Eastside Legal Assistance Program Seeking Family Law Intern, Due 12/22

The Eastside Legal Assistance Program (“ELAP”) is looking for a law student to intern in our Domestic Violence Legal Program (“DVLP”) for the Winter Quarter 2016.

ELAP is a non-profit organization that provides no-cost civil legal services to survivors of domestic violence, including related family law issues (such as custody, parenting plans, spousal support, etc.), throughout King County, Washington, and to low-income residents of East and Northeast King County.  The intern will work with staff attorneys in the representation of clients, including providing assistance to draft pleadings and to interview clients, as well as to research points of law.  By the conclusion of the internship, it is expected that the intern will craft a legal memorandum that can be used as a writing sample.

This position will provide experience in practical legal skills such as client interviewing, legal issue spotting, case development, and working with low-income clients.  In addition, the intern will learn substantive and procedural aspects to family law practice, with an emphasis on representing domestic violence survivors. This position is unpaid but can be sponsored for academic credit if available through the student’s school.

L.C., 527 U.S. 581 (1999). NWIRP’s Seattle Office services low-income immigrants and refugees in Western Washington. The office provides direct legal representation, referrals to pro bono attorneys, pro se assistance, and workshops on immigration matters ranging from asylum, citizenship, family petitions, and protections for immigrant children and victims of crimes.

The internship is open to first, second, and third year law students. Applicants should have excellent written and oral communication skills, an interest in immigration law, an ability to work in a diverse and fast-paced work environment, and a commitment to advancing and defending the legal rights of low-income immigrants and refugees. Applicants proficient in Spanish are strongly preferred. The internship is unpaid, but NWIRP will work with applicants to secure outside funding or academic credit.

The Center for Reproductive Rights (the Center) is the premier global legal organization dedicated to advancing women’s reproductive health, self-determination, and dignity. The Center’s U.S. Policy and Advocacy (USPA) department is looking for an enthusiastic, resourceful and highly organized law student intern with a commitment to reproductive rights issues to engage in a variety of projects related to federal policy analysis and nonprofit advocacy. This internship will provide the successful candidate with experience in the day-to day operations of a dynamic in-house federal policy team, including legislative analysis and drafting, coalition advocacy, and translating legal and legislative language into persuasive policy documents.

The internship is part-time, and will begin in September 2015 and end in November 2015. Exact schedule is flexible according to the student’s academic schedule, but preference will be given to candidates that are available for a minimum of 15 hours/week spread over multiple days. The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, one of the nation’s foremost civil right legal organizations, annually sponsors a one-year fellowship under the George N. Lindsay Civil Rights Fellowship Program. The Lindsay Fellowship provides an opportunity for recent law school graduates to become familiar with civil rights practice by working with many of the nation’s leading civil rights experts at the national office of the Lawyers’ Committee in Washington, D.C. Our fellows become involved with substantive legal activities, which involve co-counseled litigation with prominent law firms, including client contact, case investigation, discovery, negotiations, amicus briefs, appeals, and trial practice.
