaboration with La Isla Foundation (LIF), a non-profit organization aimed at tackling CKDnT.

program for entry-level attorneys, and is the only way DOJ hires law students directly out of law
school. Judicial law clerks, full-time graduate law program (LLM) students, and law school
graduates in qualifying full-time legal fellowships are also eligible. The first opportunity for law
students to apply for the Honors Program is the summer before their third year of law school.
For the 2015-2016 Attorney General’s Honors Program, the on-line centralized electronic

Alaska Supreme Court Clerkship for Fall 2016, Due 9/11

The Alaska Court System is accepting applications for Fall 2016 for the Alaska Supreme Court and Court of Appeals. The Supreme Court is the appellate court of final authority in Alaska. There are five Supreme Court Justices. Four  justices are located in Anchorage, one justice is in Fairbanks. The Court of Appeals hears appeals in criminal and quasi -criminal cases (such as juvenile delinquency cases). There are three appellate judges, all located in Anchorage. Judicial clerks conduct legal research and prepare memoranda of law for judges or justices. Positions commence mid-August to early September 2016.

Justice Craig Stowers will be conducting interviews for the whole Court at UW Law on Thursday, October 1, 2015. (Justice Stowers will become Chief Justice in July.)

To apply for positions in the Supreme Court and be considered for an interview with Chief Justice Stowers on October 1, applicants must submit the following: a cover letter, resume, a copy of all law school transcripts, and a brief writing sample which was not substantially edited by someone else. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities is a nationally recognized non-profit that conducts research on budget, tax, and other issues and promotes policies to improve the lives of low- and moderate-income people.  We are seeking a Research Assistant or Associate (RA) – title commensurate with experience – to work with a team of highly skilled national policy analysts on a range of current federal budget, tax, and low-income policy issues.

Interns contribute substantively to the Center’s work in one or more of program areas. In particular, interns carry out research that analyzes trends in global policy. They also contribute to the Center’s research documenting deprivations of economic and social rights in specific country contexts; this interdisciplinary research deploys social science and statistical methods alongside traditional techniques of human rights reporting, such as legal analysis and narrative testimony. Interns are also involved in preparing reports and other advocacy materials based on the findings of such research, to present to relevant institutions at the national, regional and United Nations level. As a small NGO, the Center has established robust partnerships with national, regional and international organizations that allow for mutual exchange of expertise. Interns may also interact with our partners, including by attending meetings and workshops, preparing or delivering presentations, authoring blogs posts and opinion pieces, etc.

The Legal Department of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (“AFL‑CIO”) is offering a one‑year fellowship beginning in September 2015.  The fellowship offers an excellent opportunity for recent law school graduates to work with experienced union-side lawyers on a wide variety of issues.

The AFL‑CIO Fellow will work with lawyers in the AFL‑CIO Legal Department and with other union lawyers around the country on a wide range of activities.  The Fellow will assist experienced lawyers working on cases and regulatory matters that affect the labor movement and the rights of workers.  The AFL‑CIO’s litigation caseload includes cases in the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Courts of Appeals, the NLRB and a small number of state appellate suits.  In addition, the AFL‑CIO Legal Department frequently presents the views of the labor movement on federal regulatory initiatives affecting workers.  Whenever possible, the Fellow will be given the opportunity to participate in meetings with union lawyers and to attend oral arguments.  The AFL‑CIO Fellow will also participate in Lawyers Coordinating Committee activities, including preparation for attorney conferences, outreach to new labor lawyers and law students, and regular opportunities to attend LCC meetings and conferences.

The Snohomish County Public Defenders Association is seeking 2L Summer interns for 2015 Rule 9 positions. The Snohomish County Public Defenders Association represents indigent individuals in the Superior and District Courts of Snohomish County. Currently the office has a Felony unit, Misdemeanor unit, Civil Commitment unit, and a Predator unit. The positions will be in the Misdemeanor unit at the office. Each intern will be paired up with a supervising attorney who will assign tasks as needed.

After an initial training period, which will last approximately two weeks, the position will require frequent court appearances, meeting with clients, possible interviews at various correctional facilitates, motions practice, and any other task assigned by a supervising attorney. The position will likely require a significant amount of time in court. Only those interested in working with indigent people and who are interested in trial work should apply. Positions are unpaid. Externship credit is possible but will require the student to coordinate with the school. The ideal start time would be shortly after the school year ends and go to just before the next school session. There can be some flexibility as to start and end dates.

Washington State Pro Bono Council Offering 2014-2015 Access to Justice Policy Internship, Open Until Filled

Volunteer lawyer programs (VLPs) in Washington State have a unique and complex history. Each of the 18 current VLPs evolved in its own way. Several VLPs started as projects of local bar associations, while others were started by groups of attorneys responding to the need in their community. Some programs became stand-alone nonprofit corporations, others became part of community action centers, and three programs remain part of their local bar associations. The local nature of the VLPs is both a challenge and strength.

In response to these realities, the Pro Bono Subcommittee of the Access to Justice Board’s Delivery Systems Committee proposed that a Statewide Pro Bono Council (PBC) be formed to unify and address the needs of Washington’s VLPs – the proposal was adopted in July 2013 and launched in January 2014. The PBC is situated as a committee of the Access to Justice Board.  The PBC welcomes the participation of a law student as an ATJ intern.

The student will be invited to attend PBC meetings, shadow VLP clinics and projects, and be able to work on discrete projects related to the effective delivery of pro bono services in Washington, including one major research project. The nature and scope of these projects will be determined by the PBC, the Manager, and the student as the relationship develops. The research project will involve investigation and analysis of the systemic delivery of legal aid across the state.

Washington Supreme Court Seeking Externs in Winter, Spring, and Summer Quarters – Work with Justice Gonzalez

Justice González is an associate justice of the Washington State Supreme Court, the highest state appellate court.  His externs work under the close supervision of his lead law clerk, Laura Anglin. Externs will review and draft memoranda to the court analyzing and recommending the proper disposition of motions and state habeas corpus (personal restraint) petitions. They will review and make recommendations on bench memos, opinions, and attorney discipline matters. They may assist in the preparation of speeches, CLE materials, rules, and opinions. Externs must be able to both work independently, and work closely with a team, and learn from vigorous copy editing. Considerable research and writing is required.

Southern Poverty Law Center Seeking Staff Attorney for Economic Justice Project in Montgomery, Alabama

The Southern Poverty Law Center seeks an attorney to join the Economic Justice Project in its Montgomery, Alabama office. The Southern Poverty Law Center is dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry, and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of our society. Our Economic Justice Project seeks to address the systems, both public and private, that keep people trapped in poverty. Past and present areas of focus have been predatory payday and car title lending, the criminalization of poverty and related barriers the criminal justice system creates for persons to escape poverty, modern debtors’ prisons, access to public benefits and more. The practice group is based in Montgomery, Alabama but works across the Southeast United States. The practice group was formed in 2012, and is growing significantly to expand its work. The practice group is headed by a Deputy Legal Director who oversees this and another practice group, and has two full-time attorneys, one part-time attorney, and a researcher/advocate; the practice group is in the process of hiring a second researcher/advocate.
