Bill Drafting Attorney Position Available in Olympia

The Office of the Code Reviser in Olympia is hiring an entry-level staff attorney to draft bills for the Washington State Legislature during the upcoming legislative session in Olympia (November 1, 2012—March 31, 2013). Candidates must be licensed to practice law in the state of Washington.

The Office of the Code Reviser is the central bill drafting agency of the Washington State Legislature. Staff attorneys provide expert bill drafting services for legislators, Senate and House of Representatives committee and caucus staff, and state agencies. In addition to the provision of bill drafting services, the office also maintains, revises, harmonizes, and corrects the databases containing the official versions of the Revised Code of Washington and the Washington Administrative Code. The office employs approximately forty employees and is located on the beautiful Washington State Capitol Campus. This is a nonpartisan position, exempt from civil service.

The successful candidate must: Work weekends and extended hours during the workweek for the duration of the legislative session; interact in a positive and productive manner with coworkers; have excellent written and oral communication skills; be able to manage, prioritize, and complete multiple drafting projects under the time constraints of a fast-paced legislative environment; be able to expeditiously and accurately evaluate large amounts of information, including existing laws, rules, and court cases, for the effective preparation of legislation; and have a strong desire to become proficient in the technical aspects of bill drafting and the legislative process. The salary is $4,406 per month.
