Holistic Legal practice combines aggressive legal advocacy with a broader recognition that for most poor people arrested and charged with a crime, or facing a civil legal aid issue, the presenting case, whether civil or criminal, is not the only issue with which they struggle. The key insight of holistic legal practice is that to be truly effective advocates for our clients, we must broaden the scope of our work to include the consequences of criminal justice involvement as well as the underlying issues, both legal and non-legal, that have played a part in driving our clients into legal problems in the first place. Read more here.

USHRNUSHRN’s bi-annual human rights conference is the primary national gathering for human rights and social justice activists, advocates, practitioners, and supporters dedicated to strengthening a human rights agenda and culture in the U.S. and demanding the United States government fulfill its human rights obligations in the U.S.  This will be their 5th bi-annual conference as they celebrate their 10th Anniversary! This year’s theme: Dignity. Justice. Action.

The conference agenda will allow participants to learn from presentations and discussions on four thematic tracks: 1) comprehensive immigration policy and enforcement; 2) the criminal system and mass incarceration; 3) economic policy and workers rights; and 4) climate justice.  Framing papers will be released prior to the conference to inform discussions on each track. Space will be provided for presentations and interactive workshops on these and other human rights issues.  Participants will leave with a deeper understanding on the gender, race and class impact on fulfillment of rights, and the inter-connectedness of rights.
