The North Carolina Justice Center, a progressive policy advocacy organization whose mission is to expand opportunity and protect the rights of poor and working individuals and families in North Carolina, is seeking a staff attorney for immigration law and immigration policy issues in North Carolina.
The Staff Attorney is responsible for providing direct legal assistance to low income immigrants seeking legal status. The Staff Attorney will maintain a caseload of immigration matters including asylum, cancellation of removal, NACARA, VAWA; U and T visas, and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. He/she will also serve as a resource on immigration law and policy to other immigration attorneys and advocates.
The position will report directly to the Director of the Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project and will also receive guidance from the Justice Center’s Litigation Director. The attorney will work closely with the Immigrant and Refugee Rights team and the Justice Center’s litigation staff.
Candidates should have at least 3 to 5 years of relevant experience in immigration law. Prior experience in civil litigation is also a plus. The position requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to work independently, ability to work collaboratively, ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure, plus excellent writing, legal research, and oral advocacy skills. Spanish language fluency strongly preferred. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to social justice, the ability to recognize the barriers facing immigrant communities, and experience working with low-income individuals.
