Legal Aid Services of Oregon (LASO) seeks a full-time staff attorney for the Woodburn, OR, office of its Farmworker Program. The Farmworker Program represents migrant and seasonal farm, nursery and forestry workers primarily in employment, housing and civil rights cases. Application due August 31, 2012.
BACKGROUND: LASO is a non-profit organization that represents low-income clients in civil cases. LASO has nine regional offices that serve the general low-income population and two specialized statewide programs that provide services to farmworkers and representation on Native American issues. LASO is an effective, high-quality legal services program that is committed to advocacy strategies having the broadest possible impact on client community problems.
The Farmworker Program consists of a director, four attorneys (including a supervising attorney), two paralegals and an office manager located in three different offices. The majority of our farmworker clients are Spanish-speaking immigrants. They experience a wide variety of legal problems, including unpaid wages, poor working conditions, unsafe housing, discrimination and retaliation for the exercise of their legal rights.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The staff attorney will represent farmworkers in federal and state courts and before administrative agencies. The case load consists primarily of employment, housing, civil rights, unemployment and tax cases. The staff attorney will also be involved in community education and outreach to migrant labor camps and community-based groups, which may include occasional overnight travel.
QUALIFICATIONS: We seek applicants who have a commitment to justice for farmworkers; 0–5 years of legal experience; excellent legal skills; ability to speak, read and write Spanish; and membership in the Oregon bar or a willingness to take the next bar exam.
SALARY/BENEFITS: Based on experience. Full benefits package including health insurance, 401(k) plan, vacation leave and law school loan repayment program.
